Regarding Local chapters overlapping divs[edit]

The list of local chapter addresses seen at the page above (and many others — the text is transcluded from wmf:Template:Local chapters and wmf:Template:Chapters addresses, ultimately being rendered using wmf:Template:Chapters addresses/layout) is "unusable" (on some browsers, at least?) because someone has hardcoded the "height" parameter to use either 190 or 180px in the "layout" template, which causes the addresses' "div" boxes to overlap. Someone please fix this. (Might it be preferable to set the heights in the individual "/ISOCODE" subtemplates, instead of in the "/layout" template? And using "em" or "ex" units, instead of "px"?) - dcljr (talk) 00:22, 15 July 2014 (UTC)

It looks ok to me. Could you upload a screenshot, and/or indicate on which browsers it fails? --Waldir (talk) 01:34, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
This is what it looks like actual size (but aggressively cropped) on my 1920×1080 screen in Firefox 17.0.9 for Linux. [1] - dcljr (talk) 10:25, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
Also the translated pages for ar, fa, ja, zh have forgotten Wikimedia Canada.
Why not simply setting widths and heights in ems instead of pixels ? and "overflow:visible" is amost always undesirable. (overflow:auto would bot help uncreasing sizes if cells of the "matrix" need to have all the same height so they line up correctly. I understand why you don't use a table (because a fixed number of columns would not work with narrow screens that cannot fit all without requiring an horizontal scrollbar, absent from mobiles supporting often only the vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling requiring javascripts to capture panning touch events, for example when viewing enlarged images).
Immediately the pixels sizes are assuming fonts working only on desktop PCs and some Macs. The sizes do not work on mobiles.
Using sizes in em (use "line-height:1.5", not any value velow 1.5, and then count 1.5em per line (this will work with smartphones that have large fonts needing more pixels than desktops, due to their very high pixel density, needed to readability of letters in smaller physical sizes, but even then many users feel the character sizes are too small and use accessibilty options in their smartphones, so they can't fit more than avout 30 characters per line when the phone us in normal vertical orientation, or 50 characters in horizontal orientation; a single column will fit, and possibly only two in the horozontal screen viewing mode, if not using accessibility options for larger fonts).
Users of tablets with diagonals above 5 inch are not impacted so much (the physical pixel density is smaller than on smartphones, fonts have sizes in pixels near the desktop, but still there are less choices of builtin fonts, e.g. in lowcost Android tablets, used in Asia and Africa). Users of veru wide screens (such as HDTV, observe it from a distance where the HD content will use fonts with larger than expected heights in pixels, they are in the same situation as users of smartphones with high pixel densities).
Then don't use too narrow widths, and allow the column to fit an address on up to 6 lines (, plus up to 2 lines for the contact addresses, plus 1 additional line for the bold titles in ar,fa,ja,zh, you get a height of 8 or 9 lines for a total of 12em or 13.5 em in ar,fa,ja,zh. The width should be able to fit address lines of up to 50 characters, i.e. about 30em. Finally, all addresses can be set so that lines will fit correctly in that width (you may play with the placement of the country name grouped with the zip code, or pack address complements after the first line of the local name of the Wikimedia chapter, but separate from the line with zipcode/postcode. You can expect one line to be wrapped with the total of 8 or 9 lines i.e. 12 or 13.5 em. verdy_p (talk) 20:41, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
I tested the solution I proposed in various screen sizes and viewing modes, on dekstop PC, HDTV and Android smartphone and tablets , and the address boxes fit correctly and line up correctly with style="float:left;line-height:1.5;height:15em;width:25em" (you may reduce the width to 20em to fit a possible additional column on wide screens, fiven that linewraps are still enabled. Note: no overflow set (the default is overflow-x visible biut with linewraps enabled, and the cumfortable height, this is not a problem, vut if you're not cumfortable with it, allow overflow-y:auto so that vertical scrollbars can appear conditionally)!.

