My name is Jesse. If you have questions or comments, feel free to post them below or send me an email.

I was an active editor and administrator on various wikis many years ago, but nowadays I quietly write scripts and make the occasional edit. My contributions are typically to technical development, with the occasional copyedit or new content. I am a steward for the Wikimedia Foundation, an observer of the language committee, and maintain a few scripts and bots. Historically, I was on the language committee in 2006–2011 and the Board elections committee in 2008 and 2009. I edit various wikis, but the English Wikisource and Meta are my main wikis.

Shanel is my beloved.

Stalktoy bug report [edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (filed toolserver bug ticket). If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

The pie charts on stalktoy are slightly misconfigured.

  • For content projects such as Wikipedia and Wiktionary, the domain format is language-code.wikipedia.org.
  • However, for chapter and community wikis, the format is country-code.wikimedia.org.

Hence:

  • uk.wikimedia.org is actually Wikimedia United Kingdom (and should be classified as en or multilingual or other);
  • Wikimedia Ukraine is ua.wikimedia.org instead.

See for example [1]. Deryck C. 10:02, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Deryck. Thanks for pointing that out; the errors are in the toolserver database, so I'll look into it and file a bug with the toolserver people this week. —Pathoschild 02:45, 04 July 2012 (UTC)
I looked into this and filed a toolserver bug ticket. —Pathoschild 19:44, 01 September 2012 (UTC)

Request for a script that allows locking accounts en masse [edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (see feature tickets for HTTPS links, hard !gblocking, and updating the steward list). If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

Hello Pathoschild. If you have time, interest, etc. it'd be good if a script like MediaWiki:Gadget-massblock.js / MediaWiki:Gadget-globalmassblock.js but for CentralAuth. We're getting flooded by spambots and the process of going to CA, write the name, select the box, the reason and click for sometimes more than 20 times is getting really tedious. If such a script could be created that'd be great. Regards, — MA (audiencia) 14:35, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Marco. You can do this with StewardBot by typing !lock username in IRC (it will automatically do the rest). If you have a list of accounts to lock, you can also do !withlist http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List > lock. Optionally (using the !stab command), it can block them on every wiki and notify you of any edits that haven't been reverted. The bot has configurable permissions: by default only you (the bot operator) can lock an account, and you can whitelist users who can request locks (so you just do !commit request# to execute the requests, or even !commit #:# to commit a range of requests at once).
The bot is open-source and you can run it yourself if you have python, but it hasn't been maintained recently and may need to be updated. I'll look into it this weekend. —Pathoschild 15:42, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. I knew about stewardbot which is indeed a very good tool. However it seems I need IRCLib instaled to run it and each time I've tried to install it results in a complete dissaster. I'll try again and see what happens. I thank you in advance for the updates. Best regards. — MA (audiencia) 18:10, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Hello again. I finaly got it working but just partially because when I want to set myself on the ACCESS_OPERATOR in the DefaultSettings.py file, when I restart the bot and start __init__ again, it crashes and does not restart again. I just modified your cloak with mine, but it doesn't work anymore. I'm probably doing something bad. Regards. — MA (audiencia) 21:26, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
I spoke too soon it seems. It works for now and did tested a couple of actions with it. In the planned updates you are going to do, may I suggest to add support for https:// conection to the wiki? Also, a !gblock > address > reason > hard for global hardblocks and an update of the whitelist of users and stewards. Best regards and thank you for your help. — MA (audiencia) 21:51, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into adding those features next time I work on stewbot (I filed feature tickets for HTTPS links, hard !gblocking, and updating the steward list). —Pathoschild 19:53, 01 September 2012 (UTC)

Need help [edit]

Hello Pathoschild. I'm the bureaucrat of the KRC WIKIPEDIA. The user Avocato recently requested renaming his accounts, but I cannot rename them. Could you help me? Thanks. --Iltever (talk) 16:55, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello Iltever. You cannot rename محمد الجداوي to Avocato because Avocato is already registered. You'll first need to rename Avocato to something else (like "Avocato2") to free the name. —Pathoschild 19:58, 01 September 2012 (UTC)

