About the Wikipedia 25 visual identity

[edit]

This year, Wikipedia is turning 25, and we want to celebrate 25 years of knowledge, humanity and collaboration at its best. As Wikipedia’s puzzle globe represents, together and piece by piece, we build the sum of all human knowledge.

The Wikipedia 25 visual identity system is rooted in Wikipedia’s puzzle piece, a core part of Wikipedia’s globe logo since 2003. It is a shape that is universally understood and can be interpreted in many different ways; a single puzzle piece represents the connections that we build between one another as individuals. The pieces put together represent a whole that is worth more than the sum of its parts.

Our foundational element: The Puzzle Piece

The individual puzzle piece is an adaptation of the piece from Wikipedia’s globe. It is made simpler for legibility, ease of understanding, and for use within a broader system. This simpler shape allows the puzzle piece to be used within a grid structure, as a photo mask, or as a building block for icons and imagery.

The Wikipedia 25 logo and how to use it

[edit]

The primary 25th anniversary lockup consists of the standard Wikipedia wordmark combined with our updated puzzle piece and a stylized 25 within it. This mark is the most recognisable, and helps to build brand awareness for Wikipedia. This mark is especially effective in contexts where it might not be clear that it is Wikipedia “speaking”, for example when posting from an affiliate’s social media account.

The use of the WP25 logo is governed by the Wikimedia Foundation Trademark Policy.

The shortened version of the logo consists solely of the W from the wordmark combined with the ‘25’ puzzle piece.

It is intended to be used in spaces where it is already clear that the message is coming from or is about Wikipedia. So in spaces where there are other overt mentions of Wikipedia. This mark works well, for example, on a flyer if Wikipedia is already mentioned in the headline. Similarly, it could work well on a post on Wikipedia’s social media channels or a central notice banner.

Logo for dark backgrounds

A white version of the logo can be used for dark backgrounds and photography.

Buffer spaces

We should always have some buffer space around the logo. The amount of space to keep open, depends on the size of the logo. The minimum "safe" space to keep open should be equal to the width of the puzzle “tab” or “notch” – the technical names for the part of a jigsaw puzzle piece used to connect them.

Puzzle piece terminology

When we talk about our puzzle piece, the negative space is known as the “blank” and the extruding space is known as the “notch”.

[edit]

Localize the mark for your language

Build your own version of the primary 25th anniversary lockup by combining the Wikipedia wordmark in your language with the 25 puzzle piece brand mark.

For languages that are read from right to left, you can move the 25 puzzle piece brand mark to the end of the Wikipedia wordmark so that it is read last. But, do not change the 25 puzzle piece orientation.

Please do not change the shorter mark with the W-icon and 25 puzzle piece. To build brand recognition, we are keeping this consistent across all languages.

Using the Wikipedia 25 logo on Wikipedia

[edit]

Wikipedians often decide to change the logo on Wikipedia for birthday celebrations. This version with a brand line included is ideal for this use case.

Please note that with this Wikipedia 25 version, it is unnecessary and inadvisable to include the Wikipedia puzzle globe.

Please also do not make further adjustments like changing the colour or size of the puzzle piece so that it follows a similar size and placement as the original puzzle globe logo on the platform.

Only use this logo from December 2025 until the end of 2026.

Color palette

[edit]

Primary colors

The white, black and blue are highly recognisable parts of Wikipedia as a platform and the hypertext internet of links and type. We chose these colours to celebrate and strengthen their connection with the Wikipedia brand. With the addition of a brighter blue for greater contrast, these colors serve as the primary color palette.

These colours offer tonal flexibility in a campaign that spans more than a year and a range of topics from celebratory to more serious.

Color pairing

Prioritizing the signature Wikipedia blue by selecting colors that compliment it.

When working with the secondary palette we either pair it with the darker/lighter tones of the same color or with the Wikipedia signature dark blue.

To ensure your message is easy to read, use white text over the Wikipedia blue, and black text on all of the other colors.

Wikipedia 25 font

[edit]

Linux Libertine Regular is the primary font for headlines. Montserrat Regular used for body copy. Attribution is always in Montserrat Regular.

Both these fonts use the SIL Open Font License, so you can freely use and adapt the content. Montserrat is a Wikimedia brand font, and Linux Libertine is the font used in the Wikipedia logo mark.

Fonts for non-Latin languages

Following the same guidance as above, use the font from the official Wikipedia logo in your language as the primary font. Use Noto for body copy.

Designing with the puzzle pieces

[edit]

Individually

You can do almost anything with one puzzle piece. You can rotate it. You can add text, a photograph, add an icon from the design system inside of it or use it as a shape.

We can zoom into the puzzle piece, but if we do, it should be visible as a puzzle piece. We should always ensure at least one notch and one blank are visible.

Using the puzzle piece to create a pattern

You can also use the puzzle pieces as part of an interlocking grid structure. It is important to not change the grid pattern: Do not overlay puzzle pieces; change the sizes of individual puzzle pieces within the same grid; or rotate the puzzle pieces within a grid.

Aspect ratios when creating patterns for social

These are common aspect ratios and the suggested minimum puzzle piece sizes when using them as a grid in your composition.

Layouts & formats: Designing for social

[edit]

Layout suggestions for social posts

Here are layouts samples, with suggested image and text placement. You can download these layouts in a Google Slide format or PDF format to easily add your own photography and text and change colors.

Adding photography to your layouts

Here are layouts samples, with suggested image and text placement. When placing the image, be conscious of what is covered or revealed by the pieces. Use this to tell a story and focus attention on your message. In this example, always having the person’s eyes unobstructed shows respect and makes the composition more emotionally engaging.

