The Wikimedia Foundation wants to provide affordable, high quality merchandise to the project volunteers and the general public to reward its volunteers and spread the Wikimedia and project brands around the world. To that end, we want to build a wide reaching store that is able to provide good value and fast shipping around the world with the help of a worldwide distribution system and potentially project volunteers as project needs arise. The revenues from the store will cover the cost of merchandise and support the Wikimedia Foundation through programmatic events with most of the revenue going towards subsidize merchandise and/or shipping for more expensive locales, as well as to provide free merchandise to worldwide volunteers as a reward and thank you for their service.
The Merchandise Giveaways Program is the primary, ongoing iteration of this initiative, although other projects are in the works.
What is this page for?
Like anything else on Wikimedia projects, we value and hope for feedback from the community to ensure the shop evolves and improves as a project and representation of community pride.
We are always seeking feedback on the process of The Wikimedia Shop, such as:
- What do you like about the current production selection?
- What other products or designs would you like to see offered?
- Is there information missing from product descriptions or FAQs?
- Would you like to see changes made to packaging or automated order/shipping emails?
- Do you feel the quality of goods is acceptable? If not, what would you like to see changed?
- Do you have skills, partnerships, or other suggestions to provide our team?
Every part of the process is malleable at this point and we would like to get the ordering process and product selection as perfected as we possibly can so customers, both within and outside the editing community, can get the same high quality experience they have come to expect from our other Wiki projects.
Call for designs
We want your designs! Go to /Design ideas page to give your ideas. We don't wish to overwhelm customers with too many design options, but we want to be able to keep a constantly fresh variety of products, so we would like ideas from everyone for future products and designs. Product ideas (without specific designs) can go on to the main discussion page for now.
Where is the Wikimedia Shop located?
The store is located at http://shop.wikimedia.org. Please feel free to peruse and perhaps place an order! If you would like to offer your feedback, please let us know on the Discussion page or at merchandisewikimedia.org (logged-in users can also use the email user function for User:VShchepakina (WMF)).
Do you ship outside the U.S.?
YES! We want to make sure that people are able to order from anywhere in the world at a reasonable cost. While we don't yet have a global distribution system in place, we will subsidize international shipping expenses for orders under '5 lbs' of merchandise, in which case customers would pay a maximum of $15 USD in shipping costs. If shipping costs are less than $15 USD, the customer would pay the shipping cost. We decided to cap orders at 5 lbs because this would cover 2 sweatshirts, 2 or 3 T-Shirts and/or other extras, which is the average order for most customers.
For orders weighing more than '5 lbs' and if the products will be used for a Community Event, please contact the Wikimedia Shop Manager, Juli Matthews (User:Jmatthews (WMF)), as we may be able to help with the expense (prior approval is needed).
What about the old CafePress store?
The old CafePress store was a good stop gap but doesn't provide us with a great option to expand globally. It had limited options for merchandise (especially quality wise), took a large percentage of the sales and didn't have a lot of traffic (we got $150-$300 in royalties a month from it). We wanted to have more control and be able to produce higher quality products where we could use our leverage to get much better prices. We also wanted to make sure that we could expand this into a global system. That is always difficult to do given that there are very few good examples to follow (we need to be flexible). CafePress doesn't offer any good option to lower prices and/or make the entire process more affordable for international customers and does not allow us to mix up products beyond their partners.
The old CafePress store is still live for now but we're going to shut it down as soon as we can. We've already extracted all of the original designs from it (especially the community contributed ones) and will make sure they are uploaded to Commons if they weren't already. We will be trying to get a hold of everyone who contributed designs to make sure that's okay. Some of the original apparel ideas were awesome. Bacon number? Yes please.
I see a decent selection of products now, but is there more to come?
We want to keep the store both well-stocked and fresh by periodically offering new products, while also rotating out old products that are not as popular. Right now, we have a few new ideas in the works and are starting to look at the 3rd generation of products and we need your help! Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas on either the talk page or on the Design ideas page.
What products are currently in the works?

We also want to make T-Shirts for other projects as well. While we have some ideas of our own, but we would appreciate feedback from the community. There are many product options we can add to the store, such as baby/toddler apparel, lanyards, flash drives, headgear, totes-- to give you some ideas. We, of course, want to cater to the needs of the community, so send us your feedback and we'll put it to good use!
Who profits from this shop?
100% of the profits from the Wikimedia Shop go to the Wikimedia Foundation. It is not the intended purpose of the Wikimedia Shop to become a Profit center. All proceeds are filtered back into the shop to keep production costs low, subsidize shipping and help to provide merchandise specifically aimed towards community members.
Is the store secure?
Right now, the checkout page is fully secure (through Shopify), but we do not have working HTTPS throughout the rest of the site (including the login page). This is especially an annoyance for people with HttpsEverywhere installed since it will try to force you to an HTTPS connection. That connection (including on the login page) is secure, but will throw a certificate mismatch warning because the certificate and the server identify as myshopify and shopify.com (instead of wikimedia.org).
