As Wikipedia reaches a print version, it may be worth considering taking smaller steps forward to test the waters. One possibility is creating a Wikipedia magazine, published monthly (or quarterly, or whatever), based on existing texts.

Definition[edit]

The Wikipedia magazine will consist of five or six featured articles along with various other features, such as random trivia, vocabulary builders, contests, interviews, editorials, etc. It will be printed in glossy format and made available by subscription for a nominal fee (it might also be sent to libraries, etc.). It might also include paid advertising, to help cover printing costs.

Advantages[edit]

  1. Brief selections of articles will be carefully selected and edited for inclusion.
  2. Emerging writers and photographers might compete to have their work included in the Wikipedia magazine, thereby increasing our contributor base and the level of content.
  3. Widespread distribution will help make Wikipedia and its associated projects household names.
  4. A subscription to the magazine can be offered as a mebership incentive.
  5. A percentage of advertising fees can be set aside for the Wikimedia Foundation.
  6. Most of the material needed to launch the magazine already exists.

Problems[edit]

  1. Labor intensive
  2. Initial start-up costs
  3. Formatting (spelling and date conventions, etc.) may have to be resolved.
