Automatic suggestions for categories

The image description is: "Railjet 793 on the Tauern Railway south of Bad Hofgastein.". The categories of this image are: "Bad Hofgastein", "ÖBB Railjet control cars" and "Tauern Railway in Salzburg (state)"
  • Problem: It takes too much time to find suitable categories for images.
  • Who would benefit: Everyone who categorises images.
  • Proposed solution: Utilising the position data and the image description, categories which could be fitting to an image should be automatically suggested. This mechanism should i.e. search for images that were taken nearby in order to use the categories added to these images and analyse the image description in order to suggest categories. In the example added to this suggestion, all of the categories could have been suggested using the image description simply by suggesting categories whose name appears in the image description. An optimisation would be possible by using the position data, i.e. for suggesting the subcategory "Tauern Railway in Salzburg (State)" instead of the main category "Tauern Railway". Adding categories manually simply takes time. In general, i'd suggest that improvements to image uploading and handling should be made available not only for the upload client on Commons, but also for the Lightroom plugin.

Discussion[edit]

We are exploring a similar feature as part of Structured Data on Commons. However, current ideas revolve around the concept of suggested "tags", which will be structured "depicts" properties which in turn reference Wikidata items. We'll look into expanding the functionality for categories as well, although it's not a priority at the moment. RIsler (WMF) (talk) 19:09, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
