Over the last five academic terms, 978 students from the Arab World added more than 42.6 million bytes of content to the Arabic Wikipedia, as part of the Wikipedia Education Program. This would require more than 28 reams of paper, if they were printed! The highest contributions ever in one term came from the Egyptian students in Spring/Summer 2014, with more than 12.38 million bytes of new Arabic content. Last month, Egyptian students and Wikimedians celebrated the end of their 5th term editing Wikipedia. During this term alone, 170 students from two universities in Egypt enrolled in 13 Wikipedia Education Program courses. As a result, student editors created 839 new pages and worked on many existing ones too. See the photos of their celebration conference on Wikimedia Commons.

Having a large share of female participants in the program in Egypt (i.e. 88% of students in the last two terms were female), helped increase gender diversity on the encyclopedia. But this was not their only effort in this regard. Last term, the program started the first courses dedicated to writing articles about women, in an attempt to bridge the gender gap on Wikipedia. May Hachem, a student leader in Ain Shams university who launched the first course about women, said: "Having outstanding examples from both genders and writing about them on Wikipedia should be a message for us to let others learn from their experience. But most articles about celebrities I see on Wikipedia are about men. If we are starting a new research course, why should we just write similar articles with the same scope when we can replace it by a different topic with the same effectiveness?" May believes that the huge proportion of female students in the Egypt Program must be used to develop the content of Wikipedia, since many of them are already interested in creating equal rights and spaces for women in society, and usually women tend to write about women. "I don't want to deal with it from a feminist perspective, but women must have the same place in history like men."

Last summer, Egyptian volunteers had the idea of motivating students to write about women by launching a writing contest with simple prizes for the highest contributors. Students usually are not as active during the summer as during their academic terms, because they have no classes, are not meeting with their professors and many of them tend to travel away from home during their vacations. The idea was to find the right motivation to raise the competition spirit between new editors, as the contest rules required participants to be new users with less than 1,500 edits on Wikipedia so far. WikiWomen Prize is a competition funded by a grant from the Wikimedia foundation, which lasted from the beginning of September through the end of October 2014. The competition supported the Education Program and had many other achievements including the following:

30 female and male users participated in the competition.
48% of the content added by students during spring/summer 2014 was in September (during the contest). This represents 5.9 million bytes of content.
28% of the content students added during the entire term came from women-related courses.
18 articles were nominated by students to be featured and good articles on Wikipedia. Though the nominations that received positive votes and are expected to succeed may be half or even less of the total (since they were nominated by new editors), it can still be seen as an indicator of quality.

Female students were not the only ones who were passionate about the idea of increasing gender diversity and writing about women, though the contest originally targeted women and was aimed at attracting more female users to Wikipedia. The WikiWomen Prize was open to anyone who wanted to participate, including male users: this encouraged male students to compete with their female colleagues for the top prizes. The first prize went to Ahmed Yousry, who is a student editor and a Wikipedia Ambassador; he was first introduced to Wikipedia by the Education Program in Egypt. Ahmed started volunteering for the program by translating featured articles from the English Wikipedia to the Arabic Wikipedia. The first article he developed on Wikipedia was about Birth control movement in the United States, which is now a featured article, thanks to his efforts. As soon as Ahmed got acquainted with the editing skills on Wikipedia, he started serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador in his college to help other students who wanted to follow his lead. Ahmed did not hesitate to join the first Wikipedia course on women and society, during which he developed a lot of featured content -- including two articles with Wikipedia's golden star and two with the silver star. The second prize went to Abdel-Rahman Elsakka, who is now serving as a Wikipedia ambassador and is exerting great efforts to get his colleagues at Al-Azhar University introduced to Wikipedia. The third prize went to Hanan Abdel-Rahman and the Fourth to Esraa Helmy. Both Hanan and Esraa are Ain Shams University students who edited Wikipedia for the first time this past term and participated actively in the competition.

