Strategic plan[edit]

Introduction[edit]

Wikimedia Community of the Republic of Srpska represents officially recognized user group editors and users of Wikimedia projects in the territory of the Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring countries (Serbia and Croatia).

The community was conceived and founded on the principle of non-governmental, non-profit, and nonparty association that accomplishes its goals exclusively in a non-profit way. The first organized activities were initiated in early 2015, and the group was officially recognized on October 6, 2015. The community today has 82 members.

The main objective of the Wikimedia Community of the Republic of Srpska is the promotion of the mission and vision of free knowledge through the collection, preservation, and dissemination of scientific, educational, cultural, and historical data which are available under a free license, in Serbian and other languages.

Programs[edit]

Note: All activities are planned in accordance with the current epidemiological situation in the country. The implementation will strictly take into account the recommendations of the WMF, the World Health Organization, and the Republic Crisis Staff. If the epidemiological situation caused by the Covid-19 worsens, the community will implement the activities in accordance with the contingency plan, in agreement with the WMF.

GLAM

Cooperation with the National and University Library of Republika Srpska - Library‌ ‌and‌ ‌Earthquake‌.

Wikimedian in residence (Wiki Ambassador) is a project of cooperation with GLAM and educational institutions, which includes the stay of delegated Wiki Ambassadors (community representatives and editors of Wikipedia) in institutions with which cooperation has been previously agreed. The goal of the project is that Wiki Ambassadors, in cooperation with employees, improve Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikimedia repository primarily) by releasing content relevant to the activities of the institution.

Wikimedian in residence is a project that has been implemented 4 times in the Republic of Srpska so far and which has aroused interest among GLAM institutions. Guided by the good results achieved so far through the implementation of this project, opportunities for cooperation with the most important GLAM institutions in the country, as well as the interest of community volunteers for internships and work on this project, it was decided to continue developing this project. This means the involvement of a larger number of institutions in the cooperation on the project as well as the inclusion of a larger number of volunteers in the work tasks arising from the goal. In addition to achieving goals that are directly related to expanding Wikimedia mission and releasing content, this project will contribute to improving the work of the community by giving new volunteers - ambassadors a chance to get involved in direct work, improve their skills and knowledge and thus achieve personal satisfaction.

The project will be thematically determined - work will be done on creating and supplementing articles on Wikipedia in the Serbian language that refer to Orthodox churches and monasteries located on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition, work will be done on releasing material related to the mentioned topic on the Wikimedia commons - photos of temples, available documentation and the like. The choice of topic is based on detailed research of the coverage of the topic during the realization of the project in 2021. Coverage of almost 20% was determined, which is a consequence of the lack of appropriate literature, which is extremely rare due to the specificity of the topic. For the needs of the project in 2021, cooperation has been agreed with relevant institutions that are interested in cooperation, and which have the appropriate literature. The institutions interested in cooperation are four Metropolitanates and one Faculty of Orthodox Theology. In connection with the above, in addition to the improvement of the GLAM program, the establishment of cooperation with the Faculty of Orthodox Theology will be correlated with the Edu program, which will also be enriched in this way.

GLAM

Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM)

Author of the winning photograph..
An interview.

During the specified period, the Wikimedia community of Republika Srpska took part in the global project Wiki loves monuments for the first time and successfully realized it in the Republic of Srpska. The realization of the project was a real challenge for the organizational team, especially the segments that included live events (photo tour and exhibition where the winners were announced) because the epidemiological situation in the country changed from day to day. Despite everything, the project was realized to the end in accordance with the original plan.

T-shirts.
Prize-giving ceremony.

The work on the realization of the project took place in three phases - preparatory, central, and final phase. Each of them required the maximum engagement of volunteers and members of the organizing team.

During the preparatory phase, after the formation of the organizational team and the division of responsibilities, a website for the needs of the competition, follow-up pages on Wikipedia and Wikimedia repository, as well as templates necessary for proper uploading of photos to the photo contest was created. In addition to the above, the most important item was the list of monuments, which was updated and supplemented through communication with the competent institutions. The list includes a total of 766 monuments located on the territory of the Republic of Srpska. The monuments are arranged in a single table, categorized according to municipalities, in alphabetical order, with all the necessary information (ID number, category of the good, coordinate, etc.). Also, during this phase, an expert jury was formed consisting of experts in the field of photography, architecture and long-time editors of Wikipedia, and cooperation was agreed with tourist organizations regarding the organization of photo tours in Herzegovina, as well as local protected temples which were objects of photography.

The second or central phase took place during the photo competition. During that time, the organizing team communicated with the contestants provided the necessary technical support, categorized the photographs, and worked on creating and illustrating relevant articles. In this phase, a photo tour was held in Herzegovina, during which 204 photos of monuments whose photos did not exist on the Wikimedia Commons or on the Internet, in general, were collected. A real treasure for us is the photographs of the Church of St. Petka - the only painted church from the 17th century in Herzegovina, as well as a visit to the cathedral in Trebinje, where we received permission from the clergy to photograph the interior, as well as rare literature, supplementing articles related to Catholic churches in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The final phase included summarizing the results of the competition, judging the photos by the jury, and preparing the exhibition. After the first round of judging, the jury unanimously decided, after reviewing the ranking list, about the ten winning photos. On that occasion, the president of the jury wrote a press release explaining the selection of the jury, which, together with the winning photos, was published on our website, blog, social networks and forwarded to the media via the mailing list. After selecting the ten most beautiful photos, preparations for the ceremony of announcing the winner began. The event was held in the Gallery of the Cultural Center East Sarajevo in East Sarajevo. On that occasion, ten winning photos were presented to the public, and the authors were presented with awards. The event was organized with the strictest respect for current epidemiological measures and orders of the Crisis Staff for Emergency Situations. He also attracted a lot of media attention, both from the Republic of Srpska and Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina which covered the event. In general, the community has always had excellent communication with the media through sending press releases, participating in TV and radio shows. The project was presented to the public through 38 media announcements. A total of 18 competitors participated. 1205 photos of protected monuments have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