So, can someone actually make the change on the wiki? Hello? - dcljr (talk) 00:07, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
@Dcljr: Please could you confirm the exact change that needs to be be made, and on which page? I'm unable to figure it out from the discussion above (at this late hour!) Thanks. Thehelpfulone 00:12, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
Since the Foundation wiki is completely locked down for us ordinary folks, I have not verified Verdy_p's fix, but the suggestion appears to be to change the contents of wmf:Template:Chapters addresses/layout to:
<div style="float:left;line-height:1.5;height:15em; width:25em;">'''<span style="margin-left:2em;">{{{2|}}}</span>'''{{Chapters addresses/{{{1}}}}}</div>
or, if the default overflow method doesn't give good results for both wmf:Template:Chapters addresses and, say, wmf:Template:Chapters_addresses/for/ja, then:
<div style="float:left;line-height:1.5;height:15em; width:25em; overflow-y:auto;">'''<span style="margin-left:2em;">{{{2|}}}</span>'''{{Chapters addresses/{{{1}}}}}</div>
Of course, you can fiddle with the height and width parameters yourself, if desired. I can give my opinions after the change is made, but only for FF on (desktop) Linux. I guess you can ping Verdi_p for a final check on all those other platforms mentioned above. - dcljr (talk) 00:40, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
Tested but the result is only 3 rows, in Hwalls's version are 4 rows. --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:09, 20 July 2014 (UTC)
What do you mean by "3 rows" and "4 rows"? Since you've reverted it, no one else can see the result for themselves. Please change it back, so we can look at it. (If you haven't already, see what Hwall's version looks like on FF 17.0.9 for Linux, which I linked to above. I think we can agree, that is not how it's supposed to look.) - dcljr (talk) 00:05, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
Ping: Hwalls --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:05, 21 July 2014 (UTC
Hi all. I did not create those pages or those templates, I only tried to help when there was a problem at one time. Please feel to make the fixes as I sadly do not have the time right now. heather walls (talk) 23:12, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
So I guess no one's going to fix this... - dcljr (talk) 13:39, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
Hello? ... Note that almost no one can actually fix this since it's on the Foundation wiki. Someone with editing rights on that wiki needs to fix it. (@Steinsplitter:?) As stated before, the current implementation is not acceptable because it hardcodes values in pixels. For the simplest possible change, just replace height:{{#if:{{{2|}}}|190|180}}px; width:270px; by height:{{#if:{{{2|}}}|16|15}}em; width:16em; (which works for me) and then, if necessary, adjust the values upwards to something that works for you (I wouldn't recommend adjusting them downwards). This won't give something that works universally, but it'll be a lot more "robust" than what's currently there. - dcljr (talk) 18:18, 15 September 2014 (UTC) [EDIT on 23:19, 15 September 2014 (UTC): used "nowiki" tags to show full code snippets]
diff - Dos not work for me. If not this template, please give me an exact link to the template. --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:52, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
@Steinsplitter: your links to diffs are useless because no one can see the result of your changes after you revert them. What do you mean it doesn't work? It had no visible effect? Did you purge the page cache and/or your browser's cache? Can you please make a change and leave it for more than 2 minutes so someone other than you can see the results?? - dcljr (talk) 22:53, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
BTW, that was the correct template, but you didn't make the correct change. Please reread my comment of 18:18, 15 September. - dcljr (talk) 23:00, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Oh, crap. I needed to use "nowiki" tags so you could see all the changes I was talking about. OK...
Here's what should be done:
  1. edit wmf:Template:Chapters_addresses/layout
  2. change height:{{#if:{{{2|}}}|190|180}}px; width:270px to height:{{#if:{{{2|}}}|16|15}}em; width:16em (only changes are to the numbers and the units: px to em)
  3. check the Local chapters page (this link purges the page cache) and adjust numbers in template as necessary
That should do it. - dcljr (talk) 23:19, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
I removed float:left; accidentally, now works! Thanks. --Steinsplitter (talk) 06:58, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:Home[edit]

Hey there, I don't wish to log in and edit the bio of Dr. Charles F Stanley, but I do want you to note an omission in his bio: He has a son that you have listed, but he also has a daughter who is not listed. Her name is Becky Stanley Brodersen. This can easily be verified by a google search.

I listen to Dr. Stanley on a weekly basis by watching his In Touch program and he has spoken of his daughter and she was sitting beside him when his son was giving the speech about their father on his 80th birthday.

Regarding FAQ/en[edit]

Wikipedia is only an "encyclopedia" if that word is now defined as a collection of absurdly bigoted, biased propaganda masquerading as neutral information. Why should we donate our hard-earned money to that? I tried to improve your encyclopedia, and my edits were removed. I complained about the ubiquitous bias, and I was banned. Wikipedia's headquarters should be burned down, and those in charge of this so-called encyclopedia should be dead instead of those driven to suicide by the hate and bigotry like we find on Wikipedia. What will we be required to do to get all the bigotry and hateful lies off of Wikipedia? Will a face-to-face meeting help? Do I need to make threats of violence? What course of action must one take? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk)

Threats of violence are not tolerated and may well be illegal depending on where you live. They won't achieve anything other than getting you banned. You should note that the Wikimedia Foundation does not control the content of the English Wikipedia - that is determined by the community. If you have specific concerns regarding the neutrality or bias of articles there are plenty of editors within the Wikipedia community who would be more than willing to listen to your concerns and help address them as long as you maintain a civil approach. foundation:Notices received from search engines[edit]

On the foundation:Notices received from search engines page (I think this is used mainly/solely for "right to be forgotten" notices), it would be helpful to put actual links to the articles, in addition to the images. It would be a little more work, but it would make them more accessible. Superm401 | Talk 04:52, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

I looked to the end of an entry to find a copy/paste attribution section. I found the licensing statement, but I was looking for something a quick copy for something shorter than the URL to the article I snipped some information from.

