How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I was privilege to attend the 2022 Wikimania virtually with a scholarship grant of 250 dollars from the wikimania foundation. This years event which was tagged the festival edition was the first time I will be attending the wikimania event and I am grateful for this opportunity.

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?

The scholarship grant was spent on the following items Headphone: a wireless bluetooth headset was purchased at the rate of 50 dollars, the device was used to listen to the various live sessions MiFi router: for fast and reliable internet facility, I purchased a MiFi router with internet subscription at the rate of 110 dollars Transportation: my environment was not so conducive to attend the event because of noise and distractions from those around so I had to visit a nearby library daily to avoid noise during the period of the conference and this cost me the sum of 20 dollars. Feeding: leaving my house for a more conducive environment means I had to spend money on feeding and I expended the sum of 60 dollars for breakfast and lunch during the cause of the event. A total of 240 dollars formed my expenses through the wikimania event.

Takeaways – choose 3 specific Wikimania sessions you attended and describe your key take-aways per session.

The three sessions that was most informing to be are the Education and partnership session, wiki tools for cultural heritage education: an OER created by Wikimedia Chile session and Addressing Climate Change and Environmental Issues using Wikimedia Projects. The Education and partnership session was delivered by Sandeep Kaur. There I learnt how students, teachers and administrators can benefits from partnership with Wikipedia. Students learn about the basics of copyright and free licenses, they can strengthen their critical thinking, cultivate the ability of producing knowledge, learn about online etiquettes and online citizenship, develop collaboration skills, develop basic skills of reading and writing, improved their self-confidence and so on. Teachers on the other end can develop positive teaching experience, have closer relationship with students, improve their teaching skills, constantly update their knowledge, develop collaboration skills, have less stress and frustration, better community relationship and conduct more in depth research. Addressing Climate Change and Environmental Issues using Wikimedia Projects: Revisiting the Green Wiki was delivered by Omorodion Okuonghae and Jeremiah Ugwulebo. There I learnt that deforestation and fossil fuel consumption are the major causes of climate change. I also learnt that effect of climate change include, hotter temperature, increased wildfire, inadequate food, loss of specie, more health risk and increased conflicts. The roles of wikimedians in averting climate change include creating public awareness, documenting important climate related data in our locality and volunteering to join work related groups and campaigns that focus on climate change. The third intriguing session was the wiki tools for cultural heritage education: an OER created by Wikimedia Chile was delivered by Rocio Aravena. I learnt about intersection between cultural heritage education and the Wikimedia projects, the experience and steps in the creation of OER; alliances and other institutions and the experience of using OER with educational communities.

How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?

Connecting with people across the globe during the event was made easy because of the application deployed for the event. I was able to chat and get responses from participants from different countries in the world.