CrossBlock [edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (merged into Stalktoy). If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

Hi. It seems that this tool doesn't work. I'm getting: Fatal error: Call to undefined method IP::valid() in /home/pathoschild/public_html/crossblock/index.php on line 86. micki 11:34, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi micki. That script isn't compatible with the recent Wikimedia IPv6 migration, which is why you're getting the error. I merged the script into Stalktoy and added an error. I didn't port over the block links since they don't seem to be used much; let me know if you want them back. —Pathoschild 20:10, 01 September 2012 (UTC)

Simple list of wikis per user, and maybe with local bureaucrat (y/n) [edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (see feature ticket). If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

Not sure whether it is something that may be applicable for stalktoy or not.

I am trying to generate a simple list of wikis where a user has accounts as they are asking for a rename, however, all lists, apart from mergeaccount, show other frippery. That got me to thinking whether stalktoy would be able to handle a column that could be turned on and off that showed local bureaucrats (per row) to manage moves, and otherwise stewards to undertake. From there we could point the respective users to the tool with the column turned on, and do those where we need to do so. Just thoughts. Hell, the ability to prepare two divided lists of Stewards vs Local 'crats would be helpful. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:52, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi billinghurst. It's a good idea, but I don't know when I'll have time to add that feature. I created a feature ticket to track implementation in the meantime. (The tool is open-source if anyone else wants to work on it.) —Pathoschild 20:17, 01 September 2012 (UTC)

Editor wiki [edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

Hi. Sj mentioned that you might be someone I should talk with concerning this idea.

First, what do you think about it, second, what implementation pitfalls do you think we will we need to look at, and also, as someone who deals with notifications of various projects what do you think of this from that perspective as well (and of course any other things you can think of : ) - Jc37 (talk) 19:23, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jc37. It's a very interesting idea and there are precedents on other sites (e.g., meta.stackoverflow.com). However, I think closing the local namespaces would be a significant enough change that there would be a lot of resistance. As an intermediate solution, I would suggest an approach similar to Commons files: when viewing a user page you would see the local user page if it exists, else you would see the global page. For example, File:Example.png currently shows the content of commons:File:Example.png (including templates). There don't seem to be many technical hurdles, since this is already working for file pages. —Pathoschild 20:42, 02 December 2012 (UTC)

Standard bot policy on ru.wikivoyage [edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (done). If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

Hi Jesse. On Russian Wikivoyage we completed the two-week vote on the standard bot policy (four users voted, which is the our standard active population interested in the maintenance), the vote is here. I created a redirect from Wikivoyage:Bot policy, added a line on our community portal (where provisionally the requests will be handled), and updated this table. However, I can not do the rest: the Wikivoyage template shows up as red, presumably because we are the first Wikivoyage project to implement any bot policy, and also I can not add us to Global bots wikiset. Would you please complete the request. Thanks.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:26, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Ymblanter. I added wikivoyage to the wikiset and template. —Pathoschild 21:45, 02 December 2012 (UTC)

I pronounce it more like this fr-fr pronunciation, though I've often hear it pronounced like that. Why do you ask — aren't you from Québec too? :) —Pathoschild 00:20, 06 December 2012 (UTC)

Stewardbot problem [edit]

Hello Pathoschild. I've downloaded the files to run your bot recently in order to simplify some things (deletions, blocks etc.), however, it doesn't work properly and I didn't figure out the problem, although I'm quite sure I've set __config__.py rightly. Whenever I run __init__.py from the prompt command of Windows, it seems as if it's going to start, but then, if I try to type from an IRC channel for example this string !delete hello@xwiki > No longer needed, the bot just gives me back "No" (that's I'm not allowed to perform these kind of actions). Do you have any idea about it? --Frigotoni ...i'm here; 16:14, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

