From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

This is a closed translation request.

Thanks for volunteering to translate the Wikipedia Editors Survey! We truly appreciate your willingness to help us with the translation process. If you have any questions while translating, feel free to leave them on the talk page.

Please keep in mind that the deadline for completing translations is March 23rd.

All translations need to be done by March 23 so we can start programming the survey in order to field it by March end.

Purpose

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation is requesting your assistance to translate a survey that will help us to better understand the Wikipedia editing community.

Tips

[edit]

Here are few key things to remember when translating the survey. These are just here to guide you and help you; some tips may not be applicable in your language.

  • Please stick to the original meaning as much as possible, but as we are all aware it is sometimes hard to find words that have the exact meaning and context in another language, but please try and be as true to the original meaning as possible.
  • Avoid negatives. As much as possible don’t use negative words in the sentences. For example, in English “unwelcome” is a better word for a survey question than “not welcome.”
  • There are some words that are capitalized in the survey questions, it is done to ensure that respondents are able to read the key difference among similar questions. For example, questions 1a &1b are about contributions, while q2a & 2b are about only reading. In cases like these capitalize words that would help respondents differentiate among similar questions.
  • Avoid any value laden or strong words, try and use words that have a more neutral tone. For example, in English harassment is a better word than discrimination.
  • Avoid leading questions. Don’t make the respondents feel that one option is better or popular than the other.
  • Keep the same question numbers, please don’t translate the numerals. Keep them D1, q1, q2 etc. It is very important to do this for the analysis.
  • Please don’t translate the programming instructions like ask D1a if D1=0. Only translate the body of the questionnaire. There is a good chance the person programming the survey will not be able to understand the translated questionnaire. It will ensure that they don’t get confused.

Programmer Notes

[edit]

A few people have asked about the programmer's notes, so we've included them below. These notes explain how the survey is supposed to be setup, and do not require translations. They are just here for your reference.

  • D8a is only asked if D8=1 ("yes").
  • For Q1b and Q2b, the options will be the ones the user selected in Q1a and Q2a.
  • Q7a is only asked if the respondent said they started editing before 2009 in D1a.
  • Q7b is only asked if Q7a=1 ("less active").
  • Q7c is only asked if Q7A=2,3 ("no change", "more active").
  • Q8b is only asked if 8a(d)=1 (owns "a mobile or cellular phone").
  • Q10 is only asked if people said yes to those activities in Q9.
  • Q12 is only asked if respondent indicated they owned a iPod/MP3 player or cellphone (Q8a(d) & Q8a(e)=1).
  • For Q19 only, only the options that the respondent said they experienced in Q18a and Q18b will be listed.
  • Q25 is only asked if D10=0 ("female").
  • D15b and D15b2 are only asked if D15a=1 ("yes").
  • D15b3 is only asked if D15b2=1 ("yes").
  • D15c is only asked if D15a=0 ("no").
  • D16a is only asked if D16=1 ("yes").
  • D17a is only asked if D17=0 ("no").
  • D18a is only asked if D17a(f)=1 ("I have never heard of these elections").
  • D19a is only asked if D19=0 ("no").
  • D22b is only asked if D22a=1 ("yes").