I will add that my source is through the WikiMedia Foundation, but if you want something different, you might make it easier to discern.

Regarding Hindi Wikipedia[edit]

What is wrong with hindi wikipedia?

  • admins are making pages in english language on hindi wikipedia---example hi:अबख़ाज़िया---and it seems you cant question about such activity to admins, if you question them they are threating you with a ban
  • why admins on hindi wikipedia encouraging pages which lack references---isnt it against wikipedia policy
  • why users are being allowed to create pages about themselfs on hindi wikipedia---example hi:हेमंत शेष---isnt it against wikipedia policy
  • regional bias being shown on hindi wikipedia.....discrimination based on region taking place on hindi wikipedia where people from delhi, rajisthan and madhya pradesh states of india have taken full control of hindi wikipedia
  • most of the pages present on hindi wikipedia are non neutral point of view, biased, lacking references.....and admins are not bothered about it......and you can neither add tags nor request admin to add tags to such pages.....if you do such things you are threatened with ban....
it is high time for stewards to look into this mess called hindi wikipedia as it appears hindi wikipedia is not following wikipedia foundation's basic policies......

PLEASE after people donate take them back where they were when you ask for the donation. You ask for money and if user complies then you make them jump through hoops and BS to get back to work.

I'll think twice about donating again because I'm 71and retired and my time is worth more.

Thanks very much for your feedback and your support! This is an improvement we would very much like to make to our donation process, however our small team has technical limitations. We may have higher priorities to implement in the immediate term, but appreciate your input in making the donation process the best it can be. The page should have a section about "who donates". I was asked this several times, and I cannot find a good answer on the WMF pages... As in - do we know anything about the donors? Rich, poor, young, old, breakdown by country, etc.? --Piotrus (talk) 09:04, 22 August 2014 (UTC)

Piotrus: You can try e-mailing donate at or answers at I imagine answering this question will require some quick research on the part of someone on the fundraising team. There may be donor demographic info buried on Meta-Wiki somewhere. On the other hand, I'm not sure we ask many questions when people donate. Once we have something definitive, it'd be great to update FAQ/en, I agree. (That whole page is falling apart.) --MZMcBride (talk) 22:03, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Regarding Template:PrivacyLang[edit]

This template is not necessary ({{languages}} should be sufficient, which works great on wmf:Terms of Use), and it's not mobile-friendly (check: mobile page).--fireattack (talk) 00:14, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Wait, why only the English version of Privacy policy is on WMF, others are on meta? --fireattack (talk) 00:17, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

Soliciting donations when you are a) sitting on a $50 million plus pile of cash, and b) pissing it away antagonising the community (cough! MediaViewer cough!)??? That's pretty cheeky, that is.

Effectively, all this money goes to the WMF to compensate them for the very little work that they do: maintaining a server farm and dealing with legal questions is something that the two permanent employees were doing just fine back in 2005 or so. In the meanwhile, those who contribute the bulk of the effort (editors, admins, and the like) get sweet fuck all.

Regarding Talk:Press releases/Wikimedia Commons celebrates its 10th anniversary[edit]

These comments go to Katherine, I guess.

This is good—it contains all the right ingredients. But I'm presuming that a press release like this should be a smooth, easy read for journalists. It's just a bit laboured in a few places. I presume an image was not regarded as suitable—I guess it might have been hard to be exclusive, but I'd want one (or a few to choose from) if I were using this in a publication or on the web.

A few niggles.

  • The top bullet ... just slightly too long and clunky, to me. Perhaps avoid repeating "Wikimedia Commons", which they read two seconds before.
  • "came into being"—a bit metaphysical; try "was launched".
  • The "USA" should be dropped, and it's unclear why "San Francisco" is in parentheses—makes it bumpy.
  • Double hyphens are not part of professional English—makes it look as though it was composed on a typewriter. Instead of --, please use an open – en dash, or a closed—em dash. See Chicago Manual of Style and the Oxford New Hart's Rules.
  • "The Wikimedia Foundation is extremely grateful to have a dedicated community of creators and institutions who continue to share their images and other media so that the project has flourished and will continue to thrive."—Very long sentence. Journalists do not like to stretch their readers like this, and right at the start. Needs a period after "media", then a punchy stub.
  • Pity there are two song sheets for "freely licensed" and "freely-licensed". The former is correct, and I'd have ironed it out of Lila's and Erik's quotes to avoid the clash.
  • "The Guinness Book of World Records named Wiki Loves Monuments the largest photo contest in the world, and it has inspired more 900,000 image uploads since 2010."—real problem with "it". Maybe "... world. This contest has ...".
  • "and it has inspired more 900,000 image uploads since 2010"—missing word: ouch.
  • have ensured.
  • "the increasing depth and richness of the illustrations for articles on Wikipedia"—clunky. What about: "the increasing depth and richness of illustrations in Wikipedia articles."
  • extremely -> very
  • "Today, Moeller is the Wikimedia Foundation’s Deputy Director and VP of Engineering, and Commons is the world’s largest repository of freely licensed educational media on the internet." Great sentence; but it doesn't flow clearly into the quote (we presume it's Erik's quote, but do they have to think carefully about it?).

zacapu article[edit]

Hi, my name is Javier Cervantes Perez from Zacapu, Michoacan Mexico. The reason of my letter to you guys, it is to let you know that I dont agree with the two lines written in the article about zacapu. These two lines stated lies about my home town, specially those talking of contamination and those talking about confronting lots of growing urban problems in the contrary I personally believe that those statements are affecting my town since nobody will not even try to invest in it. Please I really appreciate if you guys consider this situation by correcting it.

