Amgine <nod!> But I should be picking your brains about the chat!
 _sj_ please.
Amgine What am I missing, and how can I get it!
Amgine Are there any good aggregations of bloggers?
_sj_ how large do you want this to be?
Amgine I dunno. Last I asked Erik he just said "the more the merrier"
Amgine But at the same time, he's the one who said "leading bloggers"....
_sj_ and what does |draft| mean?
Amgine It means I've already written that person's invitation.
 _sj_ ooh
 _sj_ individual invites?
 _sj_ :)
_sj_ asking them to do specific things?
_sj_ or is everyone just showing up?
Amgine :) He said it would be better, but they're really just the boilerplate text
Amgine Everyone is just showing up, as far as I know.
Amgine Chatmag is setting up an IRC java, but that's abou tit.
 _sj_ what's that?
Amgine I'd love for there to be an audio chat at the same time, but don't know how.
 _sj_ oh, I see now.
Amgine Just an applet for people who don't have clients.
_sj_ I have a little cgi that should work in some non-java browsers.
_sj_ I'll add a link to that too.
Amgine <nod> That would be nice.
_sj_ It's not dangerous to give out the address,
_sj_	since it's limited to the channels you let it connect to.
	_sj_	sound...
_sj_	I've never done that either.
_sj_	we don't have lots of sound-freaks on wp yet.
Amgine	Heh... I know... weird. Personally, I use Mac's iChat, and yes I have the camera.
	_sj_	ever used skype?
	_sj_	hey, ichat, cool
	Amgine	No.
Amgine	I could learn to use Skype tomorrow...
Amgine	Do you have an ichat account
	Amgine	?
	_sj_	one mo
	_sj_	no
	_sj_	no mac either.
_sj_	can I get one anyway?
	_sj_	I'm writing some geeks...
Amgine	<nod> You can get ichat for other platforms...
	Amgine	It's basically AIM.
	_sj_	ah so.
	_sj_	okay, mail away
_sj_	we'll see what they say
Amgine	<grin> Okay. Anything you can think of that I should have asked?
_sj_	well, we need a better agenda.
_sj_	there should be some pre-chat discussion.
_sj_	people should be able to get things off their chest ahead of time,
_sj_	and should have time to research their opinions and say things backed up by links
Amgine	Should this be written out, then?
_sj_	esp. if we're going to have serious people showing up.
Amgine	There are a couple links there.
	_sj_	1) wikinews and blogs
_sj_	get some bloggers who are wikipedians to comment.
_sj_	not just joi and me, either
	_sj_	2) wikinews and news
Amgine	<nod> Good idea... Can I put a link to wikiwiki thing?
	_sj_	use some specific examples
	_sj_	sure :)
	_sj_	specific examples of articles,
_sj_	how big media picked them up,
_sj_	how big bloggers picked them up / cf technorati's opinion of popularity
_sj_	and how wikinews picked up and provided npov overviews/summaries
	_sj_	compare : link density
_sj_	# of different opinions covered
_sj_	variance of opinions from across the spectrum linked-to in the refs section
_sj_	(most blogs only link to agreeing or disagreeing articles, either for support or to ridicule/contradict)
_sj_	# of editors involved in the articl3e.
_sj_	make sure some of the active editors of one or two example articles show up for the chat
_sj_	you might specially ask bloggers used as examples to show up, too.
_sj_	I want to learn things I didn't know before about the news process
_sj_	and I think the others will too...
Amgine	Heh... at the moment, it is scheduled to take place in our working channel - six different language wikinews use that.
_sj_	how big bloggers really get their stories, how their process differs from the process used by the active wikinewsans
	_sj_	good.
_sj_	we should pick examples that were reported by us in different langs
Amgine	<nod> I've invited journalists/bloggers from Brazil, Italy, Japan, and UK specifically. And I have invited all the major editors on all the wikinews.
_sj_	hmmm, maybe I'll write a meta-retrospective of the webcred conference
_sj_	we could compare that to jay rosen's meta-retro
_sj_	(where he went out and asked people questions, doing original research that way)
Amgine	<humphs> Jay Rosen is quite dense to explicate.
_sj_	and the typical meta-retros that just linked to a few non-meta retros by attendees
_sj_	I was just thinking of mentioning that he did original research for his retro; whereas we are just linking to lots and lots of viewpoints.
Amgine	Okay, I also specifically invited some of the bloggers who were negative about the heavy journalist/academic balance of the webcred.
Amgine	Wikinews is also (occasionally) doing original reporting.
	Amgine	Including original photojournalism.
