How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I have attended Wikimania 2022 virtually. It is a turning point for Wikimania to be a virtual event, even partially. It is great because it alleviated the crucial burden of borders, travel limitations, and siege many volunteers face.

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?

Meals mostly, earphones, book and pet care.

Takeaways – choose 3 specific Wikimania sessions you attended and describe your key take-aways per session.

A few years when I was a newcomer, someone showed me an article about Toilet paper orientation. Back then, it felt weird to devote time to writing such articles. It is still weird, actually, but my perception has transformed after I became a loyal follower of depths of Wikipedia. Sometimes the trivial information that may sound useless could be a tool to attract editors and contributors to the Wikimedia world who can build trivial and non-trivial information. It would happen with contemporary methods of persuasion and highlighting. It made me think about approaching a wide range of populations with something in their hand that could easily go through their minds and affects their ideas about editing in Wikimedia, making them feel relevant, and attached to this world.

I thrived through Wikimedia and became a Workshop organizer. I have co-organized Interwiki Women Collaboration 2020 workshop, which aimed to bridge the gap in content about women. I attended a Wikimania session that showed the gap from a different angle, the gap in female contributors in Arabic Wikipedia. I searched many studies about the reason behind such gap in other Wikipedias, and I realized the tremendous gap in studies about this gap in the Arabic community and other underrepresented communities that would help initiate a strategy of solution.

What attracted me the most to attend Wikimania is my eagerness to know how others perform and achieve their Wikimedia goals from capacity building to software improving. I had many insights from the real examples I saw in "How to organise a local Hackathon", "Volunteer developers and improving content partnership software in the Wikimedia environment", "OpenRefine for Wikimedia developers - ask us anything!" and " Showcasing Youth Diversity and Inclusion through Storytelling in the Wikimedia Movement".

It is worth mentioning that I participated as a speaker in two session, the first one was "Showcasing Youth Diversity and Inclusion through Storytelling in the Wikimedia Movement" and the second one was "Leadership Development Working Group: What are we doing and why?" It was a highlight from me after years of shielding myself from public speaking.

How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?

I enjoyed the hackathon events very much with their interactive formats. I also connected with others in the networking tent. I also had fun in the "Guess What! It's trivia and games time!" session, Received a barnstar, and the "Wiki Banquet".
