Project Goal[edit]

What will be the outputs of your project and how will those outputs contribute to advancing a specific Movement Strategy Initiative

Our community Wiki for Senior Citizens Network is a new community of senior citizens. Many of our members wish to participate in several projects of Wikipedia but do not have the capacity, our challenges are unique as senior citizens. We are not able to move at the pace of most other Wikipedians, we may not be very used to online meetings, we are not quite digital like the younger ones but we have diverse experience, we have the zeal and time to participate. We feel underrepresented and left out. This project will enable us improve our work and our ability to contribute. It will provide members the opportunity to discuss and understand movement strategy, the different initiatives including in our native languages, how best members can contribute and how members can seek support for their work including applying for wikpedia grants. Members will be taught and guided through the process. To carryout our work, we rely on the volunteer effort of members. However, because many of our members are retires, there is a limit to what they can volunteer. This project will fill this gap and provide the needed resources for fuller participation

Initiative 2. Funding for underrepresented communities Our Network is a young one. More specifically, our Network is the only community of senior citizens that we know in Africa. Senior Citizens have their peculiar skill challenges as different from other group of Wikipedians that have mostly youths and more active persons. From our experience in some programmes, we know that we may not work fast like others. We also do not catch up with digital skills as quickly as the younger ones. So we need more time to work together mostly offline. We are left out but wish to contribute and be heard. This project will enable us fund our activities, learn more about movement strategy, learn more about contributing and editing, learn how to source for funds including Wikipedia grants and most importantly increase the sustainability of member of our community and the Wikipedia movement

We intend to start in 18 November 2023 and end in 24 February 2024
Where will your project activities be happening?
The project will take place in Nigeria. The in person meet up will take place in Abuja, Nigeria' There will also be online sessions on Zoom
Are you collaborating with other communities or affiliates on this project? Please provide details of how partners intend to work together to achieve the project goal.
  • Oby Ezeilo will be leading on this project, and collaborating with others to deliver on some aspects of the project, with the following roles:
  • Coordinator: Oby Ezeilo I’ll be responsible for the major activities of the project, including writing the grants report, and coordinating between the other collaborators.
  • Translators: Community members will be supported to translate Movement Strategy pages to our languages including Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba. While we have Community members who are experienced in writing these languages, we will be collaborate with language communities to translate. The Coordinator of this project, Oby Ezeilo, is a founding member of Igbo Wikimedian User Group. She is also a specialist in Igbo literature. We will also collaborate with members of Hausa Wikimedian User Group and Yoruba Wikimedian User Group. Members of these language community will mentor our members in carrying out these translations.
  • Outreach & awareness: Another community member will distribute the translated documents to introduce our community to Movement Strategy and to the implementation grants.
  • Trainers: Oby Ezeilo will lead the discussions on movement Strategy. She will be supported by other members of the community and members of the Igbo Wikimedian User Group and Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. Another member of either the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria or Igbo Wikimedian User Group, with financial and project experience, will lead the discussion on applying for grant and support our community volunteers in applying for their own Movement Strategy implementation grants.
What specific challenge will your project be aiming to solve? And what opportunities do you plan to take advantage of to solve the problem?
No awareness of Movement Strategy. There are many within the community who have not joined in discussions previously. This means that many are not aware of the opportunities that MS brings. For example, the discussions regarding hubs, skills development, and increasing awareness of the movement are all important for many within the community. Yet they have not actively engaged in these discussions.
No awareness of what Movement Strategy Grants are about. Movement Strategy grants are not very visible within the community. Many do not know about MSIG. They might have read the call to apply for grants, but do not understand what it is about.
Language barriers prevent people from engaging in MS and MSIG. Communications with the community happen mostly in English. This increases the awareness problem and reduces the ability of people within the community to take advantage of the opportunities that MSIG provides.
Does this project aim to apply one of the examples shared in the call for grants and if so which one?
We will be using the example as provided in Grants:MSIG/Community_Engagement_Package#Project_Goal However, we have modified it by simplifying it a bit and expanding the area of the survey.

