| Description |
English: The main church tower of Saint Catherine's Monastery at the base of Mount Sinai in Egypt. Immediately behind it is a Minaret, the tower of a muslim Mosque a curious feature for a Christian monastery. The mosque with minaret was built in the 11th century after the caliph al-Hakim threatened to destroy the monastery. However, the mosque has never been used, because it is not correctly oriented towards Mecca. Also, the minaret is not built as tall as the church tower.
Deutsch: Der Kirchturm des Katharinenklosters am Fuße des Berg Sinai in Ägypten. Direkt dahinter ist ein Minarett, der Turm einer muslimischen Moschee, ein außergewöhnliches Merkmal für ein christliches Kloster. Die Moschee samt Minarett wurde im Jahrhundert erbaut, nachdem der Kaliph al-Hakim gedroht hatte, das Kloster zu zerstören. Allerdings konnte die Moschee nie genutzt werden, weil sie nicht richtig gegen Mekka ausgerichtet ist. Darüber hinaus ist das Minarett kleiner als der Kirchturm. |
