Project Summary[edit]
We will carry out a survey among the participants of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest in 2013. The study will have two parts: The focus of part one is to provide an international and longitudinal comparison of the characteristics of WLM participants and to compare the characteristic of WLM participants with Wikimedia/Wikipedia contributors in general. This includes the analysis of participants’ satisfaction and suggestions for improvement. The focus of part two is to provide chapters and WLM organizers with useful information about the WLM participants that helps them design more effective approaches for the acquisition and retention of new contributors.

Methods[edit]
Survey among the participants of the WLM photo contest. By default, all the participants will be invited to participate in the survey. If very large sample sizes are to be expected for certain countries, we can discuss with the organizers of the contest whether a smaller sample would be more appropriate. On the other hand, it might only be fair to ask all the participants for their feedback on the contest.
Dissemination[edit]
First and foremost, the findings will directly be communicated to the international Wiki Loves Monuments team. Publications will be provided on an open access basis. The question of the sharing of datasets will be discussed with the organizers of the contest and the data holders of previous surveys. Obviously, no personnalized data will be released.

Benefits for the Wikimedia community[edit]
- The study will provide further insights with regard to the particularities of the WLM contest, the characteristics of its participants and their view of the contest. It will also provide information on how these aspects develop over time. It will thus provide valuable input for the further develop-ment and transformation of the contest in the future.
- The study will help chapters to better exploit the opportunities provided by the WLM contest with regard to the acquisition and retention of new contributors.
- By providing international comparisons, the study will facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices across countries, as it sharpens people’s perception of international differences and helps them to take them into account in their exchanges.
