Talk:Wikimania 2013 bids/Anchorage

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

uh-oh[edit]

I may have waited far too long to start this ball rolling. Bids need to be together in just a few weeks, about the time I was planning to go to Anchorage and talk to potential hosts, sponsors, etc. Unless there is a substantial groundswell of support form other Alaskans pretty much right now this will probably have to be postponed and re-cast for 2013. I guess I was naive to think a year and a half was enough of a head start to plan something like this. Beeblebrox 07:58, 22 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

...maybe it's not as horrible as all that, bid creation ends Jan 13th, but the bid doesn't have to be finalized till Feb. 10. That leaves some time to get it together if we can just have something that looks like a decent bid in a few weeks. I'm hoping I'm not just talking to myself here. GLAM support[edit]

Following the highly successful developments of the GLAM collaboration between various wikimedia platforms and the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum sector, I would be interested to know what GLAM organisations have committed themselves to your bid? I actually don't have any solid commitments from anyone yet. I'm not familiar with GLAM but it sounds like an excellent resource. Beeblebrox 00:51, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Scratched[edit]

Re-srtarting, aiming for 2013, this got going too late to compete. Hoping I can get some other users involved in the next few months. Beeblebrox 20:26, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Weaknesses with the location[edit]

Anchorage would be an interesting place to host Wikimania, but even if it is a very good bid, I think the main problem it will face is the argument that Wikimania should move around every year, and the drafters will need a response to this. Concerns are likely to be raised that Wikimania will have just been held in the same country the year before in Washington DC, even if DC is a long way from Alaska. If this bid wins it will the third time the US has hosted Wikimania, with no other country having hosted it more than once, and as w:Wikimania#Overview highlights, will also be the first time that Wikimania will have been held on the same continent twice in a row. Ramadan 2013[edit]

Hi, based on discussions on foundation-l, several people think avoiding Ramadan will encourage participation from the middle east and other muslim regions since a lot of practicing muslims will not travel during Ramadan, Ramadan 2013 will happen between July 9 and August 7, are you planning to take that into account? --Shipmaster 22:45, 5 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2012 Washington[edit]

Sorry guys - but 2012 is the Wikimania in Washington D.C. - already the second time since 2005 in the USA. For me it's impossible, that in 2013 it's again in the USA. Marcus Cyron 09:27, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
