JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)[edit]

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Fundraising numbers[edit]

I think you might be interested in User:WhatamIdoing/WMF revenue. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:55, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the stats, I had not seen them before.
To be honest, my question for the Board Elections is intentionally open ended because I did not want to take a stance on this based purely on what I know yet. I know there is "some" stopping point for fundraising before it becomes too much, and there are "some" failures in our projects, even if people disagree on what/which ones. I'd rather ask prospective board members real questions about our projects than have another question filled with political-speak. Soni (talk) 18:52, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm concerned that your question contains misinformation. WMF fundraising has not "grown by 4x" over the last 10 years. Revenue has grown by 180% over the last ten years if you account for inflation, and by 270% if you don't. (Also, you linked to 2021–2022, and that's not the most recent year.)
There has been a lot of misinformation about the WMF's budget over the years. For example, you may have seen people claiming that "Internet hosting costs" are all it really takes to keep the wikis online, so 99% of the WMF's budget is unnecessary. This is the equivalent of saying that so long as you pay your phone/internet bill, you don't need hardware, software, wifi, router, or anything else to use the internet. It's not true, but the misinformation spreads when people ought to be asking things like "Realistically, how much would it take to keep the wikis online, if we did nothing else?" or "What exactly is included in this expense line item for 'internet hosting costs'?" WhatamIdoing (talk) 19:30, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I agree with your second paragraph. But I am very much making none of those claims. There are people who say "The budget is already too big, we need to stop now" but that wasn't my question at all. It's open ended and intended to ask "There is 'some' point at which we slow down. What is that point according to you?", very much a different ask. And something I'd hope all Board members be able to feasibly answer.
As for your first paragraph, you're right I did link the wrong link. Let me doublecheck where I got my 4x numbers from, and edit the question with the right percentage if needed. Soni (talk) 20:05, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
While overall expenses increase each year, they are increasing more slowly each year, and are currently not much above the inflation rate.
The slowdown started three years ago. They had a year of big growth, followed by increasingly small amounts of growth since then. AIUI this was one of the Board's goals when they hired the current CEO. The current fiscal year's budget projected a 2% increase in revenue, which after account for inflation (about 3.5% in 2023), basically means having less revenue than the year before. Expenses for the next year are planned to go up by 5%, which means about 1.5% of actual purchasing power.
Because of the effects of inflation, "staying the same" is always going to look like "getting bigger". What we could buy for $1 in 2013 now costs $1.30 (on average). WhatamIdoing (talk) 00:17, 2 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