You can use more than one photo within a single layout. This works best when they tell a story together, so they should be contextually relevant to one another and preferably be similar in terms of color.

Photography

[edit]

Photography selection

There is a wide variety of imagery that can be found on Wikimedia Commons, from beautiful landscapes, to iconic images from history. When choosing pictures for your layouts, there are a few things to take into account:

  • Complex or busy images will not work well with the puzzle pattern. Rather choose simpler compositions with open space and flatter colours.
  • If cultural or religious symbols are depicted, it should be done in a respectful way. Make sure the context you use the image in is also respectful.
  • Avoid images that can be interpreted as overtly political or partisan, culturally insensitive or disrespectful to the people present in the photo.
  • Images should avoid depictions of other brands.
  • Images should be suitable for all ages.

Adding attribution to your photographs

Make sure you have the rights to use the chosen photo. Giving credit to the creator of an image is really important in the free knowledge movement’s values, so be sure to credit the photographer or creator. Reasonable attribution is a cornerstone of the Creative Commons licences. These flexible licences are designed to make it easy to share and remix creative output. They require that you include the Title, Author, Source and License. Follow this handy attribution guide on how to do that.

The icons

[edit]

We are celebrating our 25th anniversary with a wide range of symbols.

The icons can be used in presentations, swag, social posts, and more. You can showcase many together, or display just one at a time. Here are some examples of how you can use them:

GIFs

Communicate and celebrate using these GIFs.

Create your own icon

[edit]

Making your own Wikipedia 25 birthday icon

  1. Create a vector drawing or find one on Noun Project (remember to include attribution!)
  2. Download our Puzzle Brush and import it into Adobe Photoshop
  3. Use the brush to trace over the vector drawing
  4. Perform a final clean up to fill in any missing gaps

Animation

[edit]

Check out our super cool puzzle tool With this tool you can turn any illustration or GIF into a puzzle piece animation! Start exploring by simply uploading an image/video clip/ gif of choice. You can create your puzzle visual by using our various settings to get the type of puzzle image you want.

We recommend for best results the less busy the image the better, and images with more contrast in colors work best as well.

Move the levers on the right-side table to play with image size, puzzle size, the spacing between the pieces themselves and of course the colours.

Please upload your freely licensed creations to Commons and add them to the Wikipedia 25 Puzzle tool icons category. Have fun!

Design your own Wikipedia 25 banner

[edit]

We’re inviting community members to help design a special birthday banner by including their own photo alongside the Wikipedia's 25th anniversary puzzle piece brand mark. Once you’ve created your design, please upload it to Wikimedia Commons so it can be celebrated by everyone.

This Google Slides deck provides you with a template and instructions for creating your own banner. The template is designed to be modular, meaning that banners can be combined with one another to make larger collages.

[edit]

Printing

In order to ensure that the size and quality of banners remains consistent, they should each be printed at a size of 100cm x 100cm on semigloss paper.

Selecting imagery

There is a wide variety of imagery that can be found on Wikimedia Commons, from beautiful landscapes, to iconic images from history. When choosing pictures for your layouts, there are however a few things we suggest you take into account:

  • Double check that images are public domain or that the licenses are CC BY, CC BY-SA or CC BY-NC.
  • Make sure that image is attributable to a specific person or user.
  • Images should not consist of complex or busy patterns that interfere with the puzzle pattern.
  • We prefer you refrain from using significant historical figures.
  • If cultural or religious symbols are depicted, they should be done so respectfully and contextually.
  • Avoid images that can be interpreted as overtly political or partisan, culturally insensitive or disrespectful to the people present in the photo.
  • Images should avoid depictions of other brands.
  • Images should be suitable for all ages.

Color selection

Ensure that any icons/logos used maintain an appropriate color contrast from your selected background color

Using the designs for other materials

[edit]

The Wikipedia 25 icons can be used to produce celebratory merchandise, identify special web pages or other digital content, make posters or banners, name tags, birthday cakes, and much more. Please do not use the name "Wikipedia" to sell any items, or for other uses without checking the trademark policy.

Two collections were developed to celebrate this milestone: The first one is a “Classics Collection”, inspired by Wikipedia’s beloved look, its hyperlinks, infoboxes, etc. That collection is already available and features t-shirts, hats, pennants, socks, and more. The second collection is launching on Wikipedia’s birthday, 15 January 2026, and is inspired by this birthday’s theme: 25 years of humanity at its best. It features really fun items, from pillows to hats. Check out the Wikipedia Store on 15 January 2026 to place your order.

Need help with the celebration toolkit?

[edit]

We encourage everyone to explore, experiment, and have fun when applying the design toolkit. When we use the toolkit well, we create a globally visible campaign that connects the different parts of the movement through Wikipedia’s 25th birthday. Let’s celebrate the people who have made Wikipedia possible over the last 25 years and invite more people into the movement!

If you have any questions about using the toolkit, please contact the Brand Studio team at wp25design(_AT_)wikimedia.org. The Brand Studio is a very small team handling a number of projects, so while we may not be able to offer design execution help, we will try to clarify any confusions and offer suggestions within three business days. This inbox will remain active during this year of celebration until December 2026.

The Brand Studio is also offering office hours to answer any questions you may have about the toolkit:

Future dates will be added in the new year.

There will also be a Let’s Connect session in January, 2026, where the Brand Studio team will present the design system leading to a discussion. Details for Let’s Connect will follow.
