Budget breakdown [edit]
- 1115-1700 € for printing 1500 copies (16 pages, 170 g/m², plus cover 300 g/m², all 4+4 colours, saddle stitch binding)
- 50-300 € for shipping
We've contacted several printers in Finland and selected the best price, which appears to be quite high compared to other experiences (even though the number of copies is limited; printing 500, 1000 or 1500 copies costs about the same in good printing quality). Online printers have better prices but may not be able to print in the correct format (as the WMF layout doesn't use A4 but a USA-only format). The printer used by WMIT has the best price (for 1500 copies) and proved quality but doesn't ship directly abroad, so we'd need WMIT or a volunteer in Italy to be invoiced for the service and to ship it. Shipping costs depend on which service is chosen in the end; we've found several good offers for each case but for a detailed price we need to have the material and know its exact size.
The amount requested is for the worst case, but we'll spend as little as possible.
Project scope and list of activities [edit]
- Localise Welcome to Wikipedia in Finland and for a Finnish audience.
- Print as many copies as possible with the provided funding, with a max of 1500.
- Distribute it in libraries and events. We're already in contact with some libraries, while there's not been any specific planning of future events.
Project goal [edit]
The Finnish public library network is robust, enjoys a lot of public support and is staffed by enthusiastic professionals who organize many projects that aim to popularize knowledge. Libraries are a powerful resource for anyone looking to improve Wikipedia articles. We aim to recruit librarians and other staff to work on Wikipedia and help Wiki enthusiasts to locate source material. To this end, the best way to accomplish this is to organize meetings and training sessions where we visit libraries and help everyone there to learn the basic tools of Wikipedia. For libraries that wish to take this cooperation a step further, we're hoping to have them nominate a local Wiki specialist who can be contacted by editors in need of help. This person can be a regular employee or a conscientious objector completing his national service in a library. The introductory booklets would be valuable training material and a convenient way to help get things started.
Non-financial requirements [edit]
- Welcome to Wikipedia layout has already been produced by WMF. Next time, it would be better to have such layouts in ISO 216 formats.
- Some volunteer(s) from WMIT if we decide to order the leaflets from its printer, as it doesn't ship directly abroad (one is available), and possibly the help of the chapter itself to invoice and then reimburse (not asked yet).
Fit to strategy [edit]
The booklets have proven effective to increase reach, understanding and participation in Wikipedia. They can be a way to attract the attention of the public at events, they help reminding what's been said in workshops, they're a good way to get some feedback and they're useful in any case if an interested person reads them.
Other benefits [edit]
The translation and distribution of booklets is a simple and useful task also for wikimedians not very involved in the chapter, who might be involved in this way.
Measures of success [edit]
- Minimum requirement for success (and funding): booklet is localised effectively for the Finnish audience and printed (in good quality).
- Moderate success: 50 % of the copies are distributed within the first year in good quality environment and to interested audiences (such as in libraries).
- Complete success: 100 % of the copies are distributed as above; and at least 10 % as part of specific partnerships or to specific groups of interested persons (such as librarians willing to increase their involvement in Wikimedia projects), or to attendants of workshops organized by us.