The cause is bound to be a configuration error in the wiki_names_by_level field. Snowolf How can I help? 19:31, 14 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm quite sure though that the __config__.py I compiled is alike as this one. Where's the mistake then? Or maybe have I to change something else? --Frigotoni ...i'm here; 13:30, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Frigotoni. This is a known issue with the user configuration. For now you must also update the config.irc.users_by_level setting, possibly by copying the code from the "Generated configuration" section of DefaultConfig.py. (It's autogenerated before your __config__.py settings.) —Pathoschild 03:39, 17 December 2012 (UTC)
Sounds good now! Thank you :) --Frigotoni ...i'm here; 15:50, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

gusersearch - possible to limit the regression [edit]

Gday P/child. With gusersearch might it be possible to have an option so that it only regresses through accounts for a shorter time period? eg. a month. Many of the spambots we can see the regex patterns appear with a week or two, and anyway, if it is more than a month old, it is less likely to need to be locked anyway. I am looking to have something that is not going to time out toolserver, which is happening far too regularly. Thanks if that is possible. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:26, 25 December 2012 (UTC)

BTW I am trying to run a regex like [a-z]{4}[0-9][a-z]{3}[0-9]{2} and it becomes a dummy spit exercise for poor TS. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:29, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
Or could we run the regex for a maximum time that exits gracefully before we get "Exception: SQLSTATE[70100]: <<Unknown error>>: 1317 Query execution was interrupted"billinghurst sDrewth 13:44, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi Billinghurst. I think the date ranges are a good idea. I don't have toolserver access during the holidays, but I created a tracking ticket you can watch for updates. —Pathoschild 04:18, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
We are having another burst of weird and wonderfuls (6u3nznt3s8y2) that could do well with a limited period regex. Is there any progress? The github link doesn't showing any change. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:09, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
Hello billinghurst. I'll take a look this week. —Pathoschild 04:18, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
You can now pass a lower date limit to the script (see example), but I've hidden the feature since it's a pretty major tradeoff so far. It can significantly speed up queries that would take a long time, but also slow down queries that would take little time. I'll need to look into more optimal ways to do it before adding it to the UI. —Pathoschild 01:27, 01 May 2013 (UTC)

Bot generating User page [edit]

Sorry to bother you . I was wondering how I can start or change a user page for me (User:Ghaly) and for my bot (User:GhalyBot) using a bot script. It is taking a very long time to try to do that manually. Many thanks. --Ghaly (talk) 15:12, 29 December 2012 (UTC)

Stalktoy bug? [edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered. If you have a new comment, place it just below the box.

Hi there,

I noticed that stalktoy is guessing that my oldest account is eswiki, even though both my ptwiki and my eswiki accounts have been registered pre-2005, and among those:

  1. ptwiki is my home wiki
  2. ptwiki the one where I have the most edits
  3. ptwiki is the one where the first edit is the oldest: http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Waldir?dir=prev&limit=1 vs http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Waldir?dir=prev&limit=1

I undestand that per the code at lines 548-551, #1 should suffice to set ptwiki as the oldest wiki (even though I believe #3 should be used instead for this estimation). However, that's not the case. Why is that happening, and can it be fixed?

