History

[edit]

Project was discussed during the first Central Asian WikiCon'25 in Tashkent with local wikimedians. On May 10th, 2025, Mirfayzbek Abdullayev proposed organizing the workshop to CEE Hub microgrants program. After the acceptance of the proposal, Mirishkorlik one of the active users of Wikimedians of Uzbek language User group introduced the workshop to the other members of the User Group in online meet-up of June.

Program

[edit]

Day 1

[edit]

The organizing team gathered all participants at the regional Youth Center, where they were trained on how to contribute to Wikimedia projects, including the basics of editing Wikipedia and uploading media files to Wikimedia Commons. The main venue on the first day was the library of the center. The organizing team taught the participants by collaboratively creating a new article based on a reference, allowing them to practice the process step by step. After the lesson, each participant translated one article from English or Russian into Uzbek. During the workshop, we introduced the participants to contributing to Wikidata, highlighting its importance. They also linked relevant information to Wikidata in the articles they translated.

On the second day of the workshop, participants who were passionate about contributing to Wikimedia Commons visited the Odina Mosque and Museum of victims of Repression. They took numerous photos and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. In addition, they also uploaded photos from the Bekmir Madrasa.

Day 3

[edit]

On the third day, participants gathered in the conference hall of the center. By this time, they were familiar with the basics of editing Wikimedia projects. Therefore, they translated several articles related to young people, children, and their rights from English, Russian, and German into Uzbek. Active participants were awarded with certificates and awards by organizers.

Results

[edit]

The organizing team set a goal in the workshop proposal to translate no less than 50 new articles and upload no less than 100 media files. At the end organizing team counted number of articles using XTools which totalled 65 articles and 100 photos. The participants showed initiative by planning to continue this activity as a local Wiki club, involving themselves and other newcomers.

Organizing team wrote a report regarding the project. After that CEE Hub approved the report.
