How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?
I attended the Wikimania conference 2022 virtually. I appreciate that the sessions were recorded and posted on Youtube. This gave me the possibility to watch the videos as many time as I needed, giving me time to pause, making notes, take my time to understand the content and assimilate it.
What did you spend the scholarship funds on?
I used part of the scholarship for some device in order to follow the conference virtually, such as headphones... I plan to save part of it for some future Wikipedia related project I'm currently working on.
Takeaways – choose 3 specific Wikimania sessions you attended and describe your key take-aways per session.
I was truly impressed to see how many different projects there are all over the world and in how many different ways Wikimedia is helping in th e develop of every of them.
I found inspiring to see how the Wikipedia cummunity in Chile help to share information about the new constitution and the problem they faced due to digital vandalism. Sharing information on such a sensitive subject such as politics as objective as possible and making this knowledge accessible to as many people as possible, this I think embody the very spirit of Wikipedia: unprejudice and open-minded.
The Ikusgela project realize another pillar of Wikimedia principle: inclusion. Basque Wikimedians created a platform where free pedagogical videos in Basque language are shared. In my opinion the importance of the projects lies in the language they are using. Share knowledge in a minority language can empower minority/endangered language communities and make sure that the language is spoken by the youngest generation. I really appreciate the idea and hope that in future in can be extand to many other minority languages.
I also appreciate that Wikimedians from Botswana shared the challenges they faced while building a community there. It is sometimes easy to forget how much work and many challenges hide behind every project and finding motivated people willing to engange and spend their time in a long term project is surely one of those. I consinder this session important because we can learn from their experience. When building a community, we don't have to start from zero again. Instead we can make treasure of what has been shared with us, connect with them, ask for help or advice.
How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?
While listening to the talks, I indentified those project that were similar or hade similar goals with mine. I made notes, saving the name(s) of the speaker(s), the project and to which community they belong. In so doing I have the opportunity to connect with them for future collaborations.
I also shared my experience at Wikimania 2022 with friends and colleagues. Hopefully they will find the motivation to join the conference next year.
