Shortcuts
This page is for requests to take over an account name that is already registered. If you want your account renamed to a name that is still available, please use Special:GlobalRenameRequest or Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple.

This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including Stewards) familiar with local usurpation guidelines, can consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames primarily held locally. This consists of renaming an existing account in order to vacate the username and allow another user to take it.

Please note that global accounts whose "home wiki" is another project or which have significant attachments on other projects cannot be usurped here; these requests must be made at meta:Steward requests/Username changes (see meta:Help:Unified login).

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

  • The account you want to usurp must have the English Wikipedia as its "home wiki", i.e. or should be displayed next to the en.wikipedia.org entry for the account at Special:CentralAuth.
  • The account you want to usurp should have no edits or significant log entries to qualify for usurpation (though rare exceptions are made in some circumstances). This includes edits or log actions on other Wikimedia projects. These can be checked through Special:CentralAuth.
  • Please do not request usurpation of another account if your own user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Instructions

  1. Log in to your present account.
    • Please do not leave a talk page message or e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a user familiar with the usurpation process will do so.
  2. Click here to place your request.
    1. Replace "TARGET NAME" with the username you wish to usurp.
    2. Replace "YOUR REASON" with a description of why you want to usurp the account.
    3. Leave the "Subject/headline" field blank.
If the URL above does not work, simply copy the following text, click "edit this page" and paste it at the bottom of the page. Modify it as indicated.

Advanced usage
For requests involving renaming an account other than your logged in account, use this:

For usurp only requests, which leaves your logged in account untouched, set the usurponly parameter to yes:

To add an optional non default signature, use the sig parameter:

  1. Preview the changes and make sure both names are spelled correctly. Click "Publish changes".
  2. Your request is now complete and ready to be processed after the hold period (usually about a week). If the owner of the target account does not object, a global renamer will fulfill your request provided other requirements are met. Do not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Hand to God, I'm NOT yelling. My all caps was intended to simply capture the attention of absolutely anyone who could possibly simplify this process for me. The caps were for emphasis. I still don't even know if I'm doing any of this correctly (communicating in the correct location/in the correct manner). This forum is NOT simple and straightforward for non-coders/novice-users. I started out someplace else and accidentally stumbled into the "usurpertion" thread. This is so freakin' complicated. I thought I would just need to email an administrator and request a change. I know some VERY BASIC html, but this forum/method of communication actually scares the bejesus out of me. All of this extra feels WAY OVER my head. I need this ENTIRE PROCESS dumbed way down, STAT, and I'll be out if everybody's hair. 😭🙇‍♀️

 →In order to typed what I have so far "in response" I simply clicked on the edit "pencil" icon and just started typing. I need more explicit instructions to correctly place a "comment"/reply. None of this makes sense to me, so forgive my frustration. I just want to do A + B and have it = C. In other words, I desperately need just plain language instructions. Somebody, PLEASE HELP! 😭😳😬😟😰😖😔

  • Hi Mstarkrn72 / NurseMomica. I'll have a look at your request in a second. I'm sorry to hear that you found the process confusing, so I hope I can clarify some points.
    • This page is for requesting account usurpations. What this means is this:
      • User A wants to change their username to User B. However, there is already an account with the name User B.
      • In order for User A to change their username to User B, User B needs to be renamed in order to move it out of the way.
      • User A will then need to ask for an usurpation of User B. What this means is that User B will be renamed to something else, such as User C, and then User A can be renamed to User B.
      • Because we are essentially taking User B's username away from them, we have some rules in place. In general, User B needs to be 1) inactive; 2) have made no significant edits to Wikipedia or any other Wikimedia project; and 3) User A needs to be an established user. We must also try to contact User B and give them at least a week to respond.
    • In your request, you mentioned that both accounts, "Mstarkrn72" and "NurseMomica", are both registered to the same email address, meaning that you have access to both accounts. Because you control both "Mstarkrn72" and "NurseMomica", we do not need to ask "NurseMomica" whether or not we can take their username, since you are in control of "NurseMomica" and are requesting the change.
    • In order for us to prove that you are in control of "NurseMomica", we need to ask you to log in to the "NurseMomica" account, and then make an edit confirming that it is indeed your account. In your case, this is how the process would work:
      1. Log in to the "NurseMomica" account.
      2. Return to the usurpations request page (this page), located at <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Changing_username/Usurpations>.
      3. Select Edit next to the "Mstarkrn72 → NurseMomica" section heading.
        The editor will load, allowing you to edit the contents of the page. You will see the wiki markup of the page in a large text box.
      4. Scroll down to the bottom of the large text box, then click on the last line in there.
        This will move the text cursor, which allows you to specify where to enter text, down to the last line.
      5. Press ↵ Enter.
        This will add a new line.
      6. Type the following into the text box: I confirm that I, Mstarkrn72, am in control of this account, and would like to continue with the usurpation. ~~~~.
      7. Select Publish changes.
  • I hope this clarifies some questions you may have. I see that you have logged in as NurseMomica and have made an edit here, so that would satisfy our requirements for verification. I will have a look at this request and finish processing it.

  • "NurseMomica" has been renamed to "NurseMomica (usurped)". Your password for "NurseMomica" will still work on that account.
  • "Mstarkrn72" has been renamed to "NurseMomica". Please log in as "NurseMomica" from now on, using your password from "Mstarkrn72".
Don't forget to keep in mind Wikipedia's policy on using multiple accounts. In short, you may use multiple accounts provided that you make it clear that both accounts are yours. You can easily do this by editing the user pages of both accounts, and then simply mentioning that you have another account, along with a link to that account. Here's an example of how to do it:
  1. Go to User:NurseMomica (usurped).
  2. Select Create in the top-right corner.
    The editor will load, allowing you to change the contents of the page.
  3. In the editor, type: This is an alternate account of [[User:NurseMomica|NurseMomica]].
  4. Select Publish changes.
  5. Go to User:NurseMomica.
  6. Select Create in the top-right corner.
  7. In the editor, type I have an alternate account named [[User:NurseMomica (usurped)|NurseMomica (usurped)]].
  8. Select Publish changes.