I really do not need a monthly letter for my tax purposes. One letter in January summarizing the previous years contributions would suffice and save postage. Thanks, Greg West, gregorywestgregorywest at

Regarding Grand Canyon[edit]

My comment is on the Grand Canyon. I have a very simple question. I would just like to know how or where I can find any records of the earth being older than what the Bible says it is when it was created. I can't find any record of any language or people, pictures, documents, witnesses or any writing that specifically tells me that a rock is a million years old, or 5 million years old.

The soonest communication that I have ever found to be fact, is only 6,000 years old.

Thank You so much for your helping me to understand how you came to this.

Patty Harner

The scientific consensus is that the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. 6000 years ago was (by some sources) around the time of the domestication of horses, and was extremely recent by geological standards. This was around the Copper Age in Europe. See w:Age of the Earth and its references for more information. If you're looking for writings, maybe read Charles Lyell or Hutton, but they were off by orders of magnitude if I remember correctly. But what does this have to do with the Wikimedia Foundation's wiki? PiRSquared17 (talk) 12:20, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Grazie. Regarding Talk:FAQ/en[edit]

All day on various computers I've been distracted and annoyed by the giant Wikimedia fundraising notice. There doesn't seem to be any place to discuss the fundraising and no links on the notice to such a page either. Why is it so big? It will have the opposite effect to what Wikimedia want surely? 1. I don't want to donate to Wikimedia (that's what charitable organizations and governmental cultural budgets are for) and 2. stop harassing us! 3. The last thing that would influence anyone is a personal message from Jimbo - how about nice images, comments from those who've found Wikimedia useful rather than the enemy of personal rights Mr Whales (referring to his opposition to the EU's right to be forgotten).--Xania (talk) 20:05, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

There are ongoing discussions on a similar theme on the Wikimedia Forum and on Jimbo's talk page at Wikipedia that you might find interesting. QuiteUnusual (talk) 10:04, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
You can discuss fundraising on Talk:Fundraising, on the fundraiser mailing list, or in our IRC channel #wikimedia-fundraisingconnect. To address your numbered points:
  1. We are a charitable organisation, and we don't receive funding from governments (partly because of the risk of bias, or perceived bias, that would cause). The vast majority of our donations are small ones from individuals.
  2. We do try to keep banners to a minimum, while still meeting our fundraising targets. You can always click the close button in the top right corner of the banner, and if you are logged-in to your account then you won't see banners at all.
  3. Our banners have evolved a lot in the past, and we no longer use a direct personal appeal from Jimmy Wales. Along the way we've tried (and continue to try) all sorts of things, including images and donor comments. The current message is the best we've found so far, and the more effective a banner is, the fewer times we need to show it. Also sorry to disappoint you, but the Wikimedia Foundation has itself spoken out against the European Court of Justice ruling, although of course we recognise there are diverse views on this.

Tweet This[edit]

The twitter link doesn't open in a new window/tab, it leads you away from the thank you page. This is annoying if you'd like to share on other platforms or answer the questionnaire. --TheGuyOfDoom (talk) 10:35, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

Why use mp3 at all? As it can't be used for media at Wikipedia. -- Cherubino (talk) 20:41, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Why don't you have links to Twitter and Facebook? Also, are there opportunities to go to a place and learn how to edit Wikipedia pages. This could be done on College campuses. I don't know how to edit (yet it is a skill I am sure I would be good at). If possible, let me know at eacorley at or 312/664-2631. Thanks, Ellen Corley

Regarding Talk:Thank You/en[edit]

Just a trivial cosmetic problem — I noticed that the country code is in the title for this page. “Thank You/en”

It's used by the translation system and it's not the country code. It's the language code. And you don't see the title on the actual page: wmf:Thank You/en. --Glaisher (talk) 12:10, 18 October 2014 (UTC)

Redirect wmf:ウィキメディア財団について to wmf:FAQ/ja[edit]

I suggest converting wmf:ウィキメディア財団について to a redirect to wmf:FAQ/ja. The former used to be linked from the main page and from the side bar, but not any more; its content is outdated, too. wmf:FAQ/ja is an alternative and more up-to-date. Please also update wmf:ウィキメディア財団 to avoid a double redirect. There are other language versions of it found in wmf:Template:AboutLang which might need similar fixes. whym (talk) 12:00, 20 October 2014 (UTC)

