The IRC Group Contacts are the liaisons between the Wikimedia community and the staff of the freenode IRC network; they are not agents of the Foundation in this rôle[1]. They are responsible for, and in charge of, all Wikimedia channels for all projects and languages. As part of this, they are involved in the management of hostname cloaks.
The contacts have a policy of staying out of channel affairs and letting them run themselves unless it becomes absolutely necessary for them to intervene. The most common contact task (after settings cloaks) is to redirect mis-named channels or takeover channels who are controlled by inactive users. Channel contacts/founders and access list members are left to run channels the vast majority of the time.
Right now, freenode staff are recognising the following people:
- Chair: James F. (talk) (James_F, James_F|Away, James_F|Busy on IRC)
- James is active in this position but due to other work with Wikimedia is not always available.
- Sean Whitton (talk) (seanw on IRC)
- Due to James's lack of availability, Sean undertakes most Group Contact work and should be contacted in preference to James for assistance.