Thanks, Waldir (talk) 05:39, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Maybe stalktoy could do a better guesswork, but the real problem here is that the database field containing the registation date was populated by WMF only on the English Wikipedia: you should file a bug or (more probably) nag people around about the existing bug. --Nemo 07:30, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Wait—so there are logs? Why didn't they populate the database of the other wikis? Where's the existing bug? Are there relevant discussion pages/mailing list threads that people interested in this should consult? --Waldir (talk) 21:28, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Stalktoy should correctly choose your home wiki now; the error was caused by a minor comparison bug. —Pathoschild 03:48, 09 February 2013 (UTC)
I'm afraid not. It now says "Oldest account on en.wikipedia.org (2005-02-02 03:02)". Btw, would it be feasible to use criterion #3 above to disambiguate between two (or more) wikis without user creation logs, if none of them is the home wiki? Or is that query too resource-consuming? --Waldir (talk) 18:22, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
I think checking the latest oldest edit would be too resource-consuming, but I'll look at tweaking the guess method this weekend. The best long-term solution would be to add the edit-based registration dates to the user tables, as Nemo mentioned; see bug #18638 and bug #22097. —Pathoschild 02:42, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Fixed. Checking the latest oldest edit is too resource-consuming, but I improved the guess method. —Pathoschild 18:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the fix and for the pointer to the relevant bugs. I also edited your messages above to reflect the fact that "latest" usually means the most recent, not the most ancient (assuming that's what you meant). --Waldir (talk) 22:17, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Polish Wikivoyage user js files [edit]

Hi

You have created files in Wikipedysta namespace that doesn't exist in the Polish Wikivoyage. The corresponding namespace is Użytkownik. So I assume it doesn't work as intended.

Kpjas (talk) 08:50, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Kpjas. I'll look into it tonight and correct any pages in the wrong namespace. —Pathoschild 13:51, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
I fixed the pages and paused the bot while I look for a way to guarantee it doesn't happen again. —Pathoschild 03:54, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

—Pathoschild 03:53, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

global js on closed wikis [edit]

wikt:ik:Special:RecentChanges Would it be worthwhile updating your script so that it didn't edit on closed wikis? — billinghurst sDrewth 05:34, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Billinghurst. Thanks for spotting that; the bot shouldn't edit closed wikis, but that one got through. I submitted a patch to pywikipediabot to fix this. —Pathoschild 00:18, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Request: Global Bots for English Wikivoyage [edit]

Hello - your name was listed as the contact for Bot_policy/Implementation#Implementation. I am a bureaucrat on English Wikivoyage, which has gone through the required steps for allowing global bots:

I did not complete the following two steps, the first because I wasn't sure what the "maintenance" column meant, and the second because I'm not a steward - I'm hopeful you can help me out with these:

  • Update the list below, as well as Template:Bot_policy.
  • As a steward, add the wiki to the Global bots wikiset.

Please let me know if there is anything else that needs to be done to enable global bots on English Wikivoyage. Thanks! -- Ryan • (talk) • 05:51, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi Ryan. I enabled global bots on the English Wikivoyage. :) —Pathoschild 01:05, 23 February 2013 (UTC)

Chat about Bot Policy and Global Bots on various WP/WM projects [edit]

Hello. My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am an en.wikipedian and have spent the last two years researching bots on WP/WM projects (primarily en.wikipedia). I'm wondering if you might be available to chat with me (IRC or IM, Skype, Gchat, phone...whatever works best for you) about your experiences and knowledge of the Meta Bot Policy and Global Bots, as I am beginning to learn about bots beyond my home project. I'd greatly appreciate your time and expertise, as it looks like you were involved in the formation of these policies and guidelines.

You can learn more about me and download my dissertation here, and please let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to leave a response here, on my en.wp Talk page, or email me here if you have some time to chat, and thank you in advance for your consideration.

