Part 1 Understanding your work[edit]

1. Briefly describe how your proposed activities and strategies were implemented

We are deeply grateful for WMF Program Officer & grants admin for generous support of our project. We sincerely appreciate the trust you've placed in us. Your commitment to our cause has been instrumental in our success. We organized a training and awareness workshop for the new and existing participants. Training workshop was of two days and held on 20-21th January, 2024 at Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan. The participants were introduced to Wikipedia and its sister projects specially Wikimedia Commons, the photography contest Wikiloves Folklore and they were given training and information about how to upload media files on Wikimedia Commons and how to give the proper Creative Commons licensing and how to participate in this photography contest and what type of photographs and other media files they can upload in the contest. Besides this, the participants also learned about the Feminism and Folklore article writing contest on the Sindhi Wikipedia. The participants also learned about how to create new or improve the existing articles on Wikipedia and how to embed their links on Wikidata. We also organized a photo-walk for the participants and visited Sindh Museum, Hyderabad; where the participants took photographs of the folk culture.

2. Were there any strategies or approaches that you felt were effective in achieving your goals? Please describe these strategies and approaches.

Yes, the strategy and approach was to reach out to all those folk who are interested in photography and sharing their culture with the world. Before the actual event of Wiki Loves Folklore started; we started the campaign on social media to share the information about the Wiki Loves Folklore and to reach out to the potential participants and to promote the competition. Hashtags were included into the social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, X (Twitter), WhatsApp Channel) posts to conveniently reach all the relevant posts about our event. Awareness articles about the Competition were also written by JogiAsad and other fellows in the national and regional newspapers and magazines and the organizer appeared in the regional TV Show to mobilize the people to share their intangible heritage with the world through this contest. We also encouraged people to participate in this contest to share their folk culture and intangible heritage photographs with the world through this competition on Wikimedia Commons and provided guidance. These strategies and approaches effectively helped us to achieve our goals.

3. Please use this space to upload media and other files that help tell your story and impact.

4. To what extent do you agree with the following statements regarding the work carried out with the support of this Fund? You can choose “not applicable” if your work does not relate to these goals.

Our efforts during the Fund period have helped to...
A. Bring in participants from underrepresented groups Strongly agree
B. Create a more inclusive and connected culture in our community Strongly agree
C. Develop content about underrepresented topics/groups Strongly agree
D. Develop content from underrepresented perspectives Agree
E. Encourage the retention of editors Agree
F. Encourage the retention of organizers Agree

5. Is there anything else you would like to share about how your efforts helped to bring in participants and/or build out content, particularly for underrepresented groups?

Woman often are underrepresented on Wikipedia, So we focused to bring more woman to the Wikimedia movement and reached out to the potential participants of the underrepresented groups specially women and we shared information, advertising posts to the Sindh Sartiyun (Women of Sindh) group and collaborated with them to spread the word and encouraged them to participate in this contest now and in future as well. Soon after the awareness and training workshop we created a WhatsApp group for the participants with the intention to help them out with uploading files and providing guidance during and after the contest ends. We'd also created a WhatsApp channel to share updates and guidance to the participants and other people who might be interested in the Wikimedia movement. Providing resources: We provided the participants with resources, guidance material and tutorials to help them to participate in the contest. This helped them understanding how to contribute and actively participate in the Wikimedia movement. We created a diversified environment where people of diverse background and communities were invited to a photowalk. We distributed participants certificates to the training workshop participants to recognize their active participation in the workshop and to encourage them to actively participate in the contest and to share their intangible cultural heritage with the rest of the world through this contest.

Part 2: Your main learning[edit]

6. In your application, you outlined your learning priorities. What did you learn about these areas during this period?

I learned that the students of various colleges and universities are more interested to learn and get knowledge about such photography events and other online resources. Various people of Sindhi and Urdu communities expressed their keen interest to participate in the workshop and a photowalk, but few of them physically came to attend the workshop and a photowalk. The participants of the training workshop complained about the trouble in accessing the Wikimedia Commons website and the link to the contest page. The Wikimedia Commons website is partially blocked in Pakistan for more than 2+years, hence making it difficult for the Wikimedians and other people to access the Wikimedia Commons website. In the training workshop, the participants learned how to create a Wikipedia account and how to contribute and about the Feminism and Folklore Contest. Newbies were given guidance to creating, editing and participating in such writing contests in the Wikipedia and they were assigned tasks . We learned that the people needs proper guidance, resources and incentives to engage them in such competitions. We also learned that the people needs proper guidance and skills in photography, media uploading and article writing and importance of networking and need of collaboration with other local cultural organisations and other communities participants and sharing the skills and knowledge with the other members of the Pakistani Wikimedia communities.

7. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences?

Yes, the participants unexpectedly faced technical trouble such as IP blocks while using a VPN resulting unease and difficulty in submitting their entries in the photography contest and difficulties in accessing the Wikimedia Commons website in Pakistan. They inquired us about the problem and we ensured them that we are constantly working and are in contact with the technical team at Phabricator to resolve the problem as soon as possible. As earlier we have reported the problem on the Wikimedia Phabricator. But we learned that the Wikimedia Commons website is partially blocked in Pakistan, meanwhile the Wikipedia and other sister projects of Wikipedia are properly accessible in Pakistan except Wikimedia Commons. Whereas, some of the people who registered themselves for the training workshop were reminded through the phone calls and emails but they didn't attended the workshop. it might be due to their own personal choice or problems.

8. How do you hope to use this learning? For instance, do you have any new priorities, ideas for activities, or goals for the future?

We hope to use these learning to plan the future activities and achieve further more goals. We'll prioritize the inculsion of Pakistani woman and their participation in the Wikimedia movement. Train them with required skills and knowledge; for this we'll discuss and reach out to the cultural and woman organizations working in Pakistan to promote the cultural heritage of Pakistan. We're in a discussion with our community to plan a regional wiki conference in Pakistan and also get help and resources from the culture department of the government to facilitate us with their hostels, conference hall etc. for our regional wiki conference in the future. Our next move is to mobilize the students and faculty of the universities and other cultural organisations to collaborate with us.

9. Documentation of resources: Use this space to upload any documents that would be useful to share with others (e.g. communications material, training material, presentations).

12. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? This could include things like a lack of time or resources, or the expertise in your team to collect this data. It could also include difficulties with particular data collection tools.

Yes

12a. State what difficulties you had.

We don't have access to the proper tool to evaluate the metrics/statistics of the participants and the total number of Participants who uploaded the images. We faced difficultly to collect the data and also we had a less resources. including the light problems and the network problem.

12b. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges?

Difficulties in accessing the Wikimedia Commons website, due to partial blockage of Wikimedia Commons website in Pakistan. We don't have access to evaluating tools. So we recommend WMF to develop or share such tools for better evaluating the data and request WMF to technically support us addressing these challenges. We'll overcome these challenges in future with the proper evaluation and statistics.

13. Use this space to upload any documents and provide links to any tools you have used that would be useful to understand your data collection (e.g., surveys you have carried out, communications material, training material, program and event dashboard link, project page on Meta).
