Goals and measures of success

[edit]

Project goal

[edit]
This statement describes what will be accomplished if the project is successful.
The goal of this request, is to obtain funding for being able to stabilize our internal structure and functioning, as a second step after our start-up grant (report/approval), and bring us consolidation as an Organization. After this grant is executed, the next logical step would be to be able to develop a strategic plan, under the definition of what we want to acquire, and how we want to do so, constructing and defining our Mission, Vision and Values, as a local Chapter.
Under our Organizational consolidation, we want to be able to: decentralize the participation of our local volunteers, and to participate in Wikimedia conferences and activities, relevant to us in our local context, depending on our own ideas and planning; be able to promote our activities and projects, in relation with Wikimedia Foundation projects themselves; and continue to execute the projects that have been successful so far --or have potential to be--, being able of completing some other that have been put on hold, and implement new projects for our local community, specially trying to reach new editors and sympathizers that might be potential participants of our local organization.
Wikimedia Chile is entering a second phase of development. Last year, as an organization, we were not an entirely mature body. In this second stage, and following our legal recognition, we are facing new challenges and restructuring our past functioning processes, due to the experience gained especially during the second semester of 2012, where we organized the 2012 Iberoconf Summit, and the 2012 Wiki Loves Monuments Contest for Chile.

Measures of success

[edit]
Provide a list of measurable criteria will you use to determine if your project was successful. You will need to report on the success of your project according to these measures after your project is completed.
  • Completing our legal documentation and notary processes, related to the changes experimented by the organization during the acquisition of our legal recognition, and some processes derived from those changes.
  • Finishing some tasks determined by our bylaws.
  • Renewing our site domains.
  • Acquiring some fixed assets.
  • Executing the activities and projects planned.
  • Project: Presidents & Governors of Chile[1]: The project's objective is to seek, obtain, record and digitally publish birth and death certificates of the Presidents and Governors of Chile and make them digitally available in order to preserve historical data (and allow Chileans and foreigners that want to use them) through Wikimedia Commons, as well as complete historical information relevant to Chile. The estimate amount of certificates to acquire is 125.
  • Project: Official Speeches by Salvador Allende[2]: The Official Speeches of Salvador Allende (former president of Chile) is a project currently under development at Wikisource, supported by the Salvador Allende Foundation (FSA). FSA has in its collection about 280 speeches, which consist of the surviving transcripts of his official speeches, since the rest have been destroyed or are missing. We developed a pilot project, consisting in ten speeches donated by the FSA. The files, originally provided in .PDF format, were converted to DjVu, and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Afterwards the articles for the speeches were created in Wikisource, so they could be corrected and validated. We plan to launch this project in stages: The pilot project included 10 speeches. The second step would be liberating more speeches in a controlled way: 15 speeches in a first round, if that works well, another 25, to reach about 50 speeches in total. After examining the results, we will determine if this number can be increased (or if we runned short). The estimated amount of available speeches left is 270; our goal would be to leave only 230 in the shelf.
  • Project: Wikipedia in the Classroom: This is a new project for Wikimedia Chile (but is based on our prior experience with the Wikipedia in University Project, see below). The project goal is to organize an activity gathering schools interested in incorporating Wikipedia editing into curricular assignments, and afterwards build a strong relationship with one of them. It would be ideal to have at least one school with one complete grade working on this, aiming for a number of 40-80 students, and monitoring their editing retention.
  • Project: Wikipedia in University[3]: This would be the second version of this pilot project organized by Wikimedia Chile. The pilot project consisted of teaching law students in Coquimbo, from the Catholic University of the North, on editing Wikipedia. This class studying Legal History II created and wrote seven articles about the Chilean codification process from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century as a part of their regular curriculum. Since one of our volunteers was a teacher of this college, the purpose of this project is to move out of the “comfort zone” and seek two new universities which to present and develop this idea (preliminary contacts have been established). The initial goal would be to reach a similar amount of students per University (39 for the pilot project), and keep a similar or better percentage of editing retention (8%) -eventhough we know we cannot control this part- but within a new environment, which will make both experiences comparable.
  • Project: Wikimedia Chile Outreach: This is a new project for Wikimedia Chile, that could be divided in three main branches: The first one would be to organize an Editathon event by itself (the last one we organized was done after the Prize Ceremony of the Wiki Loves Monuments Contest 2012). This time we would like to have more attendees than the last Edit-a-thon we organized. The second branch would be to utilize a website called Meetup, to seek new supporters and volunteers, widening our scope of action. This would promote our activities in a way that hasn’t been used by Wikimedia Chile before, with the idea to bring fresh blood and a different perspective to the organization. The third branch would be to stimulate participants of activities by giving them t-shirts, and to spread the word of the foundation projects with booklets and brochures. These materials will also be used in the activities -organized by other peer organizations and institutions- that we are usually invited to participate. The general objective of this point is to bring about more supporters, volunteers and members to the organization. Since we have never tried combining all these elements together before, we have no concrete comparison point so far (with the exception of the first Edit-a-thon we organized).
  • Project: GLAM-Wiki Conference[4]: This would be the second version of the GLAM-Wiki Summit organized by Wikimedia Chile. The first version gathered universities and cultural institutions with community members from the Wikimedia Foundation projects and promoters of free knowledge in general. It was the first GLAM-Wiki conference conducted in Latin America. The first time we organized this event we were able to congregate 23 different institutions with a total of 57 attendees. We would like to reach this number at least, bringing new and more heterogeen institutions to participate (indeed this would be really nice), but more importantly we would like to establish long-term, strong relations. We know these goals are more subjective and hard to measure, but we think it would be the best outcome for an event of this kind.
  • Project: Wiki Loves Monuments Chile 2013[5][6]: This would be the second version of Wiki Love Monuments organized by Wikimedia Chile. During Wiki Loves Monuments Chile 2012, we were able to incorporate 4,082 new images to Wikimedia Commons, but more importantly, those images were uploaded by 330 users, many of them new editors brought to the community. We really want to beat these numbers, although we cannot assure it, but will try, since -at least- we have experience in our favour.
  • Project: Wikivoyage Photo Contest: This is a new project for Wikimedia Chile (but partially based on our prior experience with Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, see above). The idea emerged looking at the low activity that we have as a chapter (and as a country in general) during January and February -holiday season in Chile-, and the little knowledge in the community and the general public about this new project of the Foundation. Also, this would be a great way to take advantage of all the “machinery” in place for Wiki Loves Monuments and use it to our favor. The draft idea is to organize a contest -based on the success of WLM- where people can take pictures while on their vacations, but keeping it as simple as possible, with almost all the activities online (less human and economic resources), only one prize and a wider theme (travel destination images, maybe focused on National Parks -yet to be determined.-) On the other hand Chile has a list of about 800 national monuments. The list is brief and eventually will run out, making it harder to keep repeating WLM in a successful way- maybe not for the immediate future, but further on. We think this could be a good idea, not only for us, but for the Community as well. Of course, since we have no comparison point, the outcome of it would be considered successful.