Regarding Talk:Negativity[edit]

ultimate negativity is base of whole cosmos ............ it is absolutely eternal .... it is also a basic fact and precosmic reality......... Universe begins within the emptiness and emptiness is the second name of negativity..... in the sam parameter the One Self aware existance stays permanently as well as perpetually. Negativity is the attribute of this strange unseen self aware entity or existance. space is positive but the vacumme is quite negative. negativity or emptiness both are the same but this everlasting and eternal as well. the negativity itself knows about his own existance. it is an unbelieveable myracle and most strange fact that this negativity or purest emptiness knows by itself eternally. Knowing itself is absolute positive within the existance of negativity. now knowing itself is one Information and negativity is second information. these are two information links with eachother. cosmos is a bit of information as well as time is also a bit of information. it proves that cosmos is merely made of information . Raw material of cosmos came out from within the negativity in the form or shape of only Information. Negativity or purest emptiness is the basement of whole cosmos consists of space and mass......... space is not empty........ it is filled of particles............. mass is made of tiny particles.......... and particles made of information ...... energy is also merely an information........... This universe is not the solid............. as you see it solidness.......... cosmos confirmly is unsolid ..... cosmos is truly photostat copy of self aware existance mutually links with negativity or emptiness................. negativity is Minus and negativity knowing itself is Plus. existance of negativity is Purely Negative and knowing its existance is purely Positive. cosmos existance is not minor thing or fact.......... cosmos existance is highly and extremly well managned and organised...... only knowing entity or self aware existance can made the creation of this most splendid and well organised Universe without no mistake...........yes no one can see a tiny mistake in the creation of this mighty cosmos............... This is the marvellous job of some Greatest Engineer that positively self aware and exists having the perpetual power of Negtivity.

Four interaction forces and Cosmis Ray exists from the eternal source of positivity. as eternal positivity has been mentioned above links with negativity...................

you believe it or not ............. but it is a ........... fact .... cosmically or non cosmically is ......... un-deniable.................

I want you to know that I rely on Wiki more often than I can think of! Thank you for having pretty much ALL the answers! It was an honor to donate this evening I wish I had done it sooner and I only with that it could have been more than $10.00.  :( When I think of how much you have helped me and how often I've said, "I need to send them money", I truly am embarrassed. I want you to know though that if I was to come into some money or to die, there is $1,000.00 with your name on it if not more. I will be writing it into my will and will remember you in the event that I come into some cash by easy means. Thank you once again for all your help! Maryann Maltman,

Regarding Talk:Problems donating[edit]

Wikipedia does nothing but ask for money. BOYCOTT DONATIONS! It is still possible to have an objective website with advertisements. The popups asking for donations are way more annoying than advertisements would be!

Thank you for clarifying the difference. I donated $5 and then saw the wikimedia, thought i had been got... lol... anyway, I am a student, unfortunately most instructors will not accept Wikipedia as an authoritative source, so I urge you to continue the excellent job of list and citing your sources, as this acts as a great resource library, probably the most complete and well displayed in the entire history of the world! Mike Trotman

ps. I am in the beginning stages of developing a non-profit myself. i would like to integrate Charity and Social Services with an inclusive rating/comparison component. The goal is to entice corporate donation via a competitive/comparative marketing component while also holding the service/provider networks accountable with a transparent and unified case management system. This site is cutting edge in theory and and design. Unfortunately, I am only a 1st year web design student, so it will be some time before i am able to code such interactive components. Also, the expense of managing this type of data and operating a grand service like I envision will take a miracle to achieve, but it is success like yours that lets me know it is possible, Thank You for the hope you give... Mike

Regarding Talk:Thank You/en[edit]

Désolé je ne comprend pas l'anglais mais je vous remercie de votre travail formidable. Tous mes encouragements selon mes moyens pour que vous puissiez continuer à nous instruire.

I give a small donation deducted from my account on a monthly basis. I get your monthly 'thank you' emails. I have tried to unsubscribe 3 times. I still get them. Please, don't send them to me. My email address is Thank you. <redacting>(please don't call unless you need additional information)

Thanks for commenting and for your support! US tax law requires us to send donation receipts, and if you donated online you will receive them via email. We also find that it's a sound business practice to notify donors when funds are transferred. Many email programs and clients will allow users to set up a filter, so that incoming email from a given address can be sorted directly to a folder other than the Inbox. I'm sorry we do not offer the option to forego the receipts. They are the only email you will receive from the Foundation; you have been unsubscribed from other communications, including fundraising appeals. Shorter receipts for recurring donations, with just the donation details, are a possibility for the future. I will email this information to you as well — and thank you again for your continued generosity! --CCogdill (WMF) (talk) 22:49, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

I agree that you need funds, but I do not agree with my address being used for publicity. If this should be the case as you announce and if I cannot decline this this will certainly not encourage me to donate again .... Sincerely yours K. Mannet

Regarding the piece on "JOHN WYCLIFFE", the first sentence under the heading "Public Declaration" contains the erroneous (malicious?) phrase, "Shiva his protector ...". Some misguided meddlesome Hindu devotee has likely inserted it I would imagine! Would you kindly correct it- many thanks.

