Description
English: A young officer recounts his experiences in the Mexican War of 1848 to a veteran of the American Revolution. The persons represented are members of the artist's family: the old man is his great-uncle Richard Caton; his mother and father appear as the middle-aged couple, his elder sister as the young lady, and his brothers as the officers. Discernible on the walls of the Baltimore parlor are a portrait of George Washington by Rembrandt Peale and an engraving of John Trumbull's Signing of the Declaration of Independence (ca. 1776).
