Template:Contribute [edit]

This is a suggestion for (adding) a hyper-link to the web page Terms of Use -- that is, I mean http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Terms_of_Use .

I noticed that, in section "7", there ("Licensing_of_Content") [1], in sub-section "g", "Re-use:", the first sentence mentions "content contributed under "fair use" or similar exemptions under copyright law.". That part contains the quoted phrase "fair use".

My suggestion is that the quoted phrase "fair use" there, should be (or 'have') a w:hyper-link to the English Wikipedia article Fair use -- that is, to the web page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use .

I almost started to "edit" the page myself (by force of habit!) before I realized that it does not work like a typical Wikipedia article page -- (hence this [feedback] "comment").

Terms of use/cs updated and ready [edit]

Could somebody please publish the updated (a missing word added) Terms of use/cs to foundation:Terms of use/cs? (And, possibly, check the wikisyntax, as the current version has broken formatting of the list in section 7. Licencování obsahu.) (I am not sure if there is an automated process working somewhere, or I need to make a request somewhere.) Thanks. --Mormegil (cs) 22:30, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

It's updated. Thank you. I would love it if we had some system that would notify somebody (even me!) when translations are updated, but unfortunately I don't think we have that function yet. :/ Making a request here is probably your best call at this point. :) --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 15:15, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Template:Contribute [edit]

I wonder if disallowing Commercial use for images; eg: CC-BY-NC-SA would encourage more professional photographers to put up their work, especially hi-res images. I'm a contributor and I'll continue to be here, but I'd feel a lot better if Wikimedia encouraged those making commercial use, to share their earnings with the original artists. It makes free art sustainable for folks like me and generally creates an environment of goodwill amongst artists and commercial publishers.

Sumeetmoghe (talk) 06:53, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Sumeetmoghe, I used to think the same thing -- in fact, I wrote a blog post about it a while back that sparked some really interesting discussion. (The comments from Greg Maxwell and Peter Tillman are particularly illuminating.)
The biggest problem with the "NC" provision, in my view, is that it defeats the main value of a general license: establishing clear intent. There are so many ways the word "commercial" can be interpreted that, in practice, a would-be reuser of an "NC"-tagged photo often has to check with the photographer to determine whether or not the use is considered commercial…in which case, why even bother with a general license to begin with? One of the main purposes of using these licenses is to reduce the kind of friction that can bog down a collaborative project.
That part is just my opinion, I suppose. You can see the WMF's board-approved policy here: foundation:Resolution:Licensing policy You also might be interested in this reflection on the "NC" provision: freedomdefined.org/NC Hope this helps! -Pete F (talk) 20:41, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Vogone, I've been managing translations this year for a number of different pages on Meta and we've opted to no longer use that old system and instead use the Translate extension. I've not been able to get around to re-doing translations for Foundation wiki, but would you like to help out in organising these translations using that interface instead of the older one? I just got Email from Wikipedia <donate@wikimedia.org> to my PayPal Email! I don't like that at all. I B<DO NOT> want wiki poking around my personal Email addresses, etc. Just because I used PayPal to donate B<DOES NOT> mean that I have given permission for wiki to I<scrape> or I<save> the B<PayPal Login ID> that I used. If this ever happens again, that's the end to my donations.

76.220.215.56 19:10, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, I apologize if this upset you in any way. When making a donation, we generally ask for name, address, and email, depending on your chosen payment method. We use this information to send a tax receipt/donation confirmation as well as update you on any fundraising-related activities. Generally we send 2-3 emails per calendar year. As stated in our donor privacy policy, we don't rent, sell, trade, or share this information. We also offer an opt-out option at the bottom of all email messages, and I'd invite you to take advantage of this. If you have any other fundraising questions, the team can be reached at donate@wikimedia.org. Thank you again for your continuing support! Best, Jvandavier (talk) 23:58, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Accept Bitcoin donations. It is easy.

Many will donate, including me.

72.235.248.53 01:49, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Have you read wmf:Answers archive/November 2011#Finance: Why does the Wikimedia Foundation not currently accept Bitcoin?? Perhaps this question/answer is worth an entry in the FAQ page. --MZMcBride (talk) 01:25, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Talk:FAQ/en [edit]

I can't add changes to the FAQ on donations, how come ?

Anyway, if someone reads, I don't see any info regarding detailed expenses and where the offices of wikipedia are held. 40+ million dollars on the whole of wikipedia with 20% spent on 140 employees sounds like a lot of money being spent on them. Seriously now, what's up with that ? I also have not seen anything related to remote work. Most wikipedia "jobs" could be remote jobs like UI Designer, software engineers, community advocate. Or does wikipedia not know how to hire the best people for the lowest costs ?

