Title of the submitted proposal:
Walking in Philippine Heritage Sites: Applying Multisensory Digital Mapping for Wikisource
Description:
This paper presents an innovative approach to heritage preservation through multisensory digital mapping, focusing on the Maligcong Rice Terraces in Bontoc, Mountain Province. This employs walk-based, multisensory ethnography to map pathways shaped by indigenous movement and interaction. Through this method, the paper highlights how walking as a research tool uncovers the intersections, detours, and connections within the landscape.
By integrating local narratives with the researcher’s experiential engagement, this digital mapping approach captures the sensory elements of place—sound, sight, touch, and smell—documenting the living interactions between humans, the environment, and non-human species. These multisensory maps, developed through "walking photography" and audio-visual recordings, offer a unique method for digitally preserving the complex interactions found in heritage sites like the Maligcong Rice Terraces.
Relationship to Wikisource or to the theme:
This presentation will discuss the potential of embedding multisensory digital maps into Wikisource to create interactive, community-driven archives that preserve not only visual records but also the sounds, smells, and embodied experiences of these culturally significant spaces. By augmenting traditional heritage documentation with sensory data, this project contributes to the transformation of digital heritage preservation, providing a richer and more immersive representation of cultural landscapes.
