How happy were you to participate to Wiki Loves Africa in 2016 ?

[edit]

Question Question: How happy were you to participate to Wiki Loves Africa in 2016 ?. What does it mean to you and your Chapter/UG

Wikimedia Tunisia

[edit]

Wiki Loves Africa is a great African experience, it the first and the best african contest who bring a lot interesting photos about Africa.

The third time Tunisia take part of the event more than 2000 photos were uploaded in Tunisia, this event should be organized every year in Africa with a new topic,

many participants wait every year for this event, because they think that is an interesting contest for africa and Tunisia

Wikimedia Egypt

[edit]

Wiki Loves africa 2016 theme was interesting - the attendees was not too many but they was happy . and we get many good photos in Egypt.

Wikimedia Algeria

[edit]

Wiki Loves africa 2016 just hearing the theme of wikilove africa 2016 - has make the attendees are very happy and they express their intention to participate to the contest. with the theme Music and Dance of this year we discovered many style of music in Algeria . and we had very happy to share that freely to all the world

Uganda

[edit]

Wiki loves Africa 2016 increased our boundaries of participants which made it quite interesting and eye opening to other views through out the competition.

Cameroun

[edit]

Wikimedia Nigeria

[edit]

As a community, our participation in the annual contest can not be overemphasised because of the following:

  1. Global reach survey conducted in Nigeria shows that 23% of Nigerians are aware of Wikipedia. However, our participation helps to introduce the project to groups within our focal point- Music and Dance. Hence, increase in awareness of Wikipedia.
  2. It helps us as a community to strengthen our ties with organisation outside Wikimedia community eg Goge Africa, Lagos State University etc. This arrangement has metamorphosed to a partnership that has led to the proposed Wikipedia in Residence with GogeAfrica an organisation which focus on African based cultural heritage .
  3. Numerically speaking ,our community membership has increased by 30% within the course of the project in Nigeria.

Ghana

[edit]

We were very happy and enthusiastic to have Wiki Loves Africa in Ghana. It faced us the platform to share an important element of our culture and heritage that is music. We also used that to create awareness within our community.

Zimbabwe

[edit]

The Wiki Loves Africa is a wonderful international creative project that I adore and I was greatly humbled to partner in it and work on it in Zimbabwe. It was refreshing and relevant to the global digital trends we experience today.

Tell us about your experience of WLAf in 2016

Question Question: Tell us about your experience of WLAf in 2016 in a few sentences,

  • How easy was the theme "Dance and Music" to engage with?
  • What were the challenges of hosting WLAf events in your country?
  • What were the successes of hosting WLAf events in your country?

  • How easy was the theme "Dance and Music" to engage with?

  • What were the challenges of hosting WLAf events in your country?

  • What were the successes of hosting WLAf events in your country?

Wikimedia Egypt

[edit]
  • How easy was the theme "Dance and Music" to engage with?

Not very easy . as the Dance and Music photography is not so popular in Egypt .

  • What were the challenges of hosting WLAf events in your country?

It was easy we as a user group made many photography events before.

  • What were the successes of hosting WLAf events in your country?

It was very successful we uploaded this year 714 photo .

Wikimedia Algeria

[edit]
  • How easy was the theme "Dance and Music" to engage with?

Not very easy when the festival dates are organized during the summer and spring, but we found some photographers, they took pictures during this period and they agreed to share their work in the contest

  • What were the challenges of hosting WLAf events in your country?

The first chalege is to present the philosophy of Open and Free - freely sharing a job without demanding anything - Many Algerians do not understand that any digitized work requires creative licenses of community if we want to use it without pay. It is this obstacle of understanding that one must pass by launching each contest.

  • What were the successes of hosting WLAf events in your country?

We are known to photo associations in Algeria, and our concour is known throughout Algeria

Uganda

[edit]

The theme "Dance and Music" was initially not easy to engage with as it included the audio and video aspect. But with the trainings held helped the participants be able to engage in all the forma of media available on wikimedia commons.

Some of the challenges of hosting WLAF include costs of Data, venues for events and transport to reach people beyond the capital city.