188.25.63.127 23:59, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

But if you think of that, 20% of $40 million = $8 million. That divided by 140 employees averages to about $57k - I would consider that reasonable. I know nothing about remote work's extent but I know that at least some system administrators do so.--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:49, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments. The Wikimedia Foundation website at wikimediafoundation.org is locked to public editing because of security concerns. You can suggest specific changes on this page. The Wikimedia Foundation offices are located in San Francisco, California, United States (more location info is here). The Foundation does hire contractors and remote employees, although for the purpose of collaboration, it is simplest to maintain a workforce in one central location. In the United States, San Francisco is a popular location for technology-related industry and the Wikimedia Foundation pays its employees competitive wages. You may be interested in reading this rather extensive community discussion on that subject.  ono  02:51, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

WMF BoT pages [edit]

User:Mhalprin is out of date. It should indicate that he is no longer a board member per wmf:Former Board of Trustees members.

Could we add a link at the beginning of wmf:Board of Trustees#Bishakha Datta to en:Bishakha Datta or User:Bishdatta or wmf:User:Bishdatta, as all other entries start with a link to either a user or wikipedia page.

Also could we add the username of Arne Klempert to wmf:Former_Board_of_Trustees_members#Arne_Klempert for the sake of consistency and transparency (and perhaps not link to his personal portal website as the first link). --John Vandenberg (talk) 01:16, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Template:Contribute [edit]

I would be more than happy to contribute financially - it's only that wikipedia has adopted an ideological stand about the use of useful neologisms such as "consumocracy" - and destroyed a whole page on this fascinating issue!

24.53.45.81 16:11, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for your interest in Wikipedia, and for being willing to donate. However, Wikipedia is a "wiki", which means that everyone can edit pages—including you. You don't need to apply or get special permission to join us. At the top of each page is an "edit" label. Try it for example at <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sandbox>, a practice area where you can make changes. You don't even need to log in to edit, although creating an account gives you more options and helps you keep track of your contributions. You can create an account at <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:UserLogin/signup>. There is no central editorial board that decides the content of articles (including the article concerning "consumocracy"); all edits are made by individual members of the Wikipedia community. Wikipedia is a work in progress, and some of our pages will occasionally fall below the standard our readers have come to expect; for this, we can only apologise and invite you to fix the article yourself! Best wishes, AGK [•] 22:41, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Special:UserLogin/signup [edit]

Jack Would (talk) 09:51, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to do. If you are trying to log into the Wikimedia Foundation website at [7], you will be unable to do so because that website is not open to public editing. If you are trying to log in to your account on Wikipedia or one of the other Wikimedia Foundation projects, please select the project you wish to create an account on from this list, open the project website, and click the "log in / sign up" link on that website. Hope this helps! AGK [•] 22:36, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Trademark policy [edit]

The trademark policy describes the font as "Hoefler Text". This is no longer correct. The font is now Linux Libertine.

Pokajanje (talk) 22:18, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for your comment. However, we are unable to update that page because it contains a Board policy that can only be changed if the Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees votes to do so. The correction should be made when (or if) the Board updates or replaces their policy. If it's any consolation, the error is a very small one that should not affect our users too much; and if I may say so, you did very well to spot the error at all! Thanks again, AGK [•] 22:34, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
I've passed this on to one of the lawyers at the WMF to figure out whether/how to update that resolution. Philippe (WMF) (talk) 09:31, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Thank You/fi [edit]

