  • Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photographic competition to contribute images as well as (re)discover the cultural, historical, or scientific significance within the neighbourhood. This proposal will provide resources that will enable the participation of Kwara Sate University students in this years' Wiki Loves Monuments.

Project Goal[edit]

  1. Create awareness about the Wiki Loves Monuments and its activities.
  2. Recruit and train new editors through the various photo expeditions, upload sessions and edit-a-thons.
  3. Engage existing editors to contribute to Commons and other sister projects.
  4. Add more images about some selected tourist attractions in Kwara state and improve articles by integrating these images in their related articles or creating articles/article subsections for non existing articles.

1. Are you doing one editathon or training or a series of editathons or trainings?

We will be doing one Photowalk to 3 different sites, one edithaton in the school premises, and 2 series of online trainings.
  • The tourist sites include; Sobi Hills, Crushed Rock (Sango), and Dada pottery Ilorin (The largest traditional pottery in Nigeria).

2. How have you let relevant Wikimedia communities know about this proposal? You are required to provide links to on-wiki pages to inform these communities about your proposed work. Examples of places where this can be done include community discussion pages, affiliate discussion pages, or relevant project talk pages.
You may also provide information about external social media channels you may be using.

3. How will you let participants know about the edit-a-thon? In what ways will you be communicating with them?
For example, these can include on-wiki spaces, social media channels, mailing lists, messaging apps, or physical/online gatherings.

We will promote the contest through the fan club's official Social Media platforms (Facebook, and Twitter). We will also communicate with the participants through a fan clubs' WhatsApp group and the club executives will visit various departments within the school to inform them.

5. Do participants have the equipment or skills needed to participate and contribute high quality content? If not, how will you support them?

Yes, participants already have smartphones and laptops. All the participants are computer literates.

6. How will you engage participants after the event(s)?

We will do a follow-up with participants, and encourage them to follow the various social media handles that promotes Wikicommons projects. We will provide them with tips on creating, and editing Wikicommons.

7. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this project?

  • Images of the listed tourist, archaeological sites, and cultural heritage sites are not adequately covered on Wikimedia Commons.This contest is an opportunity to contribute high quality images of these Nigeria Monuments, that will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons for free usage.
  • It will help increase the awareness and participation of the Kwara State Univerisity Students who are still very new to the various projects on Wikimedia.
  • The edithaton under this projects will help to adequately train the students on how to make media files more visible, free and reusable.
  • It will help to increase the number of contributors to Wikimedia Common and other Wikimedia projects

  • A dashboard will be created for this and this dashboard will linked to the Wiki Loves Monument Category which will be used to track the uploads.
