Grant Proposal[edit]

M. Please state the title of your proposal. This will also be the Meta-Wiki page title.

WikiClimateCampusTourNigeria

1. What is the change that you are trying to bring about and why is this important.

Climate change has had significant impacts on Nigeria since the 1980s, including rising temperatures, variable rainfall, sea level rise, flooding, drought, desertification, land degradation, and losses in biodiversity and freshwater resources. A UN report highlights that Nigeria, with its dependence on agriculture and fisheries, is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. As a result, 34 out of 36 states in Nigeria are facing severe flooding that has displaced 1.4 million people. However, the representation of Nigeria's context on climate change-related topics on Wikipedia and Wikidata is limited. An analysis of Climate change in Nigeria using Wiki Nav found that there is low readability on these topics, with only 0.11% of views on biodiversity loss, 2.95% on the 2022 Nigerian floods, and 0.79% on the geography of Nigeria. Furthermore, a report by Okojie in 2019 found that many Nigerian youths lack an understanding of climate science and global warming, despite the negative impact of climate change on the ecosystem. To bridge this gap, the project aims to incorporate climate change literacy into Nigeria's educational system to increase understanding of these issues among young people and stimulate innovations to address climate risks. This will lead to a higher rate of youth involvement in climate change advocacy, bridge the existing content gap on Wikipedia and Wikidata, and increase the number of well-informed students actively engaged in climate action and stakeholder engagement in their communities. The Nigerian youth population, which is the world's largest with a median age of 18.1 years and approximately 70% of the population under 30 and 42% under the age of 15, is a valuable investment for the future and will be a key focus of this project.

2. Describe your main approaches or strategies to achieve these changes and why you think they will be effective.

Mobilizing and sensitizing undergraduate and postgraduate Nigerian youths on the open climate in Nigeria. Building a sustainable open climate Wikimedia Fan Club Communities in Nigeria. Generating diverse content and prioritising environmental issues/climate change topics relevant to Nigeria.

3. What are the activities you will be developing and delivering as part of these approaches or strategies?

Strategy 1: Mobilizing and sensitizing undergraduate Nigerian youths on an open climate. The project aims to educate youth in selected universities (University of Ilorin, Federal University Kashere, University of Port Harcourt, University of Ibadan, Kwara State University Malete, and the University of Benin) on climate and environmental issues through outreach and advocacy visits. This will be done with the help of the Ministry of Environment and aligned NGOs and institutions.

Strategy 2: Building a sustainable open climate Wikimedia Fan Club Community. The project will work with selected leaders and stakeholders to recruit participants, host roundtable discussions, and promote youth engagement and understanding of the intersection between environmental issues, climate actions, and the Wikimedia movement. The project will also increase awareness of Wikimedia projects and research on climate change in Nigeria.

Strategy 3: Generating diverse content.

  • Data-a-thons: A series of training/data-a-thons will be held to introduce participants to Wikidata and track items related to climate change in Nigeria. The aim is to identify gaps in the available data and create a worklist to prioritize environmental issues and climate change topics relevant to Nigeria. The data collected will be used to identify areas where new Wikipedia articles are needed or expand existing ones by adding more information to the corresponding items.
  • Edit-a-thons: Edit-a-thons will be held to train students in minor edits related to climate change topics in Nigeria. A documentation page has been created for easy access.
  • Write-a-thons: Experienced Students Wikimedians and young climate experts will write and review climate-related content for Wikipedia. A Refresher writing workshop will be held with at least 10 experienced Wikimedians on creating articles and their contributions will be incentivized and rewarded.
4. Are your activities part of a Wikimedia movement campaign or event? If so, please select the relevant campaign below. If so, please select all the relevant campaigns from the list below. If "other", please state which.

Not applicable

5. Do you have the team that is needed to implement this proposal?

Bukky658 (Project Lead and Facilitator) - Certified Organiser, Wikimedia Organisers' Lab focused on Climate Change and Sustainability. I will perform the managerial/executive role, Develop a strategic plan, carry out stakeholder analysis, and Coordinate Fan Club Leaders community engagements.

Omorodion1 (Co-Lead and Facilitator) - Certified Organiser for Wikimedia Organisers' Lab focused on Climate Change and Sustainability. He will perform the managerial role for the tasks detailed below and in the grant detail, Develop a strategic plan, carries out stakeholder analysis, spearheads new community engagements, and lead training sessions.

Tesleemah (Program Coordinator and Facilitator) - Certified Organiser, Wikimedia Organisers' Lab focused on Climate Change and Sustainability. She will coordinate the implementation of the train-the-trainer approach that will be employed in this campaign for Fan Club leaders and monitor their assigned roles and responsibilities.

James Moore (Fan Club Coordinator 1, University of Ilorin) - President of Wikimedia Fan Club at University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. Ugwulebo (Fan Club Coordinator 2, University of Port Harcourt) - co-founder of Port Harcourt Wikimedia Hub.

Ibjaja055 (Fan Club Coordinator 3, Federal University of Kashere) - the Federal University of Kashere.

John Joy (Fan Club Coordinator 4, University of Ibadan) - Wikimedia Fan Club leader at the University of Ibadan.

Linason Blessing (Fan Club Coordinator 5, Kwara State University Malete) - Executive KWASU Wiki Fan Club.

Nosakhare Okuons (Fan Club Coordinator 6, University of Benin) - Coordinator of Wikimedia Community at the University of Benin.