Some of the successes of hosting WLAF , is the ability to reach more people and increase the wikimedia community in Uganda. For the existing community, it help increase the enthusiasm of being apart of an international competition so it boosts moral among members. It also helps us get more content e.g hard copy how to's

Cameroun

[edit]
  • How easy was the theme "Dance and Music" to engage with?

  • What were the challenges of hosting WLAf events in your country?

  • What were the successes of hosting WLAf events in your country?

Wikimedia Nigeria

[edit]
  • How easy was the theme "Dance and Music" to engage with?

The theme "Dance and Music" was not so difficult to relate with as a community because we prepared for it.

  • What were the challenges of hosting WLAf events in your country?

In Nigeria, Dance and Music is a traditionally inclined subject. As a community, we under-emphasised this area of the project and therefore affected the outcome of the project negatively. As a matter of fact, we were unable to take photograph of some selected places because doing so is regarded as taboo

  • What were the successes of hosting WLAf events in your country?
*We were able to establish more partnership with like minded organisations
*Increase in membership number
*Increase in community engagement

Ghana

[edit]

Music and dance were quite easy due to the fact that there are different groups in Ghana with different music and dance. This make it easier with getting content. Our only issue was that dance needed video coverage and that was where we had some challenges since we have poor internet connection which does not support uploads easily.

Lack of media accreditation made us miss out on some very important programmes we could have captured.
Poor internet connectivity affected the number of videos we could upload.
We were able to establish a partnership with the Prof J.H Nketia Archives a division of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana through WLAF.
We were able to represent Ghana's culture and through music and dance during Wiki Loves Africa.
We created awareness about Wikipedia and the need to create more content on Ghana through Wiki Loves Africa

Zimbabwe

[edit]

It was an eyeopening experience, a civilization, a  revolution, a creative process.

  • How easy was the theme "Dance and Music" to engage with?
Very, though we didn't get to do it in the end due to other challenges beyond our control.
  • What were the challenges of hosting WLAf events in your country?
To get trustworthy volunteers, to get  trustworthy venue hosts, Resources,
  • What were the successes of hosting WLAf events in your country?
A better turn out on the introductory workshops days. The liveness of the FB page: Wiki Zimbabwe

How to increase participation and engagement?

[edit]

Question Question: What could be done in future Wiki Loves Africa projects that would increase participation and engagement? Given the challenges, what could be done ?

  • Some teams rather engage in edit-a-thons and photo hunts. Others mostly focus on launching ceremony, SM communication and final ceremony with local winners. Yet others focus their energy in creating a relationship with professional photographers. Do you have other suggestions ?

Wikimedia Tunisia

[edit]

Wikimedia Ivory Coast

[edit]

Wikimedia Egypt

[edit]

I think we need to Give more attention to social and public media

Wikimedia Algeria

[edit]

We hope if that next contest we continue by the same path add to this : - more media contact and conference add a special price to each best quality photo if she give a huge potentiality to creating a new article under any langauge.

Uganda

[edit]

I think to increase participation and engagement , the competition should continue being consistent and taking place every year.

hope we can increase participation geographically in Uganda and be able to reach participants who have content but do not have means to upload it .

I think if we could increase the platforms to make the competition more nationally known e.g blogs, local news papers etc

Cameroun

[edit]

Wikimedia Nigeria

[edit]

Being a photo contest, combination of all the mentioned activities should be embraced for the success of the project. More so, we plan to include radio interview of our selected sites and personalties .The audio interview by the authorised person will be published on commons and then used as additional content for this project.

Ghana

[edit]

WE believe a hybrid and a combination of all the above works best since in the end all sectors will be tackled, however Teams should be able to identify where their strength is and focus there then subsequently they can look at the others and give them some attention if time and resources will allow them to do so.

Zimbabwe

[edit]

Webinars are important, creation of Creative, Information, Youth Digital Hubs mostly in Southern Africa, Creating leadership and Volunteer, Investing resources.

Do you have suggestions of what could be changed at the global level of the organization ?

