Preserving and Activating Free License Books and Manuscripts through Competitions and Training

Abstract/Description

[edit]

Since 2020 Wikimedia Indonesia have been actively supporting Wikisource communities in Indonesia through competitions and training. These activities invite Wikisource contributors to engage deeper into the myriads of books and literature, ranging from Indonesian books, Javanese, Balinese and Sundanese scripts to Malay-Arabic script that we just recently learned together with the communities via the newly launched project of Malay Wikisource.

Relationship to Wikisource and the Theme

[edit]

This presentation will explain how Wikisource competitions have been bringing a new life for the old manuscripts from various indigenous scripts in Indonesia. By doing the Wikisource training, we also invite new Wikisource users to learn more about their homegrown culture through literature. Hoping that the seed we once planted through these kinds of good practices will emerge in the near future and help to save the old manuscript through active engagement with the digital form of the manuscript itself. By doing these activities we also learn new skills such as re-writing the scripts digitally. Since, some of the participants mostly only read and write the script (such as Javanese, Malay-Arabic, etc) manually without a computer.
