Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Cyberbot I (talk | contribs) at 19:10, 29 December 2023 (Clerking (bot) (Peachy 2.0 (alpha 8))). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

Renamer note: I'm perplexed, you say a sibling edited on your current account, but this account only has one edit, this one, can you clarify? - FlightTime (open channel) 18:31, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I can provide an explanation. Upon reviewing the contribution history of this account, I observed several edits on the Spanish article about the Bolivarian Revolution (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revoluci%C3%B3n_bolivariana). You can find the vandalized version of the article here (https://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Revoluci%C3%B3n_bolivariana&oldid=156459976), where the introduction was written in derogatory language. Similar edits were made to the Spanish Cancel Culture article (https://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cultura_de_la_cancelaci%C3%B3n&diff=cur&oldid=156456993) insulting in uppercase at the end of a pharagraph. While I primarily use Wikipedia for reading articles, I admit to being imprudent in not considering the possibility that my sibling, who is in their mid-teenage years, could access my phone. Bear that I only use wikipedia to read, I'm not familiar with its tools to revert these editions. 181.239.236.249 (talk) 18:54, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk note: Is this a request for courtesy vanishing—meaning you intend never to edit the English Wikipedia again—or are you just wanting to abandon this account? Please note that returning after exercising courtesy vanishing may be met with automatic relinking of the new account with the old one. If you are just interested in retiring, an extended vacation, or are considering a clean start in the future, placing {{retired}} on your user and/or talk page(s) and abandoning the account is the better option. - FlightTime (open channel) 22:00, 28 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I intend to discontinue the use of this account and transition to using Wikipedia solely as a reader without an account. My goal is to avoid a recurrence of the recent situation and its potential consequences. After reading the 'Right to Vanish' page and understanding the process for making a request, I want to clarify my specific intentions: I wish to abandon this account, remove information (particularly my username, as I haven't created a user profile page here as the editors and experienced users have), due to its association with my real name and its potential consequences.
To ensure that I follow the correct procedure for the Vanish request, I think it would be okay to ask a couple of questions. First, should I submit the Vanish request here in the comments (how would the procedure)? Second, regarding the {{retired}} tag, should I place it on both the user profile and talk page, or is it sufficient to add it to just one of them?
I'm seeking this clarification to ensure that my Vanish request is processed accurately. My aim is to close this account and transition to being a reader only - without a new account to be precise too. I appreciate your understanding, considering my novice status in navigating this process. Additionally, I habitually check forums for extra details. Thank you for your time and patience! (Sorry for the grammar errors, English ins't my native language.) Ludoxei (talk) 01:06, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Dicloniusreaper: No need to rename, just stop using the account, since you only have one edit on this account (this one) reset the password to something random and there you go. - FlightTime (open channel) 01:02, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