Edu Wiki

Edu-Wiki - Seminar for professors

Seminar for professors - practical part, editing workshop.
Seminar for professors, Faculty of Philosophy Pale.

The Wikimedia Community of the Republic of Srpska is, in cooperation with the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of East Sarajevo in Pale, organizing a one-day seminar for professors, on May 14. In May The main goal of this event was to expand the network of teachers involved in the Edu Wiki program in the Republic of Srpska and increase the number of teachers trained to work on Wikipedia. The event was realized in the computer center of the Faculty of Philosophy in Pale, which was also a partner in this project.

23 professors from the Sarajevo-Romania region took part in the project: 10 professors who work at the university and 13 professors who work in secondary schools. The seminar program included two parts - theoretical and practical. Within the theoretical part, the professors were presented with the Wikimedia movement and its goals, Wikimedia projects, the Edu Wiki program with a special emphasis on the resources available to them within it, which can improve their work and the teaching process they lead. After that, special attention was paid to Wikipedia - rules and guidelines for editing, free licenses, communication with other editors, a portal where they can communicate with administrators and seek help, as well as the personal data protection system. Also, within the theoretical part and familiarization with Wikipedia, the lecturers singled out points of emphasis that directly relate to frequent prejudices about Wikipedia that prevail in academic circles and concern the quality of articles and the verifiability of information. In that segment, a special review was made on references and sources of knowledge, which are a mandatory segment of every article, and on the work of administrators and other experienced editors who check the changes made and ensure that the articles are in accordance with Wikipedia's rules.

After the theoretical part, an editing workshop was organized in which the participants were introduced to the process of creating an article on Wikipedia through direct work. On that occasion, the basics of editing, the working environment in the editorial framework, text formatting and working with basic templates, as well as illustrating the article, were presented. In this connection, Wikimedia Commons was presented in basic terms, the procedure of uploading multimedia material as well as its subsequent use on wiki and non-wiki sites. On that occasion, the participants created 18 new articles through individual work and pair work.

The aforementioned lecture concept ensured the dynamism of the seminar and had a positive effect on the motivation of the participants, who eventually expressed their desire to join the Edu wiki program in the Republic of Srpska and organize workshops with their students during the next school year.

At the end of the lecture, certificates were distributed to the participants.

WikiGap Edit-a-thon Sarajevo.

The Wiki Women in Republika Srpska 2022 is a project that aims to overcome the gender gap in Wikimedia projects. It includes a number of activities related to work on Wikimedia projects primarily with women. As part of the project, two editorial workshops, an editorial marathon and a photo tour were held. In addition, the project activities were directed towards the processing of less represented topics, primarily women's, and then others. The project lasted from March 8 to May 8, 2022. 51 participants took part in the project, 124 new articles were written and 4 articles on Wikipedia in the Serbian language were supplemented.

Wiki Gap

For the first time this year, the community joined the global Wiki Gap project, connecting activities related to the Community's Gender Gap program and the Wiki Women project in the Republic of Srpska. In cooperation with the Sarajevo Open Center, the Embassy of Sweden in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Wikimedia Sweden and Wikimedia Serbia, an editing marathon was organized to mark International Women's Day, which took place from March 5 to 15, 2022, on Wikipedia in Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian language. In addition, a one-day editing workshop was held in Sarajevo, during which 25 participants learned the basics of editing Wikipedia, and creating articles about important women from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The work took place on Wikipedia in the Bosnian language. For the community, this is a very significant step towards improving relations with Wikipedia editors from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which have been very bad until now. With this project, for the first time, cooperation between editors from the Republic of Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was established. Our Community was in charge of preparations related to the creation of working pages for three language editions of Wikipedia, the promotion of events and communication with the media, and the most important part of the lecture. A special challenge in the lecture part was to identify potential topics and select adequate personalities for biographical articles that cannot in any sense cause discomfort to the participants of the workshop - religious, historical, non-national, ethnic and similar, due to the last civil war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. To mutual satisfaction, the workshop was successfully implemented in a positive atmosphere. 25 women took part, and 36 new articles were created. The event was attended by the ambassador of Sweden to BiH and numerous media representatives.

Competitions and edit-a-thons on Wikipedia

Striving to contribute to increasing the number of quality articles on Wikipedia in the Serbian language and reducing the thematic gap, the Community organized three article writing competitions and two editing marathons. Topics were chosen based on representation by category, that is, lack of representation and poor coverage. In addition, one competition and both marathons were symbolically connected with the calendar marking of international holidays - International Rare Disease Day - the last day of February, World Refugee Day - June 20 and World Roma Day - April 8. In addition to the goals planned by the project, the Community wanted to participate in this way in raising awareness of the importance of the selected topics among the general public.
