Wikipedia was founded in 2001 as an online encyclopedia and has since grown to support more than 200 languages. There are millions of subjects you can read about on Wikipedia. Though the English Wikipedia is the largest one in absolute terms, most of Wikipedia's content is actually distributed across all different language editions. In the smaller editions of Wikipedia, there are only a handful of editors creating content for their Wikipedia edition. Despite being the largest and most populous continent (more than half of the world's population lives in Asia), Asian topics are on the Internet and on Wikipedia vastly underrepresented. Without being presented on the Internet, it is difficult for the rest of the world to become familiar with and learn about the rich culture and history of Asia. Wikipedia Asian Month can be seen as a cultural exchange across Wikipedia editions, exposing the editors to multiple perspectives across different nations and cultures.

Meanwhile, most Asian languages Wikipedia projects and communities are relatively minor compared to their large population base. 9 Wikipedia projects have more than 5,000 active users, yet only 2 of them are in Asian languages. Among 39 Wikimedia Chapters, only 7 of them are from Asia. Wikipedia Asian Month wishes to narrow these gaps. Support is essential for these communities to take more approaches to grow. To address this issue, Wikipedia Asian Month dedicates itself to supporting community development, promoting its participants to create content about Asian topics. For many Wikipedia projects, Wikipedia Asian Month is their only online event. By participating in the Asian Month, you are empowering the Wikipedia Asian Month team and making these supporters possible and available to the communities they support.

Unlike some other Wikipedia events, Wikipedia Asian Month does not pay most of its attention to outreach to new users or highlighting extraordinary active editors. Instead, we dedicate most of our effort to praising the core forces of the Wikipedia communities, who have consistently contributed to Wikipedia over a long period by writing numerous new articles each year or making a few hundred edits periodically. By giving out an appreciation to them, it makes them feel connected and appreciated in the Wikimedia movement. This, in turn, may lead editors to create more content for Wikipedia and stay longer to edit it in their language.

Objective

Along with the Wikipedia Asian Month itself, the Wikipedia Asian Month User Group has missions that include the following:

  • Improve Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects' content about Asia (related culture, content, and enjoyment):
Wikipedia content about Asia is underrepresented on most Wikipedia projects. In the past 3 years, more than 20 small Wikipedia communities have been involved in this event (fewer than 10,000 articles).
  • Supporting small Wikipedia communities around the world (majorly Asian Language Wikipedia) run Edit-a-thons that otherwise wouldn't occur:
To some of those Wikipedias, Wikipedia Asian Month is the first and only editing event. Wikipedia Asian Month also assist small / startup local communities, to encourage growth and development:
  • Continuously support and maintain the community health of Wikipedia:
We've reached and interacted with more than 500 very active Wikipedians (who can write 5 high-quality articles in one month) around the world (from more than 50 countries or regions). To many of these Wikipedians, our postcards, buttons, and certificates are the only souvenirs of their Wikipedian experience they have received over the years.
  • Increase the collaboration, communication and cooperation among the Wikimedia communities and affiliates:

Wikipedia Asian Month allows Wikipedians in the middle of the curve to receive cultural souvenirs from other Wikipedians around the world. The contest is a result of collaboration among all affiliates in the ESEAP region, and is supported by nearly 20 affiliates in many ways
