From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Hello, you reverted my edition and I think we need to discuss it. I edited by a request from a Commons admin as you guessed. So you should talk with him, or it would be possible for him to revert your edit again.

As for Languages.php, our each project has now multilingual preferences. And as you pointed out in edit summary, it could be managed locally with MediaWiki files, but in my opinion it was too painful and waist of time for us to edit over 600 wikis on our entire project. (Recently we realized it strongly on Sitenotice editing. Promectwidely no local admin pay attention to those issues, like JAWP, though it was noticed in advance on the list, but none of 30 admins of that project reacted properly, as you know).

So I think it is better for us to edit directly languages.PHP; it was not only commons but other project request me to edit it to promote multilingualism on our project. But I can understand your opinion it should be retained as general as possible. But I expect you can understand we, or preciesely I have no time to edit all our wikis.

Any suggesion?

Your edit has two problems.
  1. LanguageXX.php are shared in all Wikimedia wikis. Links to "Commons:***" are not proper outside of Commons. In addition, to make reference to image galery pages and image categories are significant in Commons only.
  2. LanguageXX.php is a part of MediaWiki software. MediaWiki is a general-purpose wiki software, not only for Wikimedia wikis. Therefore, LanguageJa.php SHOULD NOT contain Wikimedia related messages such as "Wikipedia", "Commons", etc. For instance we should use {{SITENAME}}, {{ns:Project}} instead. (in Meta, SITENAME is "Meta", ns:Project is "Meta". see wikitext for detail)
Better solution to update MediaWiki messages over 600 wikis are to make some mechanism to help, such as helper scripts.

KoyomiBot[edit]

你可以给我一份KoyomiBot的code吗?我想可否用在zh wp?--Shizhao 14:01, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Sorry to late to reply. Cheebot (KoyomiBot) requires Ruby 1.8.0 or later. It seems to work with any language with UTF-8. Tietew 05:57, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hyper Estraider extension[edit]

There is no info on the Hyper_Estraier_extension page how to install it. Could you provide me with the details. Does it support any sort of wildcard search?

xml2sql[edit]

HI, just wanted to say that xml2sql has a strange behavior when called without parameters. It currently outputs a rather confusing "Not enough space". Just display the help screen if no parameters are given, and all will be set. :) -andy 84.149.74.117 08:16, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

xml2sql will just wait for stdin, when no parameters. For example, we can type
$ bunzip2 -c pages-meta-current.xml.bz2 | xml2sql
to pipe bunzip2 to xml2sql. What's your OS and version? Tietew 02:24, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Xml2sql error[edit]

Hello! When I try to convert a recent XML dump of Commons to SQL using Xml2sql, I get the error "unexpected element <redirect>". I have already applied the patch provided here, but to no avail. Can you help me? Kind regards, JovanCormac 10:11, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Add redirect tag to xml2sql[edit]

Hi!

Sorry to bother you, but as other people has commented xml2sql stopped working since the introduction of <redirect> tag.

It is a pity since it is a very useful tool.

I was wondering if you could look into it and incorporate it to xml2sql. It should be easy to do, however I was unable to succesfully fix it.

Thanks! — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.184.58.60 (talk)