Project Activities[edit]

What specific activities will be carried out during this project? Please describe the specific activities that will be carried out during this project.
  • Survey. We will use individual outreach, a meeting and social media outreach to talk with our community members. The goal is to understand their current level of knowledge of Movement Strategy and its grants, and how we can support them to engage more.
  • Translations. We will translate specific Movement Strategy documents and materials into Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba languages to engage the community. This material, including Meta pages, are materials that would help our community fully understand the concept and process of Movement Strategy and Movement Charter. Also, to be translated are Movement Strategy documents and meta pages related to hubs, skills and leadership development, and funding for underrepresented communities including, but not limited to:

  • Movement_Strategy/Initiatives/Global_Approach_for_Local_Skill_Development

  • Community engagement. There will be in-person sessions where our community members will meet in Abuja and we will discuss the progress that has been made in Movement Strategy to-date. Those conversations will inform people about the Recommendations and Initiatives. It will also prepare members to contribute in the on going discussions. For members who are not living within Abuja and environs, we will also hold several online sessions as may be agreed to hold the same discussion. There will be a total of 3 in-person community engagement for this purpose
  • Learning sessions. We will engage community members based on the specific support needs identified through the initial engagement (survey). For example: specific support may be needed in coming up with grant ideas, which is one of the resources listed above that we can adapt.
  • Grants applications training. For those who are ready to transform their ideas into full projects and proposals, there will be one in-person and two online trainings to discuss all the rules and procedure for grant application in Wikipedia and to help them in applying for funding from the implementation grants.
  • Summary: There will be a total of 5 in-person events. The 1st one will be to carry out the survey. Thereafter, there will be 3 in-person events for community engagement on the Movement Strategy conversation. Finally, there will be a last in-person event for training of interested members on grant application. We chose in-person events because senior citizens as not very conversant with the digital environment. Many are just learning to work in the online environment and will not do well learning online. Again, many seniors learn slowly and have to be taught in the traditional teaching environment that they are used to which is physical discussion with participants and preferably in their languages. But once they pick it up, they are happy and eager to implement. However, some members of the community are not living in Abuja and environs. Some are living in different states of the federation. For those members, we can only do online sessions with them. We will do several online sessions at different days and time as will be agreed.
How do you intend to keep communities updated on the progress and outcomes of the project? Please add the names or usernames of these individuals responsible for updating the community
Community members have already been informed about this our application through our WhatsApp group. We mostly share information in our WhatsApp group. Timely direct and personalized messages will also be sent to individuals to attend the different days of the project as we always do in our community. The link to the grant application will be shared with community members to review. They will also be shared with other regions for endorsement. We will continue to share the progress in our social media. We will inform members when this is approved in our social media and in our different meetings. Members will adequately be informed of all the stages of the project. They will also be informed in good time before we hold the in-person sessions. We will also be providing data to participants so that they can always access Wikimedia platforms. We will also use every available opportunity like our different informal meetings to communication any available updates. Individuals responsible for updating members include: Oby Ezeilo who is the project lead and Adankong who is in charge of communication in the project
Who will be responsible for delivering on this project and what are their roles and responsibilities?
  • Coordinator: Oby Ezeilo will be responsible for organising the project including the community engagement programmes. She will be supported by other experienced wikipedian from Igbo Wikipedian User Group and Wikipedian User Group Nigeria. She will also be responsible for writing the grants report, and coordinating between the other collaborators.
  • Translators: there will be translation to 3 languages namely Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba because the Community have experienced people from these languages who will also appreciate the conversation better in these languages. Translation to each language will be lead by an experienced member from the Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba User Group and each of them will be supported by a member of our community.
  • Outreach & awareness: Adankong will distribute the translated documents to introduce our community to Movement Strategy and to the implementation grants. She will also handle all the communication and awareness functions
  • Trainers: A member of the Igbo Wikimedian User Group or Wikimedian User Group Nigeria will lead the training on Wikipedia grants and how to apply for grant. he will be supported by Obihoja.They will also support our interested community members in applying for their own Movement Strategy implementation grants.

Do your activities include the translation of materials, and if so, in what languages will the translation be done? Please include details of those responsible for making the translations.
We will translate Movement Strategy pages to the 3 major languages in Nigeria namely Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba languages. While we have Community members who are experienced in writing these languages, we will be collaborate with the language communities to translate. Experienced editors from Igbo Wikimedian User Group, Hausa Wikimedian User Group and Yoruba Wikimedian User Group will lead these translations. Each of these editors will lead and mentor members of our community in these translations.

Our community members always look forward to holding discussions and editing Wikipedia. this project will help the sustainability of our members and will attract and retain many new members to our Network
