Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented.

This project was implemented by Hausa Wikimedians User Group through the activities and approaches described below. These are broadly grouped into four areas: (i) content creation and capacity building, (ii) Community building and reducing barriers for participation (iii) Increasing participation and engagement, and (iv) Increasing retention rate. Our activities have touched on all these components and this resulted in creation of over 4,000 articles and additional 10,000 were also improved on Hausa Wikipedia. Over 1,000 images were uploaded on Commons and additional 4,000+ articles that were improved with media-files through contest programs.

In content creation, we have organized more than dozen in-person article editing programs collectively with attendance from over 250 editors and created more than 4000 articles. Substantial number of them also were improved in copyediting drives to increase the quality of existing articles.

In increasing participation, engagement and media component, we have participated in two international contests with great results. Both contests were preceded by in-person and virtual training which helped in increasing participation because the training provided a needed support and helped editors to more clearly understand how easy and rewarding it is to participate in the programs.

We used the pre-contest training approach to provide editors with one-on-one support in addition to dedicated contest information pages tailored to our community participation and members' needs.

In building capacity, representation and increasing the pool of skilled trainers and facilitators, we have made significant progress. We organized six sessions; one every other month, dedicated for expert editors and prospective Wikimedia trainers and for the first time we have welcomed a female expert editor into the core organizer group that supports the train-the-trainer program. We have also made careful consideration in expanding female participation in all our organized events and Data Support programs.

Our Volunteer Data Support program provided data support to 60 beneficiaries as proposed.

We have worked in collaboration with two universities to raise awareness of Hausa Wikipedia to undergraduate students through in-campus editing workshops to support continuity and growth of Wikimedia activities in university campuses.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals?

Our monthly in-person editathon approach, in addition to virtual ones, was very effective and helped greatly in developing our community and shared sense of belonging.

Our campaign and contest strategies also worked in improving participation and quality of contribution to international contests from our community compared to data obtained for previous years participation.

The approach of using onwiki public request form for Data Support programs also proved very effective, transparent and easy to use as intended audience are already familiar with wikitext editing. The approach simplified the program implementation as opposed to using an entirely new external system.

3. Would you say that your project had any innovations? Are there things that you did very differently than you have seen them done by others?

Yes. Volunteer Data Support program was a new idea developed through learning needs of our community during the research phase for submitting the project proposal. We found there is a need for it and we modeled it based on these findings and it proved very effective.

4. Please describe how different communities participated and/or were informed about your work.

We use our website and various social media channels which have growing followings and user engagement for announcements and invitation to our programs. We did also use our existing personal and organizational network to reach out to schools, mission-aligned organizations and other cultural institutions for collaboration to spread our mission, expand reach and draw potential editors and Wikimedia contributors.

For members, we primarily use the community Whatsapp channel for all announcements as well as our mailing list. We also engage and recruit students and teachers who are non-Wikimedians through written invitations and social media posts.

For the Volunteer Data support program, we will local project pages on Hausa Wikipedia to increase participation and for transparency. We also shared a detailed summary of our full year work on Meta-wiki.

5. Documentation of your impact. Please use the two spaces below to share files and links that help tell your story and impact. This can be documentation that shows your results through testimonies, videos, sound files, images (photos and infographics, etc.) social media posts, dashboards, etc.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

8. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

9. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities?

  • We faced intermittent challenges with IP Blocking which inhibits account creation and editing. This is a recurring problem in almost all our editing programs and it significantly interferes with the process of account creation. Our programs often are situated in different locations and involve a large number of newcomers who would need to create new accounts.
  • We are not able to provide Data Support to all deserving applicants because of reduction in the budget allocation for the program. The programs seemed very effective in the limited form its implemented,
  • To support functioning of Wiki clubs with partner university our user group needs to be able to provide some level of funding at the initial stage of the project before the club mature and be able to source for funding from Wikimedia or other external sources indepedently. During this project implementation we were not able to do that and affected progress of wiki clubs formation in campuses.
  • In some of our programs where there are a majority of newcomers involved, like workshops in universities it's often difficult to enroll editors in Outreach Dashboard partly due to the inability to create the account in the first place during the event because of the aforementioned IP block issue.

10. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

11. If you were sitting with a friend to tell them one thing about your work during this fund, what would it be (think of inspiring or fascinating moments, tough challenges, interesting anecdotes, or anything that feels important to you)?

12. Please share resources that would be useful to share with other Wikimedia organizations so that they can learn from, adapt or build upon your work. For instance, guides, training material, presentations, work processes, or any other material the team has created to document and transfer knowledge about your work and can be useful for others. Please share any specific resources that you are creating, adapting/contextualizing in ways that are unique to your context (i.e. training material).
