Project Goal[edit]

In this training workshop, we aim to:

  1. Recruit new Wikimedia editors
  2. Teach existing editors more editing skills especially in editing in the Incubator
  3. Translate more content and/or adjust translated content in the Tyap Wiktionary
  4. Exchange ideas in language translation
  5. Adding media contents on Wikimedia Commons
  6. Create more awareness about Wikimedia Foundation

Project Plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. Be sure to answer the following questions:

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We intend to hold a two-series two-day training workshop sets, each set to be comprised of experienced and inexperienced translators.

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

The Nigerian Wikimedia User Community, as well as the Wikimedia Incubator Community would be duly informed via community talk pages. The event would also be published on social media, on our Tyap Wikipedia community groups on Facebook, Telegram and WhatsApp.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We shall make use of the available Tyap language social media groups, especially on WhatsApp and Facebook, where the target population would be reached. On Telegram, the Tyap Wikipedia group with over 70 members would be our main communication channel. We target to reach at least 34 new and existing editors here, and continue the process of developing an active Tyap Wikimedia Community. In addition, our Project Page on Meta-Wiki would be another main meeting point for all participants.

4. Do you have experienced Wikimedia editors to lead the event? Please provide links to the usernames of these individuals.
For example: User:I JethroBT

We have at least three known editors, not all experienced equally, but experienced enough to edit and write articles and capable enough to lead the events. Viz:

  1. Kambai Akau
  2. Zwandien Bobai
  3. Stephen Kalat Jonathan

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

We would support participants with a Wifi connection to connect their browsing devices which they would be advised to come with. There would also be a brochure containing basic editing commands and an English-Tyap Lexicon to be printed on hard copy, which shall be handed to them to aid their translation work.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

The social media groups, especially, the Telegram group has been of immerse use in helping us maintain correspondence among editors and shall continue to be of great aid in achieving this. Their phone lines would be reached on voice calls to encourage them and the proposed Tyap Wikimedians User Group on MetaWiki when approved would equally be of great help to link us altogether.

7. Are you running any in-person events or activities? If so, you will need to complete the steps outlined on the Risk Assessment protocol related to COVID-19. When you have completed these steps, please provide a link to your completed copy of the risk assessment tool below:

Yes. We are running an in-person event. The link to the Risk Assessment Tool spreadsheet is here below:

8. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

This training workshop would help in bringing people of different ages and experiences to donate possible ways of translating from English in to Tyap as well as correct what was previously not well translated to make the Tyap free dictionary easy to comprehend by users.

Impact[edit]

How will you know if the project is successful and you've met your goals? Please include the following targets:

  1. Number of events: 2
  2. Number of participants: 20
  3. Number of new editors: 17-34
  4. Number of translations to be made or improved: 80-160
  5. Number of repeat participants (for projects that include a series of events): 3

  • Support Support: Approving this grant should enhance the development of the Tyap Language greatly. Some translations have been completed on the Incubator. There is need to have more translations and translators on Wikitionary and that necessitates this application.