We are working with Shopify to make sure that this is fixed as soon as possible and we can provide the most secure and comfortable experience and HTTPS throughout the Shop.
For now, we're also in touch with the httpsEverywhere team to add an exemption in the *.wikimedia.org rule for shop.wikimedia.org
Are you working with any third parties ?
Yes, given the enormous logistics involved and limited resources we have, we're working directly with 3 main service providers:
- Social Imprints is a third-party printing and fulfillment company based here in San Francisco who we've worked with for the past 3-4 years when printing merchandise for the staff, Wikipedia 10 and other events. They are a full service custom printer with a unique social mission, to provide higher paying professional jobs to at risk adults. They help manage the fulfillment and shipping of all orders from the Wikimedia Shop.
- Shopify (website) is the online shopping platform that we're using. They provide an easy to use and relatively adaptable platform that services more than 40,000 stores already, including other high traffic stores such as the KONY 2012 campaign and Angry Birds. They have been incredibly excited to work with us and have offered developer resources to adapt the platform to our global needs.
- Swagbot is a Springfield, Missouri based t-shirt company which specializes in unique, custom screen-printed designs. Owner and operator Juli Matthews (JMatthews (WMF)) serves as the day-to-day shop manager, and also produces some of our products in our 2014 line. Juli is also the primary facilitator of the Merchandise Giveaways Program.
Are purchases tax deductible?
All of the purchase price of the item goes directly to funding the cost of the merchandise and the shop overhead, therefore we're not able to provide a tax receipt for any of the purchase.
Can I make a donation on the store?
Not yet, but we are looking into this functionality soon.
Where are your products sourced from?
We only source merchandise from socially responsible businesses with ethical manufacturing practices. Our branded products are manufactured in the United States, China, India, Pakistan, El Salvador, and Guatemala. In addition to our products, we think it would also be of interest for you to know that our fulfillment partner, Social Imprints, is a San Francisco-based employee-owned cooperative that provides professional jobs to at-risk adults in the SF Bay area.
Will my order be delivered without any issues?
We use United States Postal Service (USPS), UPS and DHL for deliveries inside the United States and abroad. All of our shipments leave the United States and will likely spend time in the customs for the country where the shipment arrives. We cannot provide any customs clearance estimates, but in most cases, shipments may spend anywhere from 1 to 3 days in customs.
Why isn't my currency accepted?
Right now, we're able to display our product prices in dozens of global currencies. However, at this time, we are able to process payments in USD only via Paypal. We're working to implement new payment systems, which will allow us to accept, not only different currencies, but also offer of variety of regional payment options.
Are there plans to translate the content on the Shop in other languages?
This has been a topic of much discussion, both in the community through bug reports (see Bug 37797 and Bug 57939) and at the Foundation. We have decided that our goal for the time being is to create a truly professional, well-functioning shop in English, while exploring international functionalities in the near future. The feasibility of undertaking such a large project is dependent on 3 things:
- Finding a fulfillment company that specializes in accurately and affordably delivering packages internationally
- Implementing the capability of processing multiple currencies, and
- Migrating the shop design from a Shopify template to an in-house design that should make it easier to display alternate languages.
All of these projects are currently in infant stages, but are real priorities over the coming years.
We're Wikimedia - Why can't we have our own designs on the store?
Right now, we want to make sure we have a minimum collection of high-quality, durable, and high-value products with the Wikipedia and Wikimedia project marks. We're actively looking at services that would allow small-batch printing of user-submitted designs, and soon we will begin to offer limited-edition user-submitted designs posted on Wikimedia Commons and will be taking user ideas for longer term editions as well (see our Design ideas page). Our normal Trademark policy also allows you to make Wikipedia merchandise for yourself (without selling it) already and we do not plan on changing that.
Announcement: What's the plan for 2014?
We are currently working towards a store that is more hip and fun, while appealing to both logged-in users and community members.
In March 2014, we rolled out two new products:

- 2014 Limited edition Wiki Loves Monuments calendars
Other products to come include:
- Embroidered polos
- Snapback caps
In addition to the beloved Wiki Globe, we will begin thinking outside of the box to introduce fresh design ideas. The majority of our current product selection offers the Wiki Globe, but we feel it's also important to add some variety in the mix. If you would like to provide input on the new designs, please feel free to complete our online survey. As stated above, we will also be working with the WMF Design team to redesign the Shop to migrate the design of the Shop from a Shopify template to an in-house design that should make it easier to display alternate languages.
Finally, we're so thrilled to announce that the Wikimedia Merchandise Giveaways program is alive and well! We are contacting a minimum of 10 nominated users a week and encouraging users to continue to nominate worthy community members.
