Description - Call for registration for Wikimania 2023. Requesting to run the banner early and for a longer duration than the previous two years as there is also the in-person registration in addition to the online registration. The early call to action is so that editors can be made aware of the conference, if they are not aware yet, and decide to attend in person. The ticketing platform will be opened 22nd June, if there's no hiccups on the platform. The inperson and/or online registration may close by 16 August before the conference starts.

Metrics - Number of event registration

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?[edit]

Discussion[edit]

This request is made as a Core Organising Team member of Wikimania 2023. Robertsky (talk) 19:36, 16 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Do note that the start date has shifted to 27 June. Robertsky (talk) 00:23, 20 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Ciell, due to delays in the set up on the event registration platform, the banner should be pushed back to 29 June (and may still change. We are in daily communications with the platform). Also, as with what Elena says, is it possible to make use of the WLLH Singapore's banner setup? Thanks for working on this. Robertsky (talk) 13:19, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Robertsky: no problem, I think I am around online most of the days. Let me know ~24 hours in advance when the banner should go live (please ping in case I am not working on Meta.) Ciell (talk) 15:34, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell fyi, platform is not ready yet. Please hold publish of the banner until registration site is ready. Thank you. Robertsky (talk) 20:32, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Robertsky: no rush from my end, the campaign has not been set to enabled yet. I'm planning on doing that manually after you give me the go.
We all like to have a good working registration process, so take your time. ;-) Ciell (talk) 20:52, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell, the registration page is considered as soft launched. The banner can go live no earlier than 6 July, 00:00UTC... Just in case of unforeseen catastrophic bugs. :) Robertsky (talk) 14:06, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, thanks @Robertsky Ciell (talk) 15:02, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have a suggestion regarding the text of the banner: The banner is supposed to make people aware of Wikimania who don't know about it yet, isn't it? In addition to the year, I would always include the exact date in the announcement. That saves searching. Best, Wnme (talk) 19:45, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Wnme, thanks for the suggestion! @ELappen (WMF), do you think it is possible to change the second line to include the dates, i.e. "Happening 16–19 August 2023, register now to attend in person or online"? Robertsky (talk) 08:12, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure @Robertsky, happy for that to be updated. "Happening August 16-19. Register now to attend in person or online." Does that work? If so feel free to update! --ELappen (WMF) (talk) 16:35, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell, can you help update the banner with the above text? Thank you. :) Robertsky (talk) 17:06, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Updated the text - but please realize this does mean that the 60+ translations we received from the community in the past 36 hours and are already live will not include this update unless we proactively ask people to renew these translations. Also, fyi @ELappen (WMF):, banner is currently offline for maintenance: see below. Ciell (talk) 18:25, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I informed via wikimedia-mailinglist about the new translations. Wnme (talk) 19:41, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

Hi @Robertsky, thanks for the request. A preview of your banner is now here, the banner and campaign can be found here and here. For next time, to you and @Gunarta (WMID): our banners are coded from the server side and don't use wikicode, but html/css/js - see CentralNotice/FAQ#Which_information_will_I_need_to_provide?. The banner preview looks a bit different from the one you linked though I tried to stay true to your design where possible. I hope that's okay.
Please let me know if the banner is good to go like this, or if things need to be changed still - happy to take in your feedback. Ciell (talk) 13:06, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Ciell: thank you so much for your work on this!! This banner is heavily based on the design for the Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Singapore banner. I'm wondering if we can pull the border and font/font color from that design? Otherwise it looks great! Thanks again ELappen (WMF) (talk) 12:40, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @ELappen (WMF)! It would have been be very helpful to have that link in the request, haha.
Okay, so what about this one: preview? Ciell (talk) 15:33, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(Oh: banner preview function is buggy at the moment: some WM user scripts are blocking the banner-preview to show at the moment. This will not happen when the banner is live, it's related to the preview link.) Ciell (talk) 15:37, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is perfect, huge thanks again @Ciell:!! And sorry for not linking--we submitted around the same time and I think we were under the assumption that the same CN admin would do the implementation (obviously not a fair assumption!). :) Really appreciate your work on this! --ELappen (WMF) (talk) 18:10, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect @ELappen (WMF), and you're welcome!
I'll wait for Robert to give me a sign to enable the banner later this week. Ciell (talk) 18:27, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and @ELappen (WMF): though the banner is not live yet, people can start working on the translations of the banner already. :-) Ciell (talk) 19:45, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Robertsky is on it with the translations :) --ELappen (WMF) (talk) 11:45, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Robertsky: since there is a bug that requires me to push all banner translations to live manually (and I have three banners at the moment I need to do this for), it would be great to get in some early translations. Would you mind if I share the translation link in the Wikimania ProgComm telegram channel so they can help you/us get started? The text is final, correct? Ciell (talk) 07:48, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell, yes. let's do it. :) Robertsky (talk) 08:35, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done, thanks Robert! Ciell (talk) 09:13, 28 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Robertsky: Because of the problem in the registration service, and also now a reported problem with the mobile view of the banner, I have disabled it for now so we can fix everything and make a fresh start tomorrow.
The comment about the banner misbehaving was the following: Due to the "Wikimania Singapore" logo being so wide, this banner looks terrible on mobile phones, resulting in about 50% of viewport height covered by the banner with text overflowing to the right. Here is a screenshot from the Polish version. Would it be possible to scale down the logo or reflow the content so that the logo is above the text on mobile? (For example with use of display: flex; flex-direction: column;).
I assume you tested the banner before it went live, also since the source code of the banner was copied from the Living Heritage one, so also pinging @DerHexer: for ideas and fixes. Ciell (talk) 18:12, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The linked screenshot comes from Microsoft Edge on Android on wmpl: wiki, however I've observed a similar effect in mobile Firefox (and not only on that wiki). Msz2001 (talk) 18:24, 7 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Msz2001, I've taken your suggestion but also lowered the value for the image in general. Could you test the result on your device for me, does this make a difference? Ciell (talk) 09:48, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell It's much better now. Thanks. (Here is a screenshot of the corrected banner on the same site and device as in the original report). Msz2001 (talk) 10:08, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks! Ciell (talk) 12:22, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Banner is enabled again. Ciell (talk) 16:46, 8 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have lowered impressions from now until the event to one set of impressions/7 days as a reminder. Ciell (talk) 12:28, 17 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
