Wikipedia 25/Celebration toolkit/Social Media
Help amplify Wikipedia’s birthday celebrations by sharing with your network! We want the world to celebrate with us, and together we can make that happen. Below are some simple ways to share the message.
Official hashtag
#Wikipedia25. Please use it on all your posts.
Share existing posts
Like and share the official Wikipedia posts about the birthday. There are multiple ways to celebrate:
Docuseries
Eight editors share their Wikipedia stories, showcasing how their purpose and passion for free knowledge have shaped the encyclopedia over the last 25 years. All episodes are now available on YouTube, Wikimedia Commons, and will soon come to Wikipedia's social media channels.
Longest birthday card
Let’s create the longest digital birthday card ever! Use the “Add Yours” sticker on Instagram and add your birthday wish to the growing chorus of contributors.
- Go to @Wikipedia
- Click the Story highlight in our profile
- Tap on the “Add Yours” sticker
- Record a video, add a photo, or write a note about your wish for Wikipedia’s future.
Diverse ideas and well-wishes that will encourage interest in Wikipedia and the free knowledge community are welcome. Be authentic, human, celebratory, kind. You should have fun!
Remember: It doesn't have to look perfect. Avoid saying (negative) expletives or lean into political topics – it’s a party!
Finally... Don’t forget to tag @Wikipedia and use the celebration hashtag, #Wikipedia25
Want to also participate on Meta-Wiki? There's a version of the card to sign over on Meta-wiki, too!
Virtual party
It’s time to party! We’re calling the bold editors, talk page philosophers, typo hunters, and edit warriors who’ve been shaping the sum of all human knowledge for a quarter century to join in the celebration. Here’s to making the internet just a little bit better, one edit at a time.
The party will be live-streamed on the Wikimedia Foundation website and on Wikipedia's YouTube and Instagram channels. If you miss it, don't worry: The videos will be saved so you can watch later.
Profile picture
Are you proud to be a Wikipedia editor? Have you ever donated to the free encyclopedia? Your contribution is essential to sustaining free, verified information!
To help you demonstrate this support for human knowledge, change your profile picture on your social media channels using the customizable profile picture frame for editors and donors. Download it now on Wikimedia Commons.
My first edit
What was the first Wikipedia article you edited? How did your curiosity go from a ONE to a TEN and turn you into a steward of knowledge?
“My first edit” is an invitation to share the first article you ever edited and why it mattered to your journey to become an editor. It starts with a simple prompt: Every editor starts somewhere!
Download this editable post template (Google Slides) for social media, insert a picture of yourself (or a screenshot of your first edit!), and post it on your channels. Don't forget to use #Wikipedia25!
25 Years of Wikipedia time capsule
Perfect time to delve into the past, present, and future of this treasured global resource.
The “25 Years of Wikipedia” time capsule features Jimmy Wales sharing, in his own words, memories from Wikipedia's origin story, including when he himself installed the site's very first servers. The capsule also explores Wikipedia's role during major global events, such as when Wikipedia's servers almost collapsed in 2009 from site visits following Michael Jackson's death. It also deep dives into some of the most weird and wonderful parts of Wikipedia, like an article on a prescient octopus named Paul.
Interactive quiz
Which Wikipedia future best represents you? This interactive quiz depicts futures imagined by a group of Wikipedia editors, young children, professional futurists, and artists, representing a range of visions for the Wikipedia of tomorrow.