Over five consecutive terms, Egyptian students have added massive amounts of content to Wikipedia that now accounts for 3% of the whole Arabic encyclopedia. This content also increases article quality with a growing number of featured and good articles that represent approximately 6% of the featured content of the Arabic Wikipedia at the time of this writing. Volunteers run and develop the Wikipedia Education Program in Egypt and successfully guide new contributors from one term to the next. The Wikipedia Education Program has overcome many challenges and continues to expand to new courses and universities, thanks to volunteer efforts and support from the recently established Egypt Wikimedians user group.

خلال خمسة فصول دراسية، أضاف 978 طالب من العالم العربي أكثر من 42.6 مليون بايت من المحتوى العربي إلى ويكيبيديا. قد يتطلب هذا الكم أكثر من 28 رزمة من الورق إذا طُبع! جاءت أعلى المساهمات على الإطلاق خلال فصل دراسي واحد جاءت من طلاب مصر في ربيع وصيف 2014 حيث أضافوا 12.38 مليون بايت. احتفل طلاب وويكيميديو مصر الشهر الماض بنهاية فصلهم الدراسي الخامس على ويكيبيديا. خلال هذا الفصل فقط سجل 170 طالبًا من جامعتين مصريتين في 13 مقرر دراسي. أنشأ الطلاب 839 صفحة جديدة وعملوا على تطوير العديد من المقالات الأخرى في ربيع وصيف 2014. شاهد صور المؤتمر الاحتفالي الخامس على ويكيميديا كومنز.

كانت نسبة المشاركة النسائية الرائعة في برنامج ألا وهي ٨٨% من إجمالي الطلاب نجاحََا عظيمََا في حد ذاته حيث تلعب دورََا حيويََا في المساعدة على سد الفجوة بين الجنسين على الموسوعة العالمية ولكن ذلك لم يكن جهدهم الوحيد المبذول في هذا المجال. شهد الفصل الدراسي السابق بداية ظهور مقررات دراسية مخصصة للكتابة عن المرأة، في محاولة لتضييق الفجوة بين الجنسين على ويكيبيديا. تقول مي هاشم، قائدة ببرنامج ويكيبيديا للتعليم بجامعة عين شمس وصاحبة فكرة أول مقرر دراسي عن المرأة "أعتقد أن وجود نماذج مشرفة من الجنسين والكتابة عنها وإلقاء الضوء عليها يجب أن تكون رسالة ليستفيد غيرنا بخبراتهم، ولكن معظم مقالات الأعلام التي أراها عن شخصيات رجال، فإذا كنا سنبدأ مبادرة جديدة لماذا نكتب مقالات مماثلة بنفس الهدف، ولماذا لا نتخذ طريقََا جديدََا فعالََا أيضََا؟"

مي تؤمن أن النسبة العظيمة من الطالبات في برنامج مصر يجب أن تُستغل في تطوير محتوى ويكيبيديا حيث أن العديد من أولئك الطالبات يؤمنّ بوجود حقوق ومساحات متساوية للمرأة في المجتمع، وفي العادة تميل المرأة للكتابة عن المرأة. تضيف مي "لا أود أن أتناول الموضوع من وجهة نظر نسوية، ولكن المرأة يجب أن يكون لها نفس المكان في التاريخ مثلها مثل الرجل".

في الصيف الماضي كان لمتطوعي مصر فكرة تحفيز الطلاب للكتابة عن المرأة بتدشين مسابقة للكتابة بجوائز رمزية لأصحاب المساهمات الأعلى. الطلاب عادة لا يكونوا بنفس النشاط خلال الصيف مثلما يكونون خلال الفصل الدراسي حيث لا صفوف دراسية ولا مقابلات مع أساتذاتهم وحيث يسافر الكثير منهم لقضاء العطلات.

كانت الفكرة هي إيجاد حافز يرفع روح المنافسة بين المحررين الجدد حيث كانت المسابقة مخصصة لهم فاشترطت ألا تتعدى مساهمات المشترك 1500 تعديل على ويكيبيديا.

