This report for a Rapid Grant approved in FY 2017-18 has been reviewed and accepted by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes and little more. We have applied for the anniversary program and editathon but later added one more editathon to the grant request. We also organised a Wikidata training in parallel. Details of the editathons like languages and participants and Wikidata training are available in the event page of the first program. We conducted one more editathon as a followup editathon the details of which are available at its event page. Apart from these we also conducted training and editing by 3 visually impaired persons, which was not present in our original grant request.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
2 events 3 events We originally proposed to have one editathon, followed by 12 editathons every month for which we applied for simple annual grant. But that was turned down. Then we changed it into two editathons to add articles to Tulu, Kannada and Konkani Wikipedias. We did these two editathons. We also organised a Wikidata training in parallel.

10 repeat participants 28 repeat participants Different set of people participated in two editathons
No target 66 edits for Wikidata Wikidata training which was conducted in parallel was not part of our grant request

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

As it can be seen under the Outcome section, we not only reached the targets but also exceeded them in many aspects. All the participants were very enthusiastic and were in cheerful mood throughout the editathons. We inaugurated the first ever library its kind in India for the use of Wikipedians. This library has about 300 reference books in Kannada, Tulu and English languages which can be used by the Wikipedians. Three visually impaired persons were trained on editing Wikipedia during this editathon. One of them added a new article also. This is also a first of its kind in India. Another bonus is the Wikidata training conducted by Asaf. The first anniversary program and inauguration of the library was reported by media[1],[2].

  • What did not work so well?

We could not bring in the promised number of new editors. May be this is due to the fact that most of the promised new participants were students for whom it happened coincided with festival holidays. Some of our active editors could not participate in the Wikidata training which was held in parallel during the first editathon. It could have yielded better result had we conducted the Wikidata training on different days.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Theme based editathon may yield still better results with generation of focused content. We may conduct theme based editathons.