The selected fan club leaders will be trained and provided with resources to guide the implementation of the campaign. This will include providing them with details about the campaign and organising online capacity building on the different activities to be carried out in each fan club so as to equip them with the necessary skills required as local organisers that will coordinate campaigns in their various Fan Clubs. There will also be regular virtual meet-ups of all fan club leaders and project coordinators to keep track of the project implementation plan and progress report project whilst addressing any possible challenge.

Given that the project will adopt the train-the-trainer model, the trained fan club leaders will be supported by the project coordinators to train and mentor members of the fan club participating in the project. The training will be done during in-person meet-ups and virtual training sessions with support from the Project coordinators.

This will ensure a smooth knowledge transfer from the project coordinators to the fan club leaders to the participants.

6. Please state if your proposal aims to work to bridge any of the identified CONTENT knowledge gaps (Knowledge Inequity)? Select up to THREE that most apply to your work.

Geography, Other global topics for impact (topics considered to be of global importance), Cultural background, ethnicity, religion, racial

6.1 In a few sentences, explain how your work is specifically addressing this content gap (or Knowledge inequity) to ensure a greater representation of knowledge.

This work will invest in students to develop the abilities needed to prioritise bridging the content gap by creating, expanding, and updating articles about climate-related topics in Nigeria while documenting them on English Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikicommons to promote knowledge equity in line with the Wikimedia movement's strategic direction. Climate change and sustainability is a topic of content deemed to be especially impactful to readers in context, quality and quantity.

7. Will your work focus on involving participants from any underrepresented communities?

Gender Identity, Geographic , Ethnic/racial/religious or cultural background, Socioeconomic status, Age, Digital Access

8. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities?

This campaign focuses on engaging new and existing Wikimedia fan club members from selected tertiary institutions including the University of Ilorin, the Federal University Kashere, the University of Port Harcourt, the University of Ibadan, Kwara State University Malete, and the University of Benin. To be eligible, participants must be registered fan club members with a passion for promoting open access to information, climate literacy, and environmental sustainability. The target participants are students (youth) selected based on various factors such as age, digital access, and gender identity.

The selected fan club leaders will be trained and provided with resources to guide the implementation of the campaign. Awareness will be created through visits to selected institutions, meetings with young climate activists, and promoting the project on social media. The call for participation will be made through the fan club's social media platforms using e-posters and banners. Participants will be trained on contributing to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and WikiCommons to bridge climate-related topics content gaps. The training will consist of two physical and two online training/editing sessions.

The project aims to sustain itself by recruiting new participants to the existing fan club groups and updating them about related climate change and sustainability Wikimedia campaigns/programs. All participants will be added to messaging channels and mailing lists for follow-up and updates. We hope to establish a network of climate champions within the fan clubs so they can leverage Wikimedia projects to provide local expert knowledge around the subject matter. Through this network, the champions can be mentored and trained more on Climate science so they can engage in other climate action. This will help ensure sustainable engagement with the topic area.

9. In what ways are you actively seeking to contribute towards creating a safer, supportive, more equitable environment for participants?

The General friendly space policy for Wikimedia events will be summarised and read at the beginning of each event. In addendum, we will make the following 24 hours phone numbers available throughout the events; The organisers, Local venue security, Local law enforcement, Local sexual assault hotline, Local emergency and non-emergency medical services, and Local taxi company will be available.

10. Please tell us about how you have let your Wikimedia communities know about the planned activities and this proposal. Use this space to describe the processes you carried out to make the community more involved in planning this proposal. Please link the on-wiki community discussion(s) around the proposals.

I have informed the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria via their project notification metapage to get their suggestions and inputs.

11. Are you aware of other Organiser Lab proposals in your local group, community, or region that are being submitted and that align with your proposed project?

Yes

If yes:

11.1 Did you explore the possibility of doing a joint proposal with other leaders in your group?
Yes
11.2 How will this joint proposal allow you to have better results?
A joint proposal with fellow Organisers in training will enhance teamwork, and increase skills and collaboration on topics of impact. It will ensure new learnings, shared ideas, increased productivity and project output.
12. Will you be working with other external, non-Wikimedia partners to implement this proposal? Required.

Yes

12.1 Please describe these partnerships and what motivates the potential partner to be part of the proposal and how they add value to your work.

Yes, the potential partners for this WikiClimateCampusTour in Nigeria include; National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), National Agency for the Great Green Wall, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), National Environmental Standards Regulatory and Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Tertiary institutions in Nigeria, and Youth-led Climate Change clubs/groups within and outside the institutions. The organisers have reached out to these agencies/organisations and are hopeful this will result in a fruitful collaboration given that this partnership is crucial for increased participation and project recognition at the National and State levels through advocacy, mobilisation, and communication. It will enable access to accurate information materials from the various organisations' libraries' collections and their online databases for the campaign.

Learning, Sharing, and Evaluation[edit]

13. What do you hope to learn from your work in this fund proposal?

What types of support and activities are most interesting to participants in the Campaign and the Community barriers? How many are already engaging in the community using different channels - training, events, and communications? How can we prioritise skills, and community engagement to improve editor contributions on the topic of impact, and sustain new editors? Did the Fan Club organiser develop the required skills and have the time and motivation needed to continue to facilitate the campaign in their community? Do the Wiki Fan Club organisers feel empowered and supported to monitor the contributions of participants? What form of training and support was most/less useful in gaining these skills for new Wikimedians? Did they continue to edit after the events and what motivated them?
