Figure 1: Discipline Base Map. Areas of knowledge and expertise are shown as places with varying proximity to related areas. The intention is to wrap all of the areas indicated above onto one continuous sphere using different colors, symbols, images, sounds, and textures rather than words to indicate where you are. The structure of science on the left outlined in red was created by Kevin Boyack and Richard Klavans using a multi-step process to reveal a galaxy like layout for all of science. In general, the goal is to lay out and provide access to all digital collections by creating a bridge between mathematics and art to serve as a starting point and navigation tool into the digital world. This discipline base map will be combined with cartographic maps and maps of internet traffic/locations to document the work of the project.