There's a mistake in the translation. "Katso, kommenttiasi." means "Look, at your comment" and the link points to a page that shows donation history. 82.181.33.66 07:24, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I'm not sure what the mistake in the translation is. Can you be more explicit, please?
The link is pointing to wmf:Special:ContributionHistory/fi, it looks like. I believe ContributionHistory got merged into FundraiserStatistics, but I don't really remember. It should probably just have the link removed. --MZMcBride (talk) 22:54, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
It is definitely wrong. The is no "Thank you for your donation" line at all, but it really says "Look, at your comment." And the Fundraiser Statistics page no longer shows the year 2012 nor does it show the year 2013. I donated money in 2012 and got this message as a response. Here's looking at you, kid. Please point me to the translatable page on Meta so it can be corrected for the year 2014 at least. And please publish the Statistics. --Pxos (talk) 01:23, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
And it is impossible to find the page where WMF pages have been imported. I cannot edit the WMF page and I cannot find the source page. I usually do not correct mistakes in translations because I spend half an hour searching the source page and get tired and go away. --Pxos (talk) 01:33, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
On wmf:Thank You/fi, if you look at the source code, you will see:
| comments-text = Katso, kommenttiasi. Tämän jälkeen lue siitä, miksi muut lahjoittajat ympäri maailman tukevat Wikipediaa myös tai katso jos yritykselläsi olisi yhteistyöohjelma.
Would you like that to be changed, and why? πr2 (t • c) 02:07, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
There is no source code available to normal people. Try logging out and viewing the page. Some parts of source code can be deciphered from the page history. I have now found the source pages on Meta. The source is here: Fundraising 2009/supplementary messages/fi. The WMF thank you page uses the section four of the Thank You message for some reason. The same problem exists for the Norwegian version as well. --Pxos (talk) 02:14, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I would like that to be changed because it is wrong. If you want to know how it should be changed, where can I post the suggested changes? Should there be a link to the Statistics where there used be information on 2012 but which has been subsequently removed, or should the link be removed altogether? The quick fix would be to remove the first sentence and replace it with "Kiitos lahjoituksestasi!". --Pxos (talk) 02:22, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure you can see the source. I wasn't logged in either. ;) Just click on "Suggest a change" and scroll down. Alternatively, [8] makes it easier to see (hiding the "suggest a change" box). Also, you can download/view the raw source on [9] or [10], but I digress. Can you please say exactly what you'd like changed again? I'm a bit confused. πr2 (t • c) 02:22, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
I see you've added the instructions while I was editing. Shall I fix it? πr2 (t • c) 02:24, 15 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the fix. I can view the source now as the Meta-induced blood pressure has come down and my vision is not clouded by frustration. The main problem with the translation seems to be that the main part of English text are changed every year, and so much material should be translated to other languages. Some basic messages should stay the same so that not everything required updating, translating and stuff. Even English is better than outdated translations. --Pxos (talk) 02:38, 15 March 2013 (UTC)

Good day!

I'm from Russia, and, unfortunately, my English skills are horrible. I will write in Russian and duplicate text, translated by Google Translate. I and my family have long read and love Wikipedia. And every time we see a request for a donation - we are ready to do it, because then stored truly fundamental and great knowledge. BUT! In Russia, almost everyone has a cell phone with which it can immediately send a paid sms and so make a donation. But the scope of payment through electronic money (e-mail account / purse) is not highly developed. With regards to credit cards - people are afraid of elementary and do not like the internet to enter personal data, fearing the routine work of this information. Talk about 100% security can be any number, but that's our mentality. For all these reasons, I (we) ask yet implemented for Russian citizens, readers Wikipedia, can make mobile donations via mobile account. Believe me, this is (probably) will be more effective. For himself and his friends swear :) Thank you for your attention, and for the great work you are doing. This is priceless.

Hi. We have wmf:Mobile Giving for people in the United States of America. Unfortunately, I don't believe there's currently any equivalent page for Russia. :-( --MZMcBride (talk) 20:02, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Succes

Dank u wel. AGK [•] 11:01, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi there!

I'd like to propose that at the message where you invite to donate for Wikipedia, you insert an encounter of money needed / money collected. I think it'd adiitionally reflect thу principles of Wiki such as clarity, faithfulness and actuality, and might raise donations.

Hi there. The donations page is as minimalist as possible, but the FAQs (linked from the donations landing page) do answer the question "How much money are you hoping to raise?". I think any donor who was interested in the target for our fundraiser could find that page quite easily. As for the total amount of money collected, I can't think of a way for us to display that information; a very up-to-date total is only, I think, kept during a fundraising drive. Thanks for your comments, AGK [•] 10:57, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi Net banking option is not find for donate..

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Wikimedia Foundation. At this time, the Foundation can accept donations by credit card, PayPal, checks, bank transfers, or Moneybookers, as listed on our ways to give page. With potential donors worldwide, we realise that some may be unable to use these donation methods, and we are looking to expand our options in the future. AGK [•] 10:51, 26 March 2013 (UTC)

Volunteer opportunities [edit]

Hi,

Halfway the text there is this phrase: "The Teahouse help new editors become accustomed ..." I'm not a native speaker but shouldn't is be 'helps' (with an 's')?

I'm glad I could make a donation. I belief that the value of wikipedia is beyond imagination. It's not only a tremendous source of information but it's also a perfect example of what can be achieved when people work together.

Thank you (all ;-)!

