Introduction

[edit]

During this special edition of Wikipedia Asian Month, the National Archives Administration (NAA) of Taiwan and Wikimedia Taiwan (WMTW) invite you to explore and revisit a pivotal chapter in Taiwan’s modern history. NAA provided several archival photographs which document how Taiwan, from the 1950s to the 1970s, engaged with the world as a representative of "Free China." These rare diplomatic images reflect the symbolic tensions of the Cold War era.

You are invited to translate the image descriptions to your language, identify important figures depicted in the photos, that will provide historical context that enriches our understanding of each moment. You are also welcome to upload contemporary images or records of the same locations, allowing us to visually contrast the past with the present.

WMTW also hope that this event is an experiment, allowing Wikipedia Asia Month to take on more diverse forms in the future, and enabling the world to better understand Asia.
