About the submission

[edit]
Title of the submission

Translating MediaWiki into three Saami languages (Northern, Inari, and Skolt Saami)

Type of submission
  • Presentation – 20–25 minute presentation. This time includes questions from the audience.
Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

Edit(!), (to) edit, or (an) edit? Change: change what exactly? Even yes and no can be problematic. Simple strings in MediaWiki are not as easy to translate as it seems at first glance. Yet translating MediaWiki is often one of the first things new language communities are expected to do.

In this presentation, I will discuss some of the challenges translators have faced when translating MediaWiki into Northern, Inari, and Skolt Saami, the solutions they have come up with for them, and how MediaWiki could be even further improved to make it easier for language communities to translate.

Theme of session
  • Momentum Unleashed: Overcoming Barriers, Igniting Progress;
What will attendees take away from this session?

I'm hoping that language communities will find that they are not alone in the baffling world of translating MediaWiki and that the people responsible for these strings will provide better documentation as to what they refer to and update current documentation and inter-string links.
