Wikitrails
Overview[edit]
To collect information on all the hiking trails in the world. To organize by country, region and cities and to provide detailed information. Enough so that anyone could print out the information from wikitrails and hike the trail. It would include pictures from trails as well as maps and the history of given area, as well as links to known wildlife and vegetation in that area.
Detailed Summary and Rationale[edit]
As of now there exist many different resources and knowledge bases for trails concerning hiking and backpacking. At present there is no one great free source of reliable information.
Why not Wikipedia[edit]
Though it is hard to say one way or another, I don't believe this would fall under wikipedia. I also believe that the current project WikiProject Hiking Trails is indeed noble but unsuccessful. The reason that it does not succeed is because unless you know the name of a trail it would be hard to find but this is not the way most people would look for trails. A more logical approach would be for someone to identify where they are going and then to see if trails exist close to their destination.
I also believe that though important trails with historical importance have a place in wikipedia but every small trail that exists should not be described on wikipedia because trails are not really encyclopedic knowledge. Though it is a possiblity that this could belong as a subsection under wikitravel.