This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards at both the University of Oregon and Endicott College. (Feel free to request a copy of those protocols). UOJComm (talk) 00:58, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello Randall. You can find me in Wikimedia-related IRC channels like #wikimediaconnect and #wikimedia-stewardsconnect. I'm available most evenings (19h–00h EST); feel free to contact me on IRC, or let me know a convenient time and I'll make sure I'm online then. —Pathoschild 00:26, 04 March 2013 (UTC)
Hello and thank you for the reply. I appreciate your time and input. Could we plan on this Thursday (3/7) at 20:00EST on IRC? UOJComm (talk) 14:33, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
Would Friday at the same time be okay? —Pathoschild 06:59, 07 March 2013 (UTC)
Friday evening would be a maybe for me. Would you be on IRC regardless? If so, I can find you if I am home at that time and it will work for me. Otherwise, we could definitely reschedule for next week at that time (I'm free any night except Tuesday...I'm interviewing another bot op that night). Thanks again! UOJComm (talk) 17:44, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
I should be. Friday or next week is fine with me, or you can just poke me when you see me online. —Pathoschild 03:18, 08 March 2013 (UTC)
Hello again. I will look for you on IRC this week, but we don't hook up, can we plan on this Wednesday evening (3/13) at 8pm EST? Thanks... UOJComm (talk) 02:08, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Yep, that time should be fine. —Pathoschild 04:11, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Hello again. Just confirming our chat for tonight at 8pm EST. My IRC name is UOJComm, and I will be in #wikimedia-tech (or I can find you on another channel if you prefer). Thanks... UOJComm (talk) 14:33, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Hello Pathoschild. I don't seem to see you in any of these IRC channels. Perhaps tonight didn't end up working for you? Please let me know what night may be better for you (and I'll be on IRC for a bit longer). UOJComm (talk) 00:17, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Hello again. Just wanted to check that we're chatting tonight (now-ish) at 8pm? UOJComm (talk) 00:02, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

CA conflict detection [edit]

Just letting you know that we now should have optional conflict detection on account locks. Snowolf How can I help? 11:58, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. —Pathoschild 00:26, 04 March 2013 (UTC)

Question [edit]

Greetings Steward.

User:DerHexer said that you're the one to see with regards to questions about restrictions for voting in Steward Elections. [2] Long story short I wanted to find out the reasons for the rule that there must have been 600 edits before November 2012. I've been to Snowolf who pointed me towards DerHexer who now says you'll have an idea, Can you shed any light on my question please? Thank you. MIVP - (Can I Help?) - (HeadQuarters) 12:48, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello MIVP. The edit requirements for voters were first introduced in the 2009 elections following a discussion about suffrage. Derived from the 2008 Board elections rules, the tightened requirements were intended to make it harder to manipulate the elections by creating multiple accounts. —Pathoschild 02:01, 04 March 2013 (UTC)

That makes sense to me. I already have over 600 edits on en wikipedia plus my Meta page so i'm all set I think. Next year MI, next year, heh. Thank you kindly. MIVP - (Can I Help?) - (HeadQuarters) 09:42, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Twinkle [edit]

I make a request if you can not do it through the bot? --Kolega2357 (talk) 21:10, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello Kolega2357. Don't worry — I'll take care of your Synchbot request soon. —Pathoschild 21:13, 24 March 2013 (UTC)

Fundraising translation feedback [edit]

Hey Pathoschild,

I wanted to ask for your help. As you may be aware we have been running banners on many language wikis. We have a lot of new content this year and I really want to conduct a thorough review of our translations. This is a combination of feedback from the community, readers, donors as well as those with professional translator experience. This will help us ensure the highest quality of translations used in our messaging.

To help us out with this I wonder if you would be willing to give us feedback in french using This Link

Simply follow the simple instructions on that page and if you have any questions feel free to contact me on my talk page.

Many Thanks

Toolserver#Catanalysis [edit]

Could you please check whether this tool is still working? Thanks,--Cheers! (talk) 10:24, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello Cheers. The tool is working for me. Are you getting an error message? —Pathoschild 12:49, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

#wikimedia-privacy / #wikimedia-checkuser access request [edit]

Hi. I've been appointed to the enwiki Audit Subcommittee. I understand I'm supposed to request access to the #wikimedia-privacy and #wikimedia-checkuser IRC channels, and that you're one of the people who can help me with this. Could you, please? Thanks. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 04:48, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello Richwales. I see DerHexer has taken care of it. —Pathoschild 01:55, 01 May 2013 (UTC)
Indeed. Thanks for getting back to me. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 05:42, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
