Color pairing
Prioritizing the signature Wikipedia blue by selecting colors that complement it.
When working with the secondary palette we either pair it with the darker/lighter tones of the same color or with the Wikipedia signature dark blue.
To ensure your message is easy to read, use white text over the Wikipedia blue, and black text on all of the other colors.
L'attribuzione è sempre in Montserrat Regular.
Both these fonts use the SIL Open Font License, so you can freely use and adapt the content. Montserrat is a Wikimedia brand font, and Linux Libertine is the font used in the Wikipedia logo mark.
Fonts for non-Latin languages
Following the same guidance as above, use the font from the official Wikipedia logo in your language as the primary font. Use Noto for body copy.

Designing with the puzzle pieces
Individually
You can do almost anything with one puzzle piece. You can rotate it. You can add text, a photograph, add an icon from the design system inside of it or use it as a shape.
We can zoom into the puzzle piece, but if we do, it should be visible as a puzzle piece. We should always ensure at least one notch and one blank are visible.
You can also use the puzzle pieces as part of an interlocking grid structure. It is important to not change the grid pattern: Do not overlay puzzle pieces; change the sizes of individual puzzle pieces within the same grid; or rotate the puzzle pieces within a grid.
Aspect ratios when creating patterns for social
These are common aspect ratios and the suggested minimum puzzle piece sizes when using them as a grid in your composition.

Layout suggestions for social posts
Here are layouts samples, with suggested image and text placement. You can download these layouts in a Google Slide format or PDF format to easily add your own photography and text and change colors.
Adding photography to your layouts
Here are layouts samples, with suggested image and text placement. When placing the image, be conscious of what is covered or revealed by the pieces. Use this to tell a story and focus attention on your message. In this example, always having the person’s eyes unobstructed shows respect and makes the composition more emotionally engaging.
You can use more than one photo within a single layout. This works best when they tell a story together, so they should be contextually relevant to one another and preferably be similar in terms of color.
Photography
Photography selection
There is a wide variety of imagery that can be found on Wikimedia Commons, from beautiful landscapes, to iconic images from history. When choosing pictures for your layouts, there are a few things to take into account:
- Complex or busy images will not work well with the puzzle pattern. Rather choose simpler compositions with open space and flatter colours.
- If cultural or religious symbols are depicted, it should be done in a respectful way. Make sure the context you use the image in is also respectful.
- Avoid images that can be interpreted as overtly political or partisan, culturally insensitive or disrespectful to the people present in the photo.
- Images should avoid depictions of other brands.
- Images should be suitable for all ages.
Adding attribution to your photographs
Make sure you have the rights to use the chosen photo. Giving credit to the creator of an image is really important in the free knowledge movement’s values, so be sure to credit the photographer or creator. Reasonable attribution is a cornerstone of the Creative Commons licences. These flexible licences are designed to make it easy to share and remix creative output. They require that you include the Title, Author, Source and License. Follow this handy attribution guide on how to do that.
The icons
We are celebrating our 25th anniversary with a wide range of symbols.
The icons can be used in presentations, swag, social posts, and more. You can showcase many together, or display just one at a time. Here are some examples of how you can use them:
GIFs
Communicate and celebrate using these GIFs.
Create your own icon
Making your own Wikipedia 25 birthday icon
- Create a vector drawing or find one on Noun Project (remember to include attribution!)
- Download our Puzzle Brush and import it into Adobe Photoshop
- Use the brush to trace over the vector drawing
- Perform a final clean up to fill in any missing gaps
Animation
Check out our super cool puzzle tool
With this tool you can turn any illustration or GIF into a puzzle piece animation! Start exploring by simply uploading an image/video clip/ gif of choice. You can create your puzzle visual by using our various settings to get the type of puzzle image you want.
We recommend for best results the less busy the image the better, and images with more contrast in colors work best as well.
Move the levers on the right-side table to play with image size, puzzle size, the spacing between the pieces themselves and of course the colours.
Please upload your freely licensed creations to Commons and add them to the Wikipedia 25 Puzzle tool icons category. Have fun!

Design your own Wikipedia 25 banner
We’re inviting community members to help design a special birthday banner by including their own photo alongside the Wikipedia's 25th anniversary puzzle piece brand mark. Once you’ve created your design, please upload it to Wikimedia Commons so it can be celebrated by everyone.
This Google Slides deck provides you with a template and instructions for creating your own banner. The template is designed to be modular, meaning that banners can be combined with one another to make larger collages.
Banner guidelines
Printing
In order to ensure that the size and quality of banners remains consistent, they should each be printed at a size of 100cm x 100cm on semigloss paper.
Selecting imagery
There is a wide variety of imagery that can be found on Wikimedia Commons, from beautiful landscapes, to iconic images from history. When choosing pictures for your layouts, there are however a few things we suggest you take into account:
- Double check that images are public domain or that the licenses are CC BY, CC BY-SA or CC BY-NC.
- Make sure that image is attributable to a specific person or user.
- Images should not consist of complex or busy patterns that interfere with the puzzle pattern.
- We prefer you refrain from using significant historical figures.
- If cultural or religious symbols are depicted, they should be done so respectfully and contextually.
- Avoid images that can be interpreted as overtly political or partisan, culturally insensitive or disrespectful to the people present in the photo.
- Images should avoid depictions of other brands.
- Images should be suitable for all ages.
Color selection
Ensure that any icons/logos used maintain an appropriate color contrast from your selected background color

Available merchandise and swag
Two collections were developed to celebrate this milestone: The first one is a “Classics Collection”, inspired by Wikipedia’s beloved look, its hyperlinks, infoboxes, etc. That collection is already available and features t-shirts, hats, pennants, socks, and more. The second collection is launching on Wikipedia’s birthday, 15 January 2026, and is inspired by this birthday’s theme: 25 years of humanity at its best. It features really fun items, from pillows to hats. Check out the Wikipedia Store on 15 January 2026 to place your order.

25 years of human knowledge video
25 years ago, Wikipedia was a dream. A wildly ambitious, probably impossible dream. This video was created to highlight the past 25 years of human knowledge, and the people who made it possible.
We have created different versions for you to share this video widely on social media, in blog posts, presentations, live events, etc.
More formats of this video are available on Wikimedia Commons (with burnt-in subtitles, without voiceover, shorter cutdowns, and vertical videos)

Need help with the celebration toolkit?
We encourage everyone to explore, experiment, and have fun when applying the design toolkit. When we use the toolkit well, we create a globally visible campaign that connects the different parts of the movement through Wikipedia’s 25th birthday. Let’s celebrate the people who have made Wikipedia possible over the last 25 years and invite more people into the movement!
If you have any questions about using the toolkit, please contact the Brand Studio team at wp25design
wikimedia.org. The Brand Studio is a very small team handling a number of projects, so while we may not be able to offer design execution help, we will try to clarify any confusions and offer suggestions within three business days. This inbox will remain active during this year of celebration until December 2026.
The Brand Studio is also offering office hours to answer any questions you may have about the toolkit:
- November 19, 2025, 18:00 UTC: Bex, Shrutika
- December 3, 2025, 10:00 UTC: Bex, Corli
- February 10, 2026, 18:00 UTC: Bex, Shrutika
- February 24, 2026, 10:00 UTC: Bex, Corli
Future dates will be added in the new year.
There will also be a Let’s Connect session in January, 2026, where the Brand Studio team will present the design system leading to a discussion. Details for Let’s Connect will follow.