I think the British use the singular when referring to organizations/companies and the like. I've fixed it since, I believe, we use American spelling and conventions on the site. Or it could just be a typo. Anyhow, it's gone! Thanks for the tip. Killiondude (talk) 22:12, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

wikimediafoundation.org [edit]

you list false information on your website about who owns tv nova in eastenrn europe .it is jewish family- Harlens .you hide truth!who are there accomplices? elizabeth arden line owners -can you list ?

Hi. This page is for discussing content on the Wikimedia Foundation Wiki (see). It sounds like you're probably asking a question about content on Wikipedia in one of its many languages. I'm afraid we can't help with that here. You can try asking at the talk page of the article itself on whichever project it exists - they are edited just like this one - or you might write to info at wikimedia.org, which is run by volunteers who are experienced editors. If you write them, please give a link to the article. If English is not your first language, you can in most cases write in your native tongue and receive a response from a volunteer who speaks it. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 15:05, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

wikimediafoundation.org Foundation:Conditions d’utilisation [edit]

Hello,

Could you correct the difference beetween Foundation:Conditions_d'utilisation#7._Licences_applicables_au_contenu and Foundation:Terms_of_Use#7._Licensing_of_Content ? There is a big different on numbering of sections (a, b, c, d,). In Foundation:Conditions_d'utilisation#7._Licences_applicables_au_contenu, the section b is empty !

Excuse-me for my bad english, but I'm a french contributor,

Regards,

Rory [edit]

please dont blocked

I wonder, if the non-essential legal claims, complaints, and amicus curiae letters should really be addressed to Rory? Would it be contrary to the non-humorous principle that all matters are dealt with promptly and with proper disregard? If he does not take care, someone will eventually question his copyright status or defend a stuffed animal's right to appear in a picture. Hats off for WMF! --Pxos (talk) 00:08, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

uk ns8 mistakes, localization of sidebar etc. [edit]

Hi. This message does have something strange: foundation:MediaWiki:Contactus/uk, the sidebar almost not localized to Ukrainian - it should be (if I have the access I can do it). But some language selector should be used there as it is at the top of this wiki, wd that is seeable for anons too. If I go to [11] then I see Головна сторінка (Main page in Ukrainian) and link is to Головна сторінка too that is not exists - or link should be fixed (not for Ukrainian only sure) or some localizations of Main page (Home) should be done (The best is to enable Extention:Translate and make getting access easier). So fix all the things I asked please and say is localization of the interface there (other translations AFAIK should be done here but now they are outdated too) a good reason to ask the access or no. --Base (talk) 19:24, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Board of Trustees [edit]

I guess that page could use an update to reflect the resignation of Ting. --MF-W 01:10, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for spotting this, if you'd like to request an account to fix this yourself, I'd be more than happy to create you one! Thehelpfulone 08:06, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I declined this already on IRC, to avoid being drawn into wasting too much non-existing time with editing there as well. Nevertheless I would love it of course if someone (maybe one of the fabulous staffers who run foundationwiki) could update the page. How abusive is it to have wrong info about your own Board! --MF-W 22:04, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Ads allegedly covering the text of articles [edit]

I am sure that the advertising helps to defray a lot of expenses. However, the ads now COVER the text of the articles and are so obnoxious that they cannot be made to disappear so that we can read the articles. This makes the main presentation of the website unusable. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.30.125.205 (talk • contribs) .

Can you please provide a screenshot of what you're describing? --MZMcBride (talk) 02:07, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
I can assure you that Wikipedia doesn't have ads, and has no intention of ever putting ads on the site.
I believe what you're seeing is due to a piece of software accidentally installed on your computer. There are a number of web browser plugins which insert advertisements into Wikipedia pages. Most of these are malicious - they pretend to be something else (such as a search bar, download manager, etc.), and once installed, they force ads into pages you're reading.
This sort of thing seems to be on the rise - we've had a few cases reported to us over the past few months - but unfortunately there's not much we can do to stop them. We can, however, advise you on how to remove it!
If you look in your web browser's preferences or settings menu, there should be a section titled "extensions" or "plugins" or "addons" - you can individually remove or disable plugins from here. The plugins go by a variety of names; look for any you don't remember installing, or which don't seem to come from a trusted source, and remove these - then restart the browser and see if the ads are gone.
For more information, please see <https://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/05/14/ads-on-wikipedia-your-computer-infected-malware>. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk)
Err, Wikipedia regularly has advertisements (for Wikimania, for elections, etc.). :-) Without a screenshot or further information, it's really difficult to diagnose what's going on here, though I agree with your suspicion that this may be malware. That was my first thought as well, I was just worried about causing a false panic. --MZMcBride (talk) 15:42, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