[edit]

Question Question: Do you have suggestions of what could be changed at the global level of the organization ? For example:

  • Was the process for asking and receiving the grant money efficient ?
  • Was the process for reporting events and activities too difficult ?
  • Should we change the contest homepage ?
  • Were you happy with the global gifts proposed or do you have suggestions for next year ?
  • In 2016, we did not use a website. Was it a problem to you ? Should we get a website again ?
  • Are you happy with the contest homepage or should we try to update it ?
  • Did WLA global Facebook and Twitter accounts adequately republished your own publications ? Do you have suggestions for their use
  • etc.

Note : those are examples. Feel free not to answer all questions if you have no comment. Or feel free to add comments on a specific point if you feel it is needed.

Des mises à jour sont nécessaires.

  • Did WLA global Facebook and Twitter accounts adequately republished your own publications ? Do you have suggestions for their use ?

Wikimedia Egypt

[edit]

Wikimedia Algeria

[edit]
  • Was the process for asking and receiving the grant money efficient ? we have difficulty to recieving dollars when we use euro Currency account
  • Was the process for reporting events and activities too difficult ? easy but need to communicated at the beginin of the contest
  • Should we change the contest homepage ? the homepage are simple - but it's important that we can able to find all pages of the contest because we haven't only one home page see on (meta - commons)
  • Were you happy with the global gifts proposed or do you have suggestions for next year ? it's Ok
  • In 2016, we did not use a website. Was it a problem to you ? Should we get a website again ? Yes website is very important to promote the showcase of the contest - the homepage should be updated and we remarque that the website are not continusely updated.
  • Are you happy with the contest homepage or should we try to update it ? We advise to try to create another new design of the page not just updated it
  • Did WLA global Facebook and Twitter accounts adequately republished your own publications ? Do you have suggestions for their use : not all but the best of our publications - think to instagram
  • etc.

Uganda

[edit]
  • Was the process for reporting events and activities too difficult ? No
  • In 2016, we did not use a website. Was it a problem to you ? Should we get a website again ? Yes, i think the website should be used again
  • Are you happy with the contest homepage or should we try to update it ? Yes, am happy with the homepage
  • Did WLA global Facebook and Twitter accounts adequately republished your own publications ? NO

Cameroun

[edit]
  • Was the process for asking and receiving the grant money efficient ? Pas de problème à ce niveau
  • Was the process for reporting events and activities too difficult ? Pas de problème à ce niveau
  • Should we change the contest homepage ?
  • Were you happy with the global gifts proposed or do you have suggestions for next year ? C'est bon pour les prix
  • In 2016, we did not use a website. Was it a problem to you ? Should we get a website again ? Pas vraiment obligatoire
  • Are you happy with the contest homepage or should we try to update it ? Une mise à jour est toujours nécessaire
  • Did WLA global Facebook and Twitter accounts adequately republished your own publications ? Do you have suggestions for their use

etc.

  • There is need to carry-out proper background check and review of all proposed sites for our local events
  • Increase publicity

Ghana

[edit]

The process of asking and receiving money was ok but it could be still improved.

The reporting process was ok just that it was a novelty.

The contest homepage can still be maintained but improved.

Yes we were happy with the Global prizes they can either be maintained or made better.

We believe the website is good and helpful especially to people who are not Wikimedians and not used to Meta and other Wiki stuff.

The contest homepage should be updated.

In terms of social media we believe more can be done to increase the visibility of the projects we also think Insatgram could also be really utilized.

The Theme for WLAf 2017

[edit]

Over the past 2 years, the theme has been selected by the community. This year, as the Wiki Loves Women project is not being funded by the WMF, we are going to be bold ... and suggest the following theme: People at Work

Competition scope: The theme calls for photographs, videos and audio files that document all manner of occupations undertake across the continent - formal and informal, contemporary and ancient, business-oriented and creative. There will be a special prize that will be concentrated on visually capturing women working, and another that illustrates rare, fading or threatened traditional craft, style or way of working.

What Wikipedians should do ...
