This page shows, in different sizes, an example of a diagram, created as a table of which the cells have no content, but only varying background colors.

Some browsers do not show the first example (cells of a single pixel). Several browsers reduce the widths of the cells if needed to fit the table in the width of the browser window; as a result the squares become rectangles.