Non-financial requirements

[edit]

Three sets of Wikimedia Foundation promotional material (stickers, pins, buttons, t-shirts, pencils, etc.), to be further discussed with Merchandising Department.

Resources

[edit]

Wikimedia Chile is a chapter recognized by the WMF and local authorities, developing programs to promote the mission of the Fundation since 2011.

Impact

[edit]

This section will describe how the proposed project is related to the Wikimedia mission and Wikimedia's strategic priorities. It will also provide information about other benefits to Wikimedia communities.

Fit to strategy

[edit]
How will this project support the key organizational objectives of,
Stabilize Infrastructure
  • Expand public awareness and support for the Wikimedia movement.

  • Spread information about Wikimedia’s mission, vision, values and practices. Help people better understand our work, and motivate them to help us do it.
  • Achieve organizational maturity and financial sustainability
Increase Participation and Reach
  • Encourage the health and growth of Wikimedia communities and the projects they sustain.
  • Support the recruitment and acculturation of newer contributors by encouraging a welcoming environment on the Wikimedia projects, as well as supporting community leaders who are eager to serve as recruiters, guides and mentors for newer volunteers.

  • Encourage diversity by conducting outreach among groups that have the potential to bring new expertise to the projects, as well as by supporting leaders from underrepresented groups in their efforts to cultivate new members from within their communities.

  • Support offline and social events to increase community cohesion and commitment to the projects.

  • Increase participation, fostering the use of Wikimedia projects by GLAM and Education programs.
  • Expand Wikimedia’s global footprint through catalytic investments and chapter support.
  • Facilitate community efforts to create organizational models and structures that support the Wikimedia projects.
  • Support volunteer initiatives that fuel the growth of communities and projects around the world, including meet-ups, public outreach activities and other volunteer innovations.

Improve Quality
  • Provide support to the Wikimedia movement in the development of institutional partnerships and alliances.
  • Provide project funding for efforts to connect Wikimedia projects with the work of institutions of culture and learning.
  • Give global visibility to these efforts through our communication channels.
  • Develop and maintain documentation of best practices, blueprints, standards, and metrics associated with institutional partnerships.

Benefits

[edit]
If your project will benefit a specific online community, please list that here. For example, English Wiktionary.
  • This project will benefit the Spanish Wikipedia, as we expect to improve the quality of existing articles and the creation of new ones, through increasing the number of new editors, and old editors with more tools.
  • This project will benefit Wikimedia Commons, as we expect to improve the quantity of uploaded material, through the uploading of original material either provided by the government or donated by private institutions, and the massive upload of new images generated by the participation in the WLM 2013 contest and a Wikivoyage photo contest.
  • This project will benefit Spanish Wikisource, as we expect to transcribe the written material uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, increasing the material available, and perpetuating its content in an easy readable way.
  • This project will benefit Spanish Wikivoyage, as we expect to improve the number and quality of articles, due to the organization of a photo contest that will bring new material from and for editors.
Provide a brief statement (about 1 paragraph) about how your project is related to other work in the Wikimedia movement. Does your project fit into a work area such as GLAM, Education, Organization Development, Editor Retention, or Outreach?
  • This project will cross a serial of different Wikimedia initiatives, at different levels. Almost half of the bugdet for programs will directly go to GLAM initiatives, including some derivative areas as outreach and education. We have also projected specific projects for Education and Outreach. Administrative and participation on conferences will help the chapter to stay healthy and to participate actively in the Wikimedia movement.
If successful, does your project have the potential to be replicated successfully by other individuals, groups, or organizations? Please explain how in 1 - 2 sentences.
  • Yes, in the understanding that other chapters eventually will be in the same pathway and/or stage of development of Wikimedia Chile. This annual program plan reflects the administrative and programs expenses expected for a chapter that has succesfully accomplished the initial procedures to obtaining recognition from local authorities. Additionally, some of the text and images of printed materials might be used for other Spanish speaking chapters or local groups.
Please list any other benefits that this project will produce.