I would have gone through your

     Questions related to donations:

But I would like to stay a bit private, thank you.

There is one place on the web, in general, that I easily make donations to. It is with special supporting groups that educate our young and older members on SL, Second Life. (Builder's Brewery and Arcadia are a few.)

So are any of your staff, members of SL? Opening an SL Group costs 100L, less then 50 cents. And Market Place stores are completely free.

Btw, a lot of folks will not join a group, because they are running out of group slots. But as one of the TOP educators on the web, many should gladly join your efforts on that group. Then, your group's membership could contact their groups and there's your donation dollars.

(Always have your members contact either the group's owner or a moderator, to discuss their donation request, it will keep everyone happy.)

And on your Market Place store, any and all items sold could act just like "donations" that cost you nothing, except a slight fee to the company.

Thanks for Listening.

. . . Tig . . . (I help to train a lot of SL newbies! :)

To whom it may concern,

I love the fact that Wikipedia exists at all. Seriously, thank you so much for the magical access to knowledge that you have provided me and millions of others. What a wonderful thing you have created, regardless of it faults. I am of the age when Microsoft Encarta was a boundless wonder given to the world (at a price, of course). It was unimaginable then, this open and free database of knowledge, accessible from our pockets. It really is a science fiction dream made reality.

To my point: I was looking for something and came across your appeal for funds; the one that begins "DEAR WIKIPEDIA READERS: This week we ask our readers to help us." And I really would love to, and will help you. The only thing is I can't at the time that I read your appeal. I'm sure that you welcome donations at any time, especially now when you need it. So, in a very long winded way I am saying that I would have benefited from an option in addition to the "how much would you like to donate" options which says "It's ok if you don't have the money right now, shall we remind you on payday?"

Sorry for the verbose message,

A very grateful user.

EDIT: If you are reading this and have used Wikipedia more than a couple of times, then you know how useful it can be. You really should donate. Imagine if it wasn't here any more next time you search a fact!

Regarding Privacy policy[edit]

I've been automating Wikipedia as an example of what I can do and noticed an inconsistency in the use of "Privacy Policy". The link to this page is correctly titled "Privacy Policy". But the title on the "Privacy Policy" page has a lowercase 'p' on the word "policy" and this occurs on and off throughout the page.

Regarding Data retention policy[edit]

I reached the [data retention policy] page from the [donor policy] page. I am uncertain how long donor information is kept.

Regarding Talk:Ways to Give[edit]

I looked at the entry for Entrust Bankcard and the last entry on that company said the BBB gives them an F. They must be an unstable company because of the way they do business. I was in a class action lawsuit against them or a business they sold to or changed their name to. I can't keep up with them. Check out their reviews. I think they need to be unmasked. Hopefully they are not hurting any more people at this time. I am 68 yrs old and am paying approximately $8,000 for an outdated processing machine I haven't used for 2 1/2 yrs. I will be finished paying it off in 2 1/2 more years. They lied from the time the salesman walked into my small bridal shop until the time I quit trying to contact them.

Judy Miller[edit]

I believe you have a minor spelling error in your Hebrew translation: you wrote: "מה אפשר לעשות כדי לעזור לכם לפרסם?" and you should write "מה אפשר לעשות כדי לעזור לכם להתפרסם?" (The first means "What can I do to help you show commercials" and the later is "What can I do to help you be famous").

I have a problem donating to Wikimedia and Wikipedia while the Wikipedia begging fundraiser has continued unabated for years the level of article censorship and malicious reverting and editing by moderators and administrators has skyrocketed. In other words, I donate money to the very people who spit in my face by vandalizing and censoring my articles to meet their own political agenda. The level of cyberbullying from censor editors such as Brandon Harris/Jorm shows an utter contempt for the Wikipedia user community and the Wikipedia rules. That is unacceptable and despicable. You won't get a cent from anyone I know.

I would be more inclined to donate on a regular basis but i have noticed on most subjects that are not political the accuracy is well maintained but when it comes to social and cultural conditioning i find that wkipeda tends to favor the main stream systems propaganda then the truth when it has to do with political and social content...

Regarding Special:UserLogin[edit]

Hello writers I think the story with FDR showed maturity in the son. And gave me a feeling of alertness but I couldn't lash out. Compelling a simple story.[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that the Donation banner is grossly insulting being as big as it is. Are you a nonprofit or beggers?

