How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

Virtually

Brief[edit]

The Wikimania conference is an annual meeting held by the Wikimedia Foundation to bring together volunteers and people working within its platforms in a global event. The conference is usually organized in one of the countries of the world, until 2020, until COVID-19 pandemic happened.

First virtual Wikimania conference was held in 2021 on REMO platform. There were some in-person meetings in some countries of the world with adherence to social distancing and meeting rules within the health conditions imposed by countries around the world.

The Wikimania conference was held again virtually this year (2022) from 11 to 14 August. The conference was held on Pheedloop virtual portal. In addition to some in-person reunions around the world.

Each conference is dedicated to a specific theme, while 2022 took “festival” theme as a subject for it. The meetings this year were held in virtual “tents”, the conference were held in 3 tents, in addition to “Lobby” and “Network”.

This year the conference suffered from technical and organizational issues, as the opening session was delayed by about 20 minutes. But there was an alternative YouTube platform, but another problem arose, as the translation was not possible, and if it existed, it was difficult to access at first.

The first day was completed by moving between technical and organizational problems, but there were many important topics on this day, such as talking about the movement strategy, which was presented in the first tent, the organizational entrance to wiki Love monuments, etc.

The third and fourth days continued at the same level. The conference was good in general, but it needs more organization and experience of tools, especially considering the presence of a good number and considering changes that may occur, such as the delay of one session does not affect the next session or does not interrupt the conversation due to the end of the session time by default (this happened in the wiki human rights session for example).

The second day started better technically, but a sustainable problem appeared in the Pheedloop platform, as it did not support the auto-start of sessions and the organizers had to constantly remind pressing the start button to watch the session, and the translation on a separate page. Personally, the translation did not appear when pressing the hot air balloon, but I had to go to the Wikimania help page on the meta to activate the translation, but in any case, its presence on a separate page and not activating it in one of the features of the video clip was a technical loophole in a global and high-level conference like Wikimania.

For me, I had attended the conference virtually, and I liked many sessions, some of them are The Grand Tour of Wikimedia and do not cite it, but write it down, what do the professors think about Wikipedia

The new problem which I can see it now, is that the Interpretation is not provided to YouTube or commons, so that the sessions are only available in the speaker speaking language.

I communicated with colleagues through social networks and through meeting platforms such as Zoom, Jitsi and Pheedloop.
