Project Goal: To make Wikipedia accessible to persons without internet connectivity.

Description of actual activities: This project started in early 2011, where volunteers went to schools in Kenya to install and train students and teachers how to use offline Wikipedia.

What lessons were learned that could help others succeed in similar projects?

  • Pre-visits are crucial to the success of this project.
  • Ensure that the content is locally-relevant to acheive high impact.
  • Most schools do not have official websites/online contacts -- so that means that we had to undertake F2F meetings, or do a followup by phone.
  • The Kiwix software needs to be simplified even further, so that anyone can be able to install it easily without facing any technical difficulties.
  • Getting volunteers to undertake the training & installation across schools is the easy part. The hard part is getting volunteers who will localize the content.
  • A post mortem of the feedback can be found here

What impact did the project have on WMF mission goals of Increased Reach, Increased Quality, Increased Credibility, Increased and Diversified Participation?

  • Increased reach to Kenyans without internet access ~30 schools.
