Wikimania 2021/Scholarships/Community in Botswana/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Yes , we met our goals, the team got to be aware on what Wikipedia is and beyond it. As well as get an exposure to a very informative virtual conference like Wikimania that was so diverse and inclusive. We got to network and learn how other communities excel hence we could all learn and benchmark.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
We were targeting to support 15 participants with data bundles subscription to have better internet connection for Wikimania. We managed support 10 participants whom showed great interest to be part of Wikimania. There were sufficient funds for this as we supported a lesser number than we anticipated. We bought airtime in bulk and distributed to partipants
We hosted two Wikimania post events we paid the 2 days for the venue There was a good turn around we had on average 10 participants for the 2 Wikimania post events dates. The post event had to be divided into two because the first session I had to make some intro and create awarenesss on what Wikipedia is, Sister Projects and Wikimania. The second session the teams viewed numerous presentation on Wikimania and including the session I presented on Wiki Loves Women Focus Group Members programme, which was a very informative session talking about the gender gap space in Wiki.
Support 4 people who needed child care services We Supported 4 women who needed child care service when we hosted our Wikimania post events for 2 days This was successful to carry out as it was well put in the budget and anticipated.
Make a presentation at Wikimania on Gender Gap Candy presented the Wiki Loves Women Focus Group Members programme, with the attendance of several Focus Group members and other audience across the world. The presentation was a great way to share the initiatives like Wiki Loves Women which are set in place to make a difference and increase visibility of women online and change the narrative.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

Being able to have enough fund to support the group with data bundles as well as support those who needed help with child care support services was an great advantage to retain people and have them fully engaged.

We also got to learn how we can contribute to the Wiki Sister projects like Wiki Loves Women, which gave the Wikimedia Botswana Usergroup more exposure on what the SheSaid Campaign's about and how they can participate, which they did contribute to Wikiquote and the turn around is impressive concerning the SheSaid contributions. So being part of Wikimania definitely created some traction and interest for the Usergroup to know which other areas they can contribute to in Wiki.

  • What did not work so well?

Receiving the funds late was a disadvantage because it would have been more interactive as they participate and engage in real time.

  • What would you do differently next time?

Receiving the funds earlier makes facilitation more easier, but overall it was a great experience for a first time virtual conference.
