Description

Clonard, County Meath, Ireland


Statue of St. Finian, created by the Italian workshop Studi Nicoli, founded by the sculptor Carlo Nicoli. The inscription at the front reads: St. Finian was born 454 A.D. He was educated by St. David in Wales. He founded his monastery at Clonard, and died 12th December 563. The inscription is continued on the right side: The monastery of Clonard became famous for sanctity and learning. St. Finian was given the title of tutor of Irelands saints. The monastery was suppressed on the 14th January 1553 in the reign of Edward VI. Finian is patron of the diocese of Meath. On the rear side: This statue was erected for the faithful of this parish Aug. 1960 by V.Rev. Edward Crinion P.P. The left side gives a prayer: Oh God who didst give blessed Finian to be a minister of eternal salvation to thy people. Grant we beseech thee that we who had him on earth as a teacher of life may be worthy to have him for advocate in heaven, throhch Jesus Christ our Lord Amen.