Thank you for being proactively "in my face" with asking for donation. (I'm talking about the screen that came up with the yellow highlighting where I couldn't go anywhere until I either donated or clicked out.) Each year I see the donation advertisement at the top of the screen and I intend to donate, but I am simply busy and don't get around to actually doing it. This year, with the big box that came up that wouldn't let me go anywhere until I clicked something, I took the two minutes it takes to donate and am happy I did. I am grateful for the work you do. Thank you :)

Hello: I was very excited to be able to donate to your site. I have never seen the fundraising "ask" before. HOWEVER, as I was about to pay for my donation, I read your note that states donating money actually gives you all my personal information and you state that you can share my information as you wish. Are you kidding me? So sorry. I will not pay to have my personally guarded information released.

Suggestion: Remove that condition and set up a base line of trust between you and those of us who very much want to support you. Say you will never release our personal information, and we would be trusted donors to your efforts. Ask yourself, what is more important, doing the right thing and honoring people who believe in you and want to give you money, and raising more money then you ever dreamed possible, OR, salivating over the possibility of exploiting a "hot" list of personal data.

I am a financial manager, working with lots of non profits. Those who have little to give, don't know how valuable their personal data is, and those who have deep pockets, thoroughly understand the VALUE of their personal information. It appears that your appeal is to the bottom dwellers.

BUT... everything is changeable. You could change your policy.

I took the time to write to you about this. Others would simple click off.

Sincerely, Barbara-Jo Osborne

Regarding Talk:Problems donating[edit]

Hi, So as a student, Wikipedia is pretty close to my heart. (Bless you guys, honestly) There's no criticism here, just a suggestion. When you guys ask for donations, maybe its an idea to display a progress bar? As in, set a specific goal as the end point, however much you need, and track the amount you get. Psychologically speaking (is my info saturated student showing?), if people see that others are donating, they're more likely to donate themselves. Also, you see a progress bar anywhere, you're gonna root for it to reach 100%. You get invested. So yeah, that's all I wanted to say. I mean, someone's prob already thought of it and its been vetoed, but just in case. Thanks for being awesome, hope all works out, I-need-to-get-back-to-my-paper

Dear Wikipedia Family

I'm a fond fan and avid user of your service. This is the second year I have not been successful in donating to the cause using my Visa card. I reviewed your helpful hints suggestions and don't believe the problem is with my bank as I have used the Visa account for numerous on-line purchases over the years with no problems. If this is a foreign exchange issue or clearance from my bank is needed to allow the transaction to go through I'm not comfortable with that. When this issue is resolved I will gladly return to donate.

Best regards, Bob Liedtke[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am a retired professional fundraiser (40 years) & advertising copywriter (5 years prior) & I professionally & respectfully suggest that you appeal to "fair share" support vs. if everyone would give $3 we could underwrite our needs in an hour.

First: Not everyone will give anything & this approach demonstrates the lack of successful fundraising experience of your leadership. Fair share support is the winning way to approach your investment invitation. Yes, investment. When I just contributed $10 I invested in me, as I am helping you to continue to exist for my own benefit.

Second: Virtually no one gives to other's needs, except life-&-death matters. We all have needs, & mine come way before yours. So show how your mission is meant for me & that my investment is not so much a gift to you as it is an investment in me through your being a quick, reliable information source for me.

Please take these suggestions to heart. I have raised millions of dollars in capitol campaigns, and the same basic rules for success apply to annual solicitations.

Without sounding too egotistical, my advice far outweighs the $10 I just contributed.

Merry Christmas,

Arnold (Arnie) R. Schaid

I value Wikipedia, but I will not donate until you desist in derogatory comments about naturopathic medicine and integrative medicine. You must allow licensed naturopathic doctors to give feedback, and block the self-appointed and self-righteous so-called "quackbusters" from spreading their filth. They have no right to slander reputable doctors such as myself, who are fully regulated. There are places where "naturopathy" is unregulated, but members of AANP in the USA or CAND in Canada are licensed, regulated, carry malpractice insurance, must have yearly continuing medical education, and have a legal right to treat illness with natural medicines. I am a duly licensed primary care naturopathic physician, able to prescribe pharmaceutical drugs as well as non-drugs (natural drugs), order labs, etc. Am I a quack to you when I prescribe antibiotics or steroids, or only when I use natural medicines? I think I have the training and the right to choose which to use with a given patient. I have on my website an article with hundreds of scientific references in support of the claims I make and the therapies I prescribe. I worked for years in cancer research (radiation therapies and radiosensitizing drugs). I continue to publish peer-reviewed articles. I do not need catechism in science from anyone. I do not tolerate the kind of trash Wikipedia is propagating on this subject, despite many requests from our physicians. So smarten up, and I will consider supporting you. Dr. Neil McKinney, BSC, ND

I would like to make a small donation but am not comfortable with all the information you ask for.[edit]

I think it's time to change the design of Wikipedia. You have the same design for years now. I found some design made by some artist and they are amazing :

Regarding Tax Deductibility/en[edit]

Mere status as a 501(c)(3) does not result in full tax deductibility of a donation. Wikiemedia's classification as a "public charity" does justify a deduction. Check with your tax attorney. (Your organization, if any, should get this right.)