Amgine	I'm going to copy this conversation to notes, if that's all right with you?
	_sj_	'course
	Amgine	<grin>
_sj_	I know we are doing some original reporting.
_sj_	but on the whole, that's not our bag yet.
_sj_	and we should focus on what wikinews naturally does better than anyone else:
_sj_	provide links out to ten or twenty different povs.
Amgine	Definitely. We need more infrastructure.
_sj_	don't let people pin us down about original reporting,
_sj_	since we don't do enough to know what it will look like yet
_sj_	I'll think and add some big-media names to the list.
Amgine	<nod> We also don't want to get pinned down about bandwidth/hosting.
Amgine	At least one group has already brought that up with me... "can you host our podcasts?"
	_sj_	hmmmm, right.
Amgine	Which also brings up mailing lists. There are a few of them for bloggers. I am leary of broadcasting an invitation. What do you think?
_sj_	since we don't have a good editing structure for sound/video yet, that's complicated.
_sj_	I wouldn't broadcast like that.
Amgine	There has been an ongoing discussion of putting together an hourly-type short report.
_sj_	bloggers will, you know, blog about it
Amgine	Both in video and sound.
	_sj_	hourly?
_sj_	how long is the chat?
Amgine	The chat is set for two hours, from 2200-2400UTC
	Amgine	Plus post-discussion
_sj_	it would be nice to have an agenda
_sj_	so people who don't have more than 20 minutes can drop in for what they care about
_sj_	just a general "here's what we hope to address in each half hour"
Amgine	We can formalize the agenda Erik has written.
	_sj_	with no promises...
	_sj_	cool.
Amgine	And you suggest a pre-discussion?
	_sj_	yes, on-wiki
Amgine	Plus a few pages discussing issues, right?
	Amgine	Oh, okay.
	_sj_	right.
	_sj_	get that conversation started
_sj_	so people can say "here's my thought [link]"
_sj_	instead of spamming the channel.
	Amgine	<nod>
	Amgine	http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikinews_and_Blogs
_sj_	we'll probably have more people than #wikipedia for part of the chat; I hope it doesn't get too hard to hear signal.
Amgine	That should probably the base page, plus as many subpages as you think appropriate
	_sj_	I saw.
_sj_	re: invites, do you want me to send them to people I know personally?
_sj_	and how many international people do you want?
_sj_	it would be hard to have non-english discussion, I'm afraid :(
Amgine	<nod> Yah, I will probably cover some of them, too.
Amgine	Me too. We can open a few extra channels too. Or add in the regular lnaguage channels.
	Amgine	Like #de.wikinews.
	_sj_	hmm, that might work.
_sj_	then there should be someone in charge of monitoring those chans and conveying what they're talking about
	_sj_	to the main channel
_sj_	so one designated person for each of de and fr, maybe?
Amgine	I can try to organize that with the other wiki editors
	_sj_	ok.
_sj_	else we should just stick with one chan
_sj_	and let people post whatever lang they need
	Amgine	<shrug> That'
Amgine	s what they do now.
_sj_	with the understanding that people will use english unless they get really fed up.
_sj_	I asked in the context of inviting bloggers
_sj_	who don't write in english
Amgine	I would love to have other languages present, but this is likely to be a babble.
Amgine	So I focused on dual-language bloggers.
	_sj_	we only have three?
Amgine	No, there's about a dozen of them.
Amgine	Not all will attend, of course.
_sj_	hehe, who suggested mary hodder?
	_sj_	she's a dear
Amgine	I did, actually... It seemed she was.
_sj_ she ended up writing an article about the puzzle-hunt I was in a few weeks back
_sj_ hmm, I'll find you many, many more int'l lists.
_sj_ what do you think about sending out anothr 50 or so invites to bloggers outside the us/europe?
 Amgine Great idea.
_sj_ I've been working on a bridgeblogging project this weekend
 Amgine bridgeblogging?
_sj_ trying to identify people in each part of the world who are conveying what's going on in their part of the universe to everyone else
_sj_ reporting on local culture, news, politics, travel... to people in other countries/cultures
 Amgine Where?
_sj_ bridging, rather than just offering a window into, the local events
 _sj_ http://cyber.law.harvard.edu:8080/globalvoices/wiki/index.php/Ghana
 Amgine 8080
 Amgine ?
 _sj_ :)
 Amgine Zephyr Teachout?
 _sj_ the one and only.
_sj_ she knows a lot about blogs around the world... and knows a wicked number of languages.
 Amgine <nod>
 Amgine Hoder too...
Amgine You have quite the cabal.
Amgine Can you invite some of these as well?
