Grants:Wikimedia UG Nigeria Grants/Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Community Support Fund/Carolyn Seaman/Wikidata celebration in Abuja/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

We are proud of our project as it successfully engaged old and new members of the Wikimedia Abuja Network as we collectively celebrated Wikidata's global birthday and hosted a WikiData edit-a-thon to teach our members how to contribute to Wikidata.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Recruit new editors 11 new editors recruited 11 new editors joined the network and a total of 23 editors were in attendance
Add or improve content on Wikidata We had an edit-a-thon contest and celebrated 3 top winners Our dashboard accounts for the content added: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Wikimedia_Nigeria_Abuja_Network/Wiki-Data_Birthday_edit_a_thon
Increase skills for existing editors Editors increased their editing skills None of the editors present had previous knowledge of editing on WikiData apart from the facilitator. But, the participation was rich to support a commendable skills building for the editors present
Celebrate the global Wikidata birthday Participants celebrated WikiData with gifts, cake, food, drinks and music After the edit-a-thon, the editors were treated to a celebration of WikiData, including the announcement of the edit-a-thon winners who received prizes in the first, second, and third positions. Also, participants gathered to take photos with the WikiData cake and thereafter ate the cake and food and drinks refreshments while networking and celebrating WikiData's birthday

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well? The variety of activities gave participants a balanced combination of work and play. And this worked well to get the best from participants. Also, starting early and closing on time also worked well to sustain the participation.
  • What did not work so well? The venue was tight and participants were cramped up in the space. This did not work so well for the event, although participants greatly appreciated the transport support that was given to them from the funds that we had originally intended to secure a bigger venue.
  • What would you do differently next time? We would probably source more funds or apportion funds differently to better prioritize a convenient space with facilities to better support participants.

Finances[edit]

Grant funds spent[edit]

Please describe how much grant money you spent for approved expenses, and tell us what you spent it on.

We sought to maximize the grant funds to host a great event at the best cost value possible. For the detailed breakdown of our expenses, please see the project expenses analysis report here.

The summary of our expenses are:

Venue - #50,000 - The sum of #34,500 was given to participants for transport support because one of the leaders offices was used as the venue at no cost

Food for 25 participants at #2500 per unit × 25 = #62,500 - This sum was expended as budgeted

Internet support - #15,000 - This sum was expended as budgeted

Cake = #25,000 - This sum was expended as budgeted

Branded T.shirts (for organizers and top contributors) 3,000*5 = #15,000 - The sum of #25,000 was expended because of the quality of the t-shirts procured

Design and Banners = #10,000 - This sum was not expended

Contingency - #2,500 - This sum was not expended

Total cost = #180,000 - The total sum of #162,000 was expended on implementing the event

Remaining funds[edit]

Do you have any remaining grant funds? Yes. The sum of N18,000 is remaining

The remaining funds of N18,000 is intended to contribute to the printing of a dedicated roll up banner for the Wikimedia Abuja Network, with the approval of the Wikimedia User group Nigeria leadership and grant leads.