I just made a donation in response to your...I thought...reasonable appeal considering help I've gotten in the past. Then I put the words, Kalevala , Jan Sibelius, and Lemminkainen in the search box. I couldn't believe it! you came up with nothing. Something has happened to you.

Where did you put those words in to the search box? On or on Wikipedia? At least the pages exist on Wikipedia. --Stryn (talk) 00:00, 6 December 2014 (UTC)[edit]

You want to raise money? I would purchase a USB Flash drive with offline Wikipedia on it... If you have this for sale I can't find it. If you create this it would be simple income to press copy on USB Duplicator... Even better would be a one click Update function included.... (and the whole world would be backing up your database). Your cost per 16Gb USB drive $6. Sell for $19, or $29... (Yes I can do this manually, but I would Pay not to, and to participate in supporting you....)

I love the premise of this site. It reminds me of what the original universities of the world had accomplished. The great libraries of China, Egypt and Syria before the invention of the idea that a person had to earn a degree to be considered intelligent and educated enough to be seen by the world as a professional in their field of study. This site, so long as the information is accurate, allows folks not only the ability to educate but to transcend the insane idea that once you've learned a prescribed course of study you're good to go. If your brain surgeon earned his degree in the 70's and chose to not further educate, would you knowingly still let him operate on you. I wouldn't. Education is a life long endeavor.[edit]

Everyone else on the internet accepts my credit card. Amazon, foreign airlines and hotels, US outdoor shops. But the card is rejected trying to donate to Wikipedia (twice now, several tries on the first occasion). There's something wrong with the organization collecting donations.

I have unified my accounts, but still, it does not let me log into the Wikimedia Foundation website ( Is this a bug? THere does not seem to be an option to create a login for that website, and in any event, I would prefer to have it unified with all the other wikimedia sites I use.

I find your service useful and use it frequently. I have Time Warner and they charge me $75.00 a month for internet access get the money from them.

I was about to donate when I read that my personal information would be shared. I don't wish to share my personal information but would like to donate. It would be nice if you would add that option. I am an older, private person who resents the assumed sharing of information on the net. NO PRIVACY, NO DONATION.[edit]

lo que Uds. tienen escrito COMO PAN DE PASCUA ES UN normal queque con frutas confitadas . es lamentable como le cambian la cultura al pueblo Chileno y lo declaran aun como criollo.

While everything on earth can always stand room for improvement, Wiki is a wonderful, successful and generous idea and entity, always there for all to share knowledge. What more could we wish for?!

I will NOT be donating, every time you nag me which is every time I use it only confirms that more.

I have spoken to your own foundation members, people like Mitch Kapor who have long told you that you need to take sponsorship and advertising to fund your site.

Those who do not want the ads can put their hands in their pockets themselves.

It does not have to be too obtrusive.

As it is when I Google stuff now I am starting to choose non-wikipedia sites and that is the beginning of the end.

So stop nagging me with your donation rubbish blocking content, just put a simple small donate button at the top right.

Please post this for every visitor to this site to see by your request for funding.. I will be pleased to hopefully help.

Dear Wikimedia visitor..

Are you tired of receiving messages asking for donations? I am and I did give; five times the $3 request asked for from each visitor to this site. If you are annoyed by the request of financial "support" to this organization, can you imagine what it will be like with pop-ups and ads necessary to maintain the future of Wikimedia, if you do not give the minimal of $3 each?

Please, please, I implore you to reconsider and donate just $3 each, for the pleasure and ease of enjoying the information provided by Wikimedia WITHOUT ads!

Happy holidays and blessings to all. Let us enjoy this site in 2015 without ads and pop-ups!

To Whom it may Concern:

I would love to give a donation to this fine service. However, back in the early days of the formation of Wikipedia, I noticed a man on TV advertising this website. I remember him saying the only people who contribute to this website are "let's face it, rich white men." I take issue with this statement and because of it I will not donate. Ask the rich white men.

Regarding Category talk:Problems donating[edit]

The donation form will not recognize my email address. The email address I submit is correct.

Regarding Talk:Thank You/en[edit]

I wish I could donate more to wikipedia.

What a fine line we walk between fact and subjective nonsense. I would like to thank everyone that does their part with sharing fact/interpretation, which is the catalyst for informing society, the best we can. I fully support disseminating information to the masses.

I wish we do the future a service.

Humble beginnings, RJ[edit]

I took the time to donate to wikipedia using paypal. I'd be way less annoyed in the process if it returned me to wikipedia where your banner ad found me in the first place rather than landing me in wikimediafoundation.

Regarding Category talk:English[edit]

I found a very old interesting postcard. At the top it said Marruecos Tipico so I googled it to see where that is but all the information was in Arabic or French with some very complicated way to get it translated to English which I never did manage to do. Couldn't it be a little easier please?