استطاعت مسابقة ويكي المرأة التي مولتها منحة من مؤسسة ويكيميديا واستمرت في الفترة منذ بداية سبتمبر وحتى نهاية أكتوبر 2014 أن تدعم برنامج ويكيبيديا للتعليم وكانت لها العديد من الإنجازات الأخرى منها:

30 مشترك من الإناث والذكور.
48% من المحتوى المضاف من طلاب البرنامج خلال ربيع وصيف 2014 رُفع خلال سبتمبر أي خلال فترة المسابقة.
28% من المحتوى الذي أضافه الطلاب خلال الفصل الدراسي جاء من مجموعات المرأة.
18 مقالة رشحها الطلاب لتكون مختارة وجيدة. وعلى الرغم من أن أقل من نصف هذه المقالات حصل على أصوات إيجابية ومتوقع لترشيحها النجاح وذلك لإن من رشحها مستخدمون جدد إلا أن هذا العدد القليل ما زال مؤشرََا جيدََا على الجودة.

لم تتحمس الطالبات فقط لفكرة سد الفجوة بين الجنسين والكتابة عن المرأة، فعلى الرغم من أن المسابقة كانت تستهدف المرأة في الأصل وكانت تهدف إلى استقطاب المزيد من المستخدمات إلى ويكيبيديا، إلا أنها كانت مفتوحة للجميع بما في ذلك المستخدمين الذكور ممن يرغب في الانضمام مما شجع الطلاب على منافسة زميلاتهم الفتيات على الجوائز الأولى.

أحمد يسري الفائز بالجائزة الأولى هو طالب وسفير ويكيبيديا الذي تعرف على تحرير ويكيبيديا لأول مرة من خلال برنامج التعليم في مصر. أحمد بدأ تطوعه بترجمة مقالات مختارة من ويكيبيديا الإنجليزية إلى شقيقتها العربية. وكانت أول مقالة طورها على ويكيبيديا عن تحديد النسل في الولايات المتحدة وهي الأن بفضل أحمد مقالة مختارة.

بمجرد ما أتقن أحمد أساسيات التحرير على ويكيبيديا بدأ في التطوع سفيرََا لويكيبيديا في كليته ليساعد زملائه الراغبين في أن يحذوا حذوه. أحمد لم يتردد في الانضمام إلى أول مقرر لويكيبيديا عن المرأة والمجتمع والذي طور فيه العديد من المحتوى المختار والذي تتوج مقالتين منه الآن النجمة الذهبية للمقالات المختارة واثنتين تتوجهما النجمة الفضية للمقالات الجيدة. طالع مقالات أحمد المختارة والجيدة على ويكيبيديا العربية: ميج ويتمان، وأسماء محفوظ، ومنال الشريف، ولطفية النادي.

وفي المركز الثاني أتى عبد الرحمن السقا المتطوع الآن سفيرََا لويكيبيديا ويبذل جهدََا كبيرََا لتعريف زملائه بجامعة الأزهر بويكيبيديا. وذهبت الجائزة الثالثة إلى حنان عبد الرحمن والرابعة إلى إسراء حلمي، وكلاهما طالبتين بجامعة عين شمس بدأتا تحرير ويكيبيديا مؤخرََا وشاركا بنشاط في المسابقة.

خلال خمسة فصول دراسية استطاع طلاب مصر إضافة كم ضخم من المحتوى العربي إلى ويكيبيديا وهو ما يشكل اليوم حوالي 3% من حجم الموسوعة العربية كاملة، كما تمكنوا من رفع جودتها بالعديد من المقالات المختارة والجيدة التي تمثل أكثر من 6% من المحتوى المميز على الموسوعة العربية. تمكن المتطوعون من إدارة برنامجهم وتطويره وتناقل قيادته من فصل دراسي لآخر. استطاع البرنامج التغلب على العديد من التحديات والاستمرار والتوسع لمقررات دراسية جديدة وجامعات أخرى بفضل جهود متطوعيه.
