References to existing page in other language, instead of just showing missing page in current language

NoN Withdrawn by proposer

  • Problem: Articles sometime exist in a large language (e.g. English), but are missing in a small language (e.g. Danish). When such a missing article is referenced in a small language, then the link just leads to a page for creation of the missing article This is rather useless when wanting to read about the subject. Many users can read article in multiple languages, and even seeing the images and article contents in an unknown language is often more useful than getting a page for creating an article about a subject that the reader would rather learn something about. An example is the Danish page about Apollo 11 (DA), where the article about "National Air and Space Museum" is not written yet, in which case a link to the English article at National Air and Space Museum (EN) would be useful.
  • Who would benefit: In particular readers in smaller languages, where some articles are not created yet.
  • Proposed solution: Allow creation of link to an article in another language. The Wiki system could then present a link to the top article in any language, a link to an article in a language preferred by the user.

Are you aware of the interlanguage link template? en:Template:Interlanguage link? This displays both a red link (invitation to create), and a link to an article in the language specified. The foreign-language link disappeared when the article is created. The template exists in 85 languages, including in Danish. Femke (talk) 18:22, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot; I was not aware of that template. I have applied it to the Danish article, and it already looks much better. That template is actually an answer to my suggestion, so I guess that I should delete my suggestion. However, I don't know how to do that, since simply deleting the text does not work (gives an warning about wrong behaviour). MortenZdk (talk) 19:22, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It will be archived by the team sometime in the next couple weeks before voting starts. Izno (talk) 22:42, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
